  London would not be London without the River Thames. It laps at the ancient walls of the Tower of London, flows past the Palace of Westminster and is spanned by Tower Bridge. Many people are aware that the river runs through Oxford and Windsor. However, there are a great many more interesting facts to learn about England‘s longest river.

  The river gives its name to the Thames Valley, a region of England centred around the river between Oxford and West London.

  Tate Britain is an art museum on Millbank in London. It is part of the Tate network of galleries in England, with Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. It is the oldest gallery in the network, having opened in 1897. It houses a substantial collection of the art of the United Kingdom since Tudor times, and in particular has large holdings of the works of J. M. W. Turner.   Named after the capital city of Northern Ireland HMS Belfast was launched on the 17th of March 1938 which appropriately was St Patrick’s day. Visitors can explore all of the ships nine decks.   Today the Thames has become a symbol of London. You can admire bridges built in many different architectural styles. Twenty-four bridges span the Thames in London, from Kew Bridge to Tower Bridge. Some our railway bridges and there is a footbridge, however most are road bridges.

  Tower Bridge
  This bridge was built in 1894. It regulates a large part of the impressive traffic of the Port of London. Due to a special mechanism, the main traffic-way consisting of two parts fixed to two hinges at the ends can be lifted up. In this way, the entrance and departure of extremely large vessels is possible, and it allows them to reach the Pool of London.
  Tower Bridge is 60 meters long with towers that rise to a height of 43 meters.

  London Bridge
  Throughout its history, London bridge has been a busy thoroughfare, and was once lined with shops. The road over the bridge was only about 4m wide between the shops. It was so narrow it often jammed with people, horses and carts. In 1733 a 'keep left' rule was enforced to keep the traffic moving. This became the rule of the road in Britain.
  The first London Bridge is thought to have been built by the Romans in the first century, with several rebuilds over the centuries. Eventually wooden bridges were replaced with a stone bridge, the first one being started in 1176 and finished years later.
  The present London bridge opened in 1973.

  Westminster Bridge is a road and foot traffic bridge over the River Thames in London, linking Westminster on the north side and Lambeth on the south side. The bridge is painted predominantly green, the same colour as the leather seats in the House of Commons which is on the side of the Palace of Westminster nearest to the bridge. This is in contrast to Lambeth Bridge which is red, the same colour as the seats in the House of Lords and is on the opposite side of the House of Parliament

  The Millennium bridge is a pedestrian bridge. Almost immediately after opening the bridge had to be shut because of dangerous swaying. It has now been reopened.
