Saint Patrick's day today
Thanksgiving (4th Thursday of November) Thanksgiving is celebrated in the USA. Originally, settlers in 1621 thanked God that they had enough food for the winter.
Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day, usually as a gathering of family members and friends. Americans of all religions celebrate this holiday with big dinners and family reunions. It is a time to remember all the good things in life and to be thankful. Turkey is a traditional Thanksgiving Day Food.
Guy Fawkes Day (5th November) Guy Fawkes was part of a gang which planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605. He was caught before he could light the gunpowder.
Many people light bonfires and set off fireworks. As it is the end of autumn, it is the ideal opportunity to burn garden rubbish. Some light small bonfires in their own gardens, while other light larger ones in a communal space. In some towns and cities, the municipality organizes a bonfire and professional firework display in a park. These tend to be very popular.
Halloween (31st October) Halloween was originally believed to be the night when the spirits of the dead appeared.
Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (also known as "guising"), attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, watching horror films, as well as the religious observances of praying, fasting and attending vigils or church services.
May Day (1st May) May Day is celebrated in many countries on 1st May. People collect flowers and make wreaths. May Day celebrates the spring.
The first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the time of year when warmer weather begins and flowers and trees start to blossom. It is said to be a time of love and romance. It is when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs that are expressions of joy and hope after a long winter. One festivity for May Day is Maypole dancing. The Maypole though introduced by the ancient Britons became popular in the Middle Ages and many villages throughout the UK still have them. Long poles decorated with flowers, streamers and ribbons stand in the middle of the village green. Pairs of boys and girls alternately hold the end of a ribbon and weave in and around each other, in opposite directions, until the ribbons are woven together around the pole.
Valentine's Day (14th February) Valentine’s Day is the day when people in love exchange cards, flowers, chocolates and gifts.
Today Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, mostly in the West, although it remains a working day in all of them.
