The first mention of correspondence education dates
back to 1728: American professor Caleb Phillips
organized a distance course in verbatim writing.

The founders of the first distance schools of the foreign languages were French Charles Toussaint and German Gustav Langenscheidt.
Their method was based more on students'
learning of spoken foreign language, not correct grammar.

A real correspondence school was first opened in the United States in 1873. It was called «The Society to Encourage Studies at Home» and was intended for female students. It was one of the first attempts to provide women across the country with a full tertiary education.
The Society was founded by Harvard University professor Anna Eliot Ticknor.

The form of distance learning in modern terms dates back to 1858 at the University of London. Students could obtain not only additional knowledge but also a Higher Education Diploma and a Degree.

In 1969, the Open University was established in London. It was part of political project captured by future Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
They were recording lectures with professors who could be watched live.
The lectures lasted 30 minutes and were repeated twice a week,
so that each student had the opportunity to spend an hour watching/listening to the lecture and several hours of self-study.

The first online programs for students were launched in 1989 by the Commercial University of Phoenix in Arizona.
In 1987 in Colorado, entirely digital International University was established and it was the first accredited online university in history.
