    D. As symbols of respect and courage, knights turned out to be an intriguing mix of all the things that made males the best, as their education included the most effective sorts of exercises for the brain and the human body. Knight tournaments were a good way for the knights to try out the actual travails of fighting and never having to go through the pain and troubles of having to look after themselves, and of their kingdoms.

    E. Were there any women pirates in Renaissance England? They were in the minority, but they were never the less there and very able. Lady Mary was a daughter of a pirate and married to a pirate. When her husband died, she recruited her castle staff and went to sea herself. Her luck ran out when she captured a German captain, who was a friend of Queen Elizabeth. So Lady Mary quit piracy … and started selling stolen goods.

    F. Russia is an amazing holiday destination. It should be visited during the festival season, as it reveals the rich cultural tradition and fascinating customs of its people. While the festivals come from the Christian legacy Russia shares with Europe and America, the manner of celebration is unique. Enthusiastic travelers suggest planning a Russian holiday during the festival time and to be sure that the memories will last a lifetime!

    G. Normally very fine textiles are found in graves. Obviously, the quality of clothing worn in the Middle Ages would reduce with lower ranks, but even the slaves did not wear cloth as rough as people thought in the past and some still do today. Slaves would probably wear their master’s clothes, which may have been very thin in places and not decorated. They would usually receive the underclothes to be worn as overclothes.

The European Union is convinced C_____________________ compared with the professional and personal opportunities lost due to inadequate language skills. That is why many national governments encourage people to learn languages at all educational levels and at all ages during their working life.
Many local authorities provide immigrants with language training, familiarization courses on local society and culture, D_____________________. The latter elements are often provided in the immigrants’ own languages.
One example is from the Flemish city of Ghent in Belgium, E_____________________ including 1200 hours of Dutch, plus 75 hours of civic orientation courses. Hungary developed its national integration policy on the basis of a six-month pilot project called Matra F_____________________, 700 hours of cultural and legal orientation, and financial assistance with living expenses. The Finnish education system supports the maintenance and development of the mother tongues of immigrants to ensure what it calls functional bilingualism.

    Your amazing brain

You carry around a three-pound mass of wrinkly material in your head that controls every single thing you will ever do. From enabling you to think, learn, create, and feel emotions to controlling every blink, breath, and heartbeat – this fantastic control center is your brain. It is a structure so amazing that in the foreword to Discovering the Brain, famous scientist James Watson wrote, “The brain is the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe. It contains hundreds of billions of cells interlinked through trillions of connections. The brain confuses the mind.” Obviously to understand brain function, we need to confront its complexity.
Imagine your kitten is on the kitchen counter. She’s about to step onto a stove. You have only seconds to act. Accessing the signals coming from your eyes, your brain quickly calculates when, where, and at what speed you will need to dive to intercept her. Then it orders your muscles to do so. Your timing is perfect and she’s safe. No computer can come close to your brain’s awesome ability to download, process, and react to the flood of information coming from your eyes, ears, and other sensory organs.
Your brain contains about 100 billion microscopic cells called neurons – so many it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all. Whenever you dream, laugh, think, see, or move, it’s because tiny chemical and electrical signals are racing between these neurons along billions of tiny neuron highways. Believe it or not, the activity in your brain never stops. Countless messages zip around inside it every second like a supercharged pinball machine. Your neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the entire world. And while a single neuron generates only a tiny amount of electricity, all your neurons together can generate enough electricity to power a low-wattage bulb.
Neurons send information to your brain at more than 150 miles (241 kilometers) per hour. For example, a bee lands on your bare foot. Sensory neurons in your skin relay this information to your spinal cord and brain at a speed of more than 150 miles (241 kilometers) per hour. Your brain then uses motor neurons to transmit the message back through your spinal cord to your foot to shake the bee off quickly. Motor neurons can relay this information at more than 200 miles (322 kilometers) per hour.

Riding a bike seems impossible at first. But soon you master it. How? As you practice, your brain sends “bike riding” messages along certain pathways of neurons over and over, forming new connections. In fact, the structure of your brain changes every time you learn, as well as whenever you have a new thought or memory.
It is well known that any exercise that makes your heart beat faster, like running or playing basketball, is great for your body and can even help improve your mood. But large-scale efforts of scientists from a group of institutes from the National Institutes of Health have recently showed that for a period of time after you’ve exercised, your body produces a chemical that makes your brain more receptive for gaining new knowledge. So if you’re stuck on a homework problem, go out and play a game of soccer, then try the problem again. You just might discover that you’re able to solve it.

Speaker A: As for me, I’m 100 percent a bath person. I don’t even think that a shower helps you save water. In fact, if it takes you long to shower, you may spend even more water, as every minute spent in the shower wastes ten liters of water.  So, I don’t think that taking a bath is so much worse. Of course, I take showers too. But, I usually do it at school after PE lessons, or at the gym, or when I travel. When at home, I would certainly prefer a hot bath.

Speaker B: Well, I know you have to think green and live green and taking baths isn’t supposed to be environmentally friendly, but I can’t help it – I just love taking baths. It really helps me to de-stress. You see, I have dozens of bottles with bath foams, essential oils and salts and things like that. I also have candles in my bathroom, and I can switch on some instrumental music. All of these things combined help me to have a perfect rest from anything.

Speaker C: If you ask me, I think a bath is maybe good for some people, but certainly not for me.  A lot of my friends are constantly telling me how much taking a bath helps them to relax, but each and every time I try to take a bath, I feel literally bad. My pulse rate jumps up and I might have a high blood pressure. My doctor says it’s not a good idea for me to take baths, and I have to stick to showers. I don’t mind it really, as I have never found baths pleasant.

Speaker D: For me, taking a bath is a rare occasion. I prefer taking showers. I don’t know why, but each time I take a bath, it makes me want to sleep. With a shower, I can bring myself into any state. If it’s hot — I’ll relax, and if it’s cold — I’ll wake up. I like to take turns to switch hot and cold water. Doctors say it’s very useful, and I agree. I always look fresh and energetic and healthy, and I feel the same way. So, a shower is an important part of my healthy lifestyle.

Speaker E: I can’t say who I am – a shower person or a bath person. You see, there are advantages and disadvantages to both showers and baths. With baths, on the one hand, it’s much more relaxing for your body and mind. But, on the other hand, it’s such a waste of water. With showers, you save water, but at the same time, you don’t get the same pleasure as from a bath because it’s just a part of your daily routine. So, it depends on a particular situation.

Speaker F: My parents have recently had our bathroom repaired, and we have an amazing shower cabin now. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy it. You can listen to music inside while you’re taking a shower. The water can be pumped from several directions, and you can choose the mode according to your liking. It can even imitate a gentle tropical rain. With such technology, taking a shower is fun and healthy, and baths can’t ever beat it.

Katie: Why not? It sounds great. I haven’t been to a movie for ages, I guess. And…What’s on?
Mike: It’s “Men in Black 3” in 3D. All my friends are absolutely crazy about it.
Katie: I know. Everybody seems to have watched it, except me. I’d love to see it.
Mike: Good. It’s a date then. I’ll pick you around about 6:30, if you don’t mind? The film starts at 7:00.
Katie: Fine, I’ll be ready. Wait…I completely forgot!  I have a test tomorrow. I’m afraid I can’t go after all, Mike. I’m so sorry.
Mike: But you’ve got plenty of time to revise.
Katie: Yes, I know, but math has never been my strongest point. Besides, the test is rather difficult and I’ve missed a couple of lessons…so, it doesn’t seem very easy for me.
Mike: Do you want me to help you with your math? I can come in an hour or so and try to explain to you what we’ve covered while you were ill. I am not a math genius, but it looks like I don’t have any problems with it.
Katie: That would be nice indeed. But still, I’m not sure I’ll be free by 6:30. Dad asked me to walk the dog and take my little brother from kindergarten at 5. Sorry, Mike, maybe some other day.
Mike: No problem. What about Tuesday?
Katie: On Tuesday I agreed to meet with Ann. Susan is having a birthday party on Wednesday, and we decided to buy something nice for her.
Mike: Oh really? What do you want to get?
Katie: I was thinking about a book on yoga. She’s keen on sports, and lately she’s been taking a yoga class. She may be interested to learn more about meditation stuff, and different meditative states.
Mike: Not bad. So, you are going to the birthday party on Wednesday, aren’t you?
Katie: Exactly. But, we can watch a movie on Thursday. What do you think?
Mike: I don’t have any plans for Thursday, so far. The only thing I worry about is that the movie will be on then. I think today is our last chance.
    Katie: Anyway, today won’t do.
Mike: Look — I’ve got an idea. I can buy a DVD with any other movie you like and we can watch it on Thursday.
    Katie: Awesome. Let’s do it!

Interviewer: Good afternoon everyone and here we are in the studio talking to Alice Black, a young writer who has just published her first novel ‘Stars,’ and it has already become an international best seller. Hello Alice.
Alice: Good afternoon. It’s such a pleasure being here. Thank you for inviting me.
Interviewer: Before we start to discuss your novel, will you please tell the listeners a bit about yourself?
Alice: Of course. I grew up in Michigan and received my BA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan. In my freshman year, I won a Hopwood Award for my fiction. Then, my short fiction appeared in various publications. I live in Washington DC and I work for the National Geographic Society library.
Interviewer: Some of our listeners might not know much about your novel ‘Stars.’  Could you please tell us about it in brief?
Alice: Well, the novel is written as a series of e-mails from the narrator, a botany professor and mother of two named Jessica, who is married to the chief of a space tourism company. When the novel opens, a tragic accident has just happened. One of the company’s shuttles has just exploded shortly after liftoff, and everyone on board has been killed. So in her e-mails, Jessica narrates what follows the tragedy. The media frenzy that follows the accident’s aftermath, the impact on her marriage, the revelations about the company, the fact that she doesn’t know her husband Liam as well as she thought she did. The person she is e-mailing is a man named Arthur, her friend and colleague who is out of the country on sabbatical. But as the novel goes on, the reader slowly realizes that Jess and Arthur’s relationship has its own complicated history.
Interviewer: The format of your novel is quite unusual. Was it your original plan to write the novel in this way?
Alice: Definitely not. It was never part of my plan to write an epistolary novel. When I started writing the novel, it was just Jessica’s voice in my head, and she was confiding to someone. I hadn’t made a concrete decision about the form I was going to use. The idea to structure the story as a private e-mail communication came later, but it seemed to fit the intimate tone perfectly.
Interviewer: Once that decision has been made to use this style, was it a challenge to maintain it, or was it something you adapted to?
Alice: There were certainly challenges. The biggest one is that you have to leave your readers enough clues so that they can figure out what’s going on. To follow what the letter, or in this case e-mail, writers are referring to. But you also don’t want to have the narrator over explaining things. You need to maintain the allusion of eavesdropping on a conversation, which is one of the appeals of the epistolary form.
Interview: I’ve always been very interested in a writer’s daily routine. What’s a typical writing day for you?
Alice: I work a 9 to 5 job, and I try to squeeze some writing time after work a couple of nights during the week, but the solid majority of my writing takes place at the weekend. I typically get up in the morning, drink an unhealthy amount of coffee, and try to get to my desk before I get distracted by other things I have to do. I work until lunch, and if I’m feeling motivated, I’ll try to get another hour or two of writing in the afternoon.
Interviewer: Thank you Alice, it has been very interesting talking with you.
Alice: Thank you. I’ll be happy to come to your program once more, really.
