People communicate with the help of words. it's a verbal communication. But for centuries there existed numerous gestures to convey the meaning of the words. ”Gestures are a form of nonverbal communication in which actions are used to send important messages either in place of speech or together”. Gestures include movement of the hands, face or other parts of the body. “Gestures are culture specific and can convey very different meanings in different social or cultural settings Hand gestures
Purpose of the work The objectives of my work are to figure out some hand gestures and to draw the attention to their peculiar meanings in different cultures.
Most popular gestures Ok sign Okay sign is made by connecting the thumb and forefinger in a circle and holding the other fingers straight . It means all right. But in Latin America it is considered obscene.
Crossing fingers Fingers crossed "for good luck" symbolize hope (first finger), and support for it (second). Since ancient times, this gesture was used to scare away evil spirits, as a symbol of the unity of faith and power.
Goat sign “Not show it in Italy, Spain and Macedonia. Among the superstitious people in Western countries sign "goat" means the same thing as we spit over the shoulder, that “Goat sign" love rock musicians and their fans. It is a sign when we extend the index and little finger upward. It has a negative meaning in Italy and in some Mediterranean countries. But usualy it is used in rock and roll and heavy metal music
Thumb down sign Thumbs up and thumbs down are common gestures of approval or disapproval. It is made by extending the thumb upward or down ward.
Fig sign Fig sign- is an ancient gesture with many uses . In some parts of the world the gesture is considered a good luck charm. But in Greece, Japan, Russia, Serbia and Turkey it is considered an obscene one.
The I love you sign I love you sign, it is an informal expression of love. People use the thumb,index finger and little finger and the middle and ring finger touch the palm. It is an informal expression of love.
Wave sign Wave is a gesture in which the hand is raised and moved left and right as a greeting or a sign of departure.
A clenched fist A clenched fist is used as a gesture of defiance or solidarity. It threatens physical violence. We can see this gesture in different meeting and demonstrations In Spanish it means “el pueblo unido jamas sera vensido””-”The people united will never be defeated.
Some gestures of the famous politicians V sign(W. Churchill) This sign is popular in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Winston Churchill popularized the V for victory sign during World War II. Gesture "Victoria", which shows the index and middle finger with the letter V, in many countries means victory or peace. However, if this palm facing to the person in the UK, Ireland and Australia V-shaped gesture becomes an insulting one.
“Clinton thumb” It took its name from the former US president Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton adopted this gesture from John F. Kennedy. This gesture is used by politicians to provide emphasis in speeches
Angela Merkel hands It is a strange gesture. Nobody knows what it means.
Sometimes gestures and signs speak louder than words. Gestures contain positive, negative and sometimes offensive meanings. The same gestures have different meaning in the parts of the world. So it is rather important to be careful while using gestures in communication with people from different cultural settings.
