The World Is a Fine Place and Worth Fighting For”

(Ernest Hemingway)

T. Good afternoon, dear friends. Today we are going to have a talk and discuss the problem of environment protection. I want you to think and speak about the place of a man in nature. Why did the writer say: “To protect the nature means to protect the Motherland”? How do people of different countries try to keep environment clean? Your task today is to use all the material you know on the theme “Protection of Environment”.

Students, look at the landscapes. The world we live in is really wonderful: blue oceans, seas and rivers, mountains, hills, fields and valleys. We live surrounded by this beauty. But the situation isn’t the same in different parts of our planet. At this picture you can see the Elba River. One of the most beautiful rivers in Europe is dying. That is the result of people’s action. There are a lot of places like that in the world. The nature faces a great threat. That’s why people who take care of our planet have established the 22nd of April as a special day around the world – the Earth Day. It’s the day for people to learn what they can do to protect the planet. So, today we are going to discuss one of the main problem of the time – the ecological problem. Tell me please, what does the word “ecology” mean?

S. The word “ecology” came from Greek word which means “home”. This idea of home includes the whole planet of ours.

I. Loveliness to be found. (I группа)

Работа со стихотворением “Leisure” W. H. Davies (1871-1940)

1. Listen to the poem, then read it.

2. Answer the question: What words does Davies use to describe Beauty?

Обучающиеся рассказывают о природе Тульского края.

T. The nature of our Motherland is very rich. What can you say about the landscapes of Tula region.

S1. Our land is very rich. Its territory is covered with beautiful forests and fields. The mild climate of Tula region is good for plants and flowers. Oak, lime, birch and ash are the commonest trees in Tula region. The famous Russian birch is especially attractive in summer. Fir and pine are always green and very beautiful.

S2. There are many wild flowers, flowering plants and grasses. Let us go to the garden or to the forest. How many flowers you will see there! Every month of spring and summer brings us some new flowers. In April we have violets and snow-drops. In May we have dandelions, lilies-of-the-valley and lilac. In June we have roses, lilies, daffodils, tulips and bluebells. Flowers can make people happy. They can dance and tell fairy tales. But only people, who understand the beauty of nature, who understand its language, who have a rich imagination can understand their language and their fairy tales, and see they dance.

T. Oh, how interesting it is! Thank you very much. Is the world of animals interesting?

S3. The world of animals is interesting and various, especially in our forest. There are many mammals such as wolves, wild bores, hares, roes, elks, in our forest. Many mammals are now protected by law.

S4. The bird life in Tula region is rich. Some 250 kinds of birds live in our region. The most numerous are rooks, sparrows and doves. In our forest we can hear wood-peckers. There are songbirds in the forest such as nightingales and skylarks. Partridges, heath-hens, hazel-hens and other birds are protected by law.

II. You are a part of the environment. (II группа)

Работа с текстом “Hello, people of the World!”

(Headway. Student’s book p. 9)

Read the text and answer the questions.

1. How are people and animals different?

2. What is the biggest difference between people and animals?

3. What can people choose to do?

Hello, people of the World!

There are five billion people in the world and they live in all different corners of it. They live on the snow and ice of the Poles and in the tropical jungles on the equator. They have climbed the highest mountains and walked on the sea bed. Some of them have even left the earth and visited the moon.

The human species is the most numerous and the most powerful of all the animals on earth. How did this happen? In many ways, animals can do things better than we can. Dogs can smell and hear better than we can. Cats can see in the dark. Birds can fly thousands of miles away and return to the same place every year. But we are different. No other animal builds cathedrals, plays football, tells jokes, gets married, has prisons, writes symphonies, elects presidents, or goes to the moon.

There is one thing above all that makes people and animals different. People love to talk – talk – talk. We are the great communicators! And we can communicate so many things in so many ways – with our faces, our hands, our bodies and our voices. Most important of all, we can record what we say and think in writing, so that we can communicate through time. We have a sense of past and future, not just present.

We are the only species that can change the world, and we are the only species that can change the world, and we are the only species that can choose either tp look after our world or to destroy it/

III. Where does pollution come from? (III группа)

T. What are people all over the world worried about?

S1. About two hundred years ago man lived in greater harmony with his environment because industry was not much developed. Today the situation is quite different. People all over the world are worried about what is happening to the environment, because of modern industry and the need of more and more energy. Newspapers and magazines write about water pollution, air pollution and land pollution.

T. Why is there so much discussion about pollution? Where does pollution come from?

Обучающиеся выступают с сообщениями

S2. Land pollution

This covers many things which can happen to the land in towns and the country, because of our activities. Rubbish tips, dumped poisonous chemicals, broken cars, thrown away bottles and dropped sweet papers are all types of land pollution. Some types of land pollution are just unpleasant to look at. Others can be dangerous to people and to animals. Farm animals injure themselves on old tins and bottles. Young children are sometimes hurt while playing in broken-down cars. Small animals crawl into bottles and die because they cannot get out. Poisoned soil can make animals and people very ill.

Land pollution is something that we all can help to prevent, by not leaving rubbish in the streets, or the country and also by telling other people not to do so.

S3. The forests are in danger. The world has over nine million sq. km. of forests. But they are disappearing fast not only because of fires. Every day we use paper and cardboard made from wood. We use different kinds of wood to make furniture and other things. Every year huge forests are cleared for different uses, and a lot of forests are so badly damaged that they will hardly be able to recover. If we go on like this, before long the forests on this planet may be destroyed.

S4. By the way, some medicines come from trees and from plants and flowers which grow in the forests. There are many illnesses which we still cannot cure. There are old ones like cancer and new ones like AIDS. It may be that the medicines we need will be discovered in wild plants in savannas, deserts or rainforests. If we destroy these places, we will never find the cure. Every one of us must know how important it is to care for our great forests and save them from harm.

S5. Besides, the huge forests help to control the world’s weather and to produce much of the oxygen in the air. People and animals breathe in oxygen, and breathe out carbon dioxide. We produce carbon dioxide when we burn things. Trees take this gas from the air, and produce oxygen. But in the last few years, people have cut down and burnt big areas of rainforest. This means there are fewer trees, and, of course, more dioxide.

S6. Air pollution.

As for me, I want to focus to another problem – the problem of air pollution. Nobody and noting on the Earth could live without air. People pollute the air all over the world. Waste from factories, electric power stations, the chemical industry and heavy industry are very dangerous. Much of this dangerous waste goes into the air and is carried by winds for great distances. The air around us can become polluted as a result of our activities. For instance, when coal is burnt gases and smoke are produced. These can make the air we breathe dirty and unpleasant. Sometimes the air becomes poisonous.

In 1952 many people died in London as a result of air pollution. This pollution came from coal fires in people’s homes and from power stations. It combined with the winter frog to form a poisons smog:

SMOKE + FOG = SMOG

There was still weather at the time which meant the smog could not escape. After this disaster a law was passed which made it illegal to burn coal in parts of cities called smokeless zones. This law was called Clean Air Act. The Clean Air Act has stopped much of the smoke pollution in cities.

S7. Water pollution.

I want to tell you about water pollution. The situation is really gloomy and sometimes even hopeless. Rivers, lakes, seas, oceans cover more than 70% of our planet. Scientists say “man will die if oceans die”. Over 5 million tons of oil products pollute the ocean each year. About 2 million tons of these products come from cars. First the oil products go into atmosphere. A ship wrecked tankers spill a lot of oil into the ocean. Many towns still pour their sewage strait into rivers with little treatment beforehand. This can kill the rivers’ life by removing all the oxygen from the water. Without oxygen none of the fish in the river can live.

Factories often cause water pollution by pouring poisonous wastes into streams and rivers.

Farming can also cause water pollution. The chemicals used by the farmer to protect crops against pests, weeds and disease sometimes get into rivers and kill fish. The fertilizers which the farmer uses to make crops grow sometimes cause pollution when the rain washes them into rivers. They make the water plants grow too quickly, so that they take all the oxygen out of the water, so that fish cannot live in it.

T. We know that the biggest rivers in Tula region are Oka and Don. But I wonder if you have a problem of water pollution.

S8. Of course, Tula is one of the biggest industrial cities. Waste from factories, the chemical industry and heavy industry are very dangerous. Factories and homes put waste materials which are poisonous into our rivers and lakes. People sitting beside the rivers throw their endless tins and papers into them. Nothing can live or grow in this polluted water.

We must keep in mind that not only the industry pollutes the nature. Every year each family create one ton of rubbish. A great number of dumps are all over the country. Just only some facts: it takes more than 2 years to decompose paper. Cans and tins destroy more than 90 years. Plastic packets decompose more than 200 years, glass – more than 1000 years.

S9. In addition radiation is very important problem. Awful harm is caused to our home by nuclear tests of atom bombs, accidents on the atomic stations, for example, Chernobyl tragedy in 1986. About 18% of the territory of Byelorussia was polluted with radioactive substances.

S10. Noise

Although noise is not a chemical and can not be seen like a broken-down car, it is a kind of pollution. Noise is all around us, where we live.

People living near the airport suffer from the noise of large and powerful jet airliners taking off and landing. Excessive noise can lead to serious psychic disorders.

People who are exposed to loud noises all the time become very nervous and upset. Moreover, they run a risk of going deaf.

I think that other people in our city are also exposed to loud noise, for example, noise from cars, buses or trains. Besides, when people listen to loud music they may disturb their neighbours. And the power of our music centers is growing all the time.

IV. Comment on the following statement. Some people think that cars should be banned from the centres of the big cities.

What is your opinion? Do you agree or disagree with this statement? (IV группа)

Use the following plan:

  • make an introduction (state the problem)

  • express your personal opinion and give reasons for it

  • give arguments for the other point of view and explain why you don’t agree with it

  • draw a conclusion

S1. There is no doubt that the invention of the car changed the world and nowadays we can hardly find a family without a car. Nevertheless, some people are against cars, especially in the centres of big cities.

In my opinion, cars should not be allowed into the city centres as they add to pollution and poison the air we breathe. We must also think about the people who live in the centre and suffer from the noise made by cars. Moreover, the streets in the centre are usually narrow therefore people are often stuck in traffic for many hours and, as the result, arrive late at their destination. Finally, with no cars in city centres, there would be no need for large ugly car parks, which would allow more space for parks.

S2. However, many people believe we would not be able to survive without cars because most of the products for shops and other businesses are transported by cars. Besides, they are afraid that public transport would be overloaded. I’m sure it is possible to solve these problems by introducing a reliable high frequency tram service as well as developing the underground. As for goods, we could use electric vehicles for their delivery.

To sum up, I believe that a clean, reliable and environmentally friendly public service would encourage people to use public transport and help smooth the transition to a car-free zone.

(III группа)

S11. People in cities suffer greatly from the pollution. But as for animals, the situation is really dramatic. Almost all animals, insects and birds living on our planet need help. They could disappear forever. During 300 years 280 species were destroyed on our planet. Nowadays the destruction of animals is going on. Indian tigers are among them.

Tigers are the biggest cats in the world. They are skilful hunters and people are afraid of them. So they kill them to save their lives. But some people hunt tigers for their beautiful skins and for fun. But some people hunt tigers for their beautiful skins and get a lot of money. The result is sad. There are few Indian tigers on the Earth.

S12. I want to tell you about elephants. They are wonderful, they can help men. Elephants need a lot of water. They drink as much as 50 gallons a day. They spray their bodies with water. They need a lot of food. Elephants spend about 16 hours a day eating. Today many elephants in Africa are dying because they do not have enough food to eat and space to live in. Hunters kill thousands of elephants every year for meat and for their tusks. Only two million elephants live on the planet today. As for the other animals the situation is the same:

1) 8 big cats are killed to make one fur coat;

2) only several hundred of rhinos are left in Asia;

3) about 3 millions kangaroos are hunted every year;

4) only 30 Californian condors were left in the world;

5) millions buffalos were destroyed by now;

6) over 40000 monkeys are caught every year;

7) about 300 dolphins and 30 sea turtles are poisoned by water pollution every day.

V. Comment of the following statement. Today many animals are at risk, so unless we do something to help, things will get only worse.

What is your opinion? (V группа)

Use the following plan:

  • make an introduction (state the problem)

  • express your personal opinion and give reasons for it

  • give arguments for the other point of view and explain why you don’t agree with it

draw a conclusion

S1. Every year more and more animals are becoming endangered species. Soon we may never see any rare animals, even in zoos. I personally think that the main reason for this is that animals’ habitats are either changed or lost.

For example, people change animals’ habitats by polluting water bodies – rivers and lakes – and soil. Fish and other animals that live in water or soil either die because of poisonous wastes, or develop mutations which change their bodies and the way they live. This also causes the decrease in the length of their life circle. Furthermore, bids and wild animals lose their habitats because people cut down forests and destroy reservation areas.

S2. We must save animal species from extinction before it is too late! One way is to join an environmental club or organization that work to protect rare animals and their habitats. Another way is to support a local zoo. A zoo sometimes can be a safe place for endangered animals than their natural habitat. Modern zoos take very good care of their animals and create the conditions very much similar to the animals’ natural environment.

S3. It seems to me that creating more natural parks may also be one of the solutions to the problem. Animals living in a protected environment have better chances of survival. Moreover, national parks may provide special programmes to breed endangered animals.

The problem of animal extinction is still vital and the sooner all people start thinking about saving endangered species, the better.

T. Well, the contradiction between man and nature are really very dramatic. But is there anybody who does something to make the life of animals better?

Знакомство обучающихся с «Красной книгой»

VI. Red Data Book (VI группа)

S1. Not only people can speak. Вооks can speak too. There is a kind of book which screams. It’s the Red Data Book. It’s a reference book on rare and disappearing animals and plants. Why is it “Red”? The colour red is a danger signal understandable to all people in the world.

The red light means no passage. Stop! You have to think why many plants and animals disappear every day. You are to understand why human intelligence causes death of wild life. That means man is in danger too.

In 1949 scientists examined the living conditions of animals, birds and insects. They made the list of rare and disappearing living things and named it Red Data Book. The first volumes of Red Data Book were published in 1966. In our country the book appeared in 1974.

This is unusual book. It’s pages are of different colours. Animals which need immediate help are placed on the red pages. Those which number is reducing are on the yellow pages. Green pages are for animals which are already saved.

The colour red is one of blood and life. You should hear the world around you. It calls for help.

VII. What can be done?

S1. The problem of the environment is widely covered by TV, radio and the press. There are people who are trying to do something about it. They do their best to protect our forests. Specialists take care of the trees and fight harmful insects. They plant young trees when old ones die or are cut down. Each of us can help to protect the forests. We know that it is not right to pick wild flowers. We know when we go hiking and make a fire we must put it out and cover it with earth before we go away.

S2. I agree with you. Nowadays people understand how important it is to solve environment problems. One of them is pollution in its many forms: water pollution, air pollution, land pollution and nuclear pollution. We have many factories. Some of them are old and have no filtering system. Our task is to protect nature. We must reconstruct old factories in order to use modern filtering technique. We can take measures to decrease the level of harmful substances in the air. For example, car owners should install special filters on their cars, besides the government should move all plants and factories outside the city. And of course we should plant more parks because trees produce oxygen and clean the air so the problem of air pollution is nor so urgent.

S3. Don’t you think that our city is slowly turning into a big landfill site? There is loads of litter everywhere. People throw it on the ground instead of putting it into a little bin.

The reason is that there aren’t enough litter bins in public places. If there were more litter bins, our city would be much cleaner.

Of course we’ve all got to try and reduce the amount of rubbish we throw away by buying unpackaged goods, like fruit and vegetables, rather than goods which are wrapped and packaged in plastic.

Besides, we shouldn’t dump our rubbish without thinking which things, such as bottles and paper, can be recycled.

S4. I think that industrial pollution has made the water in our river completely undrinkable and thousand of fish die every year as a result of the illegal dumping of waste into our river by factories and plants. If this trend continues, one day we won’t have any fish at all.

I think we can improve the quality of water in our river by installing different purifying systems.

Another problem is that people consume too much water so in the future we won’t have enough fresh water for everybody.

But I don’t think that the situation is so critical because we have lots of water underground.

It’s possible to recycle rain water and use it to water plants or for washing.

S5. Every day a huge number of plants and factories emit lots of harmful substances into the atmosphere of our city so the concentration of harmful substances in the air is over ten times the admissible level.

A great increase in the use of private cars has caused an increase in a new kind of air pollution. The most dangerous pollutant from cars is lead.

To my mind, we can take measures to decrease the level of harmful substances in the air. For example, car owners should install special filters on their cars, besides the government should move all plants and factories outside the city.

And of course we should plant more parks because trees produce oxygen and clean the air so the problem of air pollution is nor urgent.

S6. To my mind,we can install different air filters and water treatment facilities or recycle rubbish but we don’t know how to fight against the growing noise around us. On the other hand, I think we can try to reduce the level of noise near the airport by installing special screens.

T. Lets pass to the problems closer to us-problems devoted to the ecology of Tula region. Our region is situated not far from Moscow. This region is famous for its beautiful nature. I’m sure that our government must solve the ecological problems more effectively. Now I’d like to draw your attention to another problem. Our town lies in a beautiful place. It is surrounded by beautiful forests. There are a lot of lakes and small rivers around the town. People like to spend their free time having picnics, fishing, gathering mushrooms and berries. Unfortunately, they leave a lot of different litter in their campsites.

Students, look at this photos and say what can you see on them?

(Демонстрируются фотографии окрестностей города)

S1, S2, S3… 1) Litter is left.

2) Bottles, cans and tins are left everywhere.

3) Papers and plastic packets are thrown out.

4) Trees are cut and painted.

5) The baby-trees are cut.

6) Fires are burnt.

7) Birds are frightened.

8) Dogs are not under control.

9) The water is polluted.

T. And what about you? Do you behave yourselves in the countryside the same way? What do you do to save the nature?

S1, S2, S3… 1) We always leave the place clean when we hike.

2) We always take litter home after picnic.

3) We reuse plastic containers.

4) We never break trees when we go to the forest.

5) We never throw rubbish into the lake.

6) I never catch birds and animals.

7) I never cut wild flowers.

8) We save energy and water at home.

9) I never paint the trees.

10) Some measures have been taken in our college to protect nature. The students of our college do everything possible to protect nature, to keep the environment clean. We take care of 12 Springs. They are very beautiful. It is a pretty place to sit beside on a hot summer day. There is a beautiful park in front of our college. We plant young trees and flowers every spring. Our park is clean/ We don’t break trees. We don’t throw paper in the park.

VIII. Code of Ecological Rules. (VIII группа)

T. Now, students, lets make the Code of Ecological Rules for all people of our town.

На фоне тихо звучащей классической музыки обучающиеся читают отрывки из поэмы Г. У. ЛогфеллоHiawathas Childhood

S1.

By the shore of Gitchie Gumee,

By the shining Big-Sea-Water,

Stood the wigwam of Nokomis,

Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis.

Dark behind it rose the forest,

Rose the black and gloomy the pine-trees,

Rose the firs with cones upon them;

Bright before it beat the water,

Beat the clear and sunny water,

Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water.

S2.

At the door of summer evenings

Sat the little Hiawatha;

Heard of whispering of the pine-trees,

Heard the lapping of the waters,

Sounds of music, words of wonder.

T. Our discussion is over. In conclusion, I’d like to tell you that the protection of nature is everybody’s business. I’m sure that you are real friends of our fragile planet. The air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, the water we drink are all part of the environment. It’s very important that you should be aware of the most serious environmental problems. If we want our lives to be healthy and interesting, a lot of other creatures and plants need growing space too.
