Introduction
Youth
and youth movement over decades have become important factors in the life of
both countries. Numerous youth organizations have been formed since World War
I, uniting people from all classes and sections of the population. Youth
movement is nit free of some problems, which result from a number of factors,
depending on grounds, on which the organization was formed. Young
people are active participants in their own history. Past generations of
radical students have played a part in protests and revolutions against the
existing order and society. A youth movement in this sense has an ideological
or political character. At the same time ordinary young people usually belong
to a youth movement through membership of an adult-led, voluntary youth
organization. There are also fashion-led “youth cultures”, identified by types
of dress, music and language. The term “youth movement” is so wide that it can
refer to Punk Rockers as well as the Young Conservatives. The
aim of our project work is to study the issue of youth movement and youth
organizations, their role in the society of the UK and Russia. Our
primary goals are to identify the most common British and Russian youth
organizations, to study the experience of our school in implementing Timur
movement, to present the experience of our school as part of the volunteer
work. In our project work we used such
sources as periodical press, linguistic and cultural guides, the Internet
sources, interview.
Youth
movements in the UK and in Russia
There
are many national organizations in the UK that have been established to provide
services to people under the age of 18. Nowadays there are more than 60 youth
organizations in Great Britain. All of them can be divided into three large
groups: non-political organizations, youth organizations associated with
political parties, youth organizations controlled by religious bodies. The two
largest non-political youth organizations are the associations of Boy Scouts
and the Girl Guides. It is a voluntary, non-formal educational charity
movement for young people. We can also observe Navigators UK. It’s more
community and family focused version of Scouting. The Woodcraft Folk:
the aim is to educate and empower young people to be able to participate
actively in society, improving their lives and others. Boys’ Brigade has
to combine drill and fun activities with Christian values. Camping Club
Youth offers young people to take part in camping and outdoors activities. There
are also different political movements such as Conservative Future, Liberal
Youth, Young Labour, etc. Russia
has a number of organizations and structures in place to provide a stepping
stone for young people to their adult life. Youth organizations are more
numerous in modern Russia than in Soviet times, but more insular, so as result
are less attended by children. Certain groups can be joined by foreign
nationals, while others are usually only suitable for Russian citizens.
Nowadays all children’s organizations can be divided into eight big groups.
Pioneer movement carries forward the fine tradition of pioneering, the
collective creative activity. Scouting began the revival of the Scout
movement in Russia. There are three parallel All-Russian Scout organizations.
They vary in shape, ideology, methods of work and structure of the
organization. Historical and cultural tourist-regional association
have the activities that are aimed at reviving the traditions and customs of
the national culture, the study of the history of the country. Military-patriotic
movement is focused on the study and revival of martial and heroic
traditions of the country, training of young people for military service, civic
and patriotic education. Environmental associations are involved in
environmental activities and environmental education. Social Rehabilitation
and volunteer organizations are focused on a wide range of service to
society movements that are engaged in volunteering, charity work, and
assistance to the disabled, veterans and orphans. It also includes Timur work. Associations
of training are aimed at building a professional career. Children
associations are aimed at the spiritual and moral upbringing of the younger
generation.
Timur
work in our school
The
groups of youth organizations of the UK and Russia have a lot in common. They
have the same aims. Volunteer work occupies a large place in the life of modern
youth. The world’s first voluntary youth organization was the Church-based
Boys’ Brigade, founded in Glasgow, Scotland , in 1883 by William Alexander
Smith and dedicated to religious education and developing the habits of
obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect, and all that tends towards a
true Christian manliness. In
Russia in all times people would help each other. By the time of the 1917
Revolution many traditions of such help had developed within every estate and
in society as a whole. New time brought new forms of voluntary work. We mean
Timur work. The idea of the movement was borrowed from the popular novel “Timur
and his Team” by A. Gaidar. The main characters did good deeds: helped the
families of the Red Army soldiers and combated the local gangs. That movement
became very popular among young people. During the Great Patriotic War teams of
Timur movement helped the families of Soviet soldiers, did large amount of
unskilled work: cleaning railways from snow, preparing firewood, loading and
unloading cargo, etc. Their activities were widely reported in newspapers and
radio. After
World War II Timur work was included in Pioneer movement and became compulsory
for all Pioneer organizations. There was also no exception for our school. At
the end of 1970s and in the 1980s Timur work in our school was under the
guidance of Elena Konstantinovna Istratii. Nowadays she is a headmaster of our
school. We decided to ask her a few questions about her work.
-
Elena Konstantinovna, we’re working on the project
devoted to youth organizations. We know that our school took part in Timur
work. Would you be so kind to answer some of our questions?
-
Of
course, with great pleasure.
-
When did our school take part in Timur work?
-
Timur
work was a part of Pioneering movement. Our school had been taking part in that
activity since its foundation. As for me, I started to work as a pioneer
leader. That’s why taking part in that work was my duty. Timur movement ceased
to exist at the very beginning of 1990s.
-
What did you and young pioneers do?
-
The
students of our school visited the families of the Soviet Army soldiers, the
veterans of the Great Patriotic War, orphan homes; helped to gather harvest,
planted trees and so on. They also made the territory of our school and
district clean. Sometimes we helped to gather the harvest.
-
What did the students like to do most of all?
-
Their
favourite activity was visiting orphanages. They prepared presents for children
and played theatrical performances.
-
Are there any photos from those times?
-
Yes,
there are few. Photos were rather rare. Some of them are in our school museum.
-
Nowadays students of our school do volunteer work.
What do you want to wish them?
-
First
of all I want to thank them, thank their families for their work. They are
doing the right thing. We have done a lot and we want to do more. I wish us to
continue helping those who need our help.

Voluntary
work in our school
Timur
movement ceased to exist with the collapse of the USSR and liquidation of
Pioneering. In modern Russia Timur movement is preserved in some regions. Our
school partly continues the tradition of Timur movement. Teachers and students
of our school take part in voluntary work. For
many years our school has been doing good deeds. We collected humanitarian assistance
to refugees and people affected by the terrorist attacks. We collected gifts
for the baby houses. We visited orphanages and gave gifts to children on New
Year’s Day. It has become a tradition to collect food and toys for animal
shelters. We want to continue to do volunteer work. We have everything to do
it: our loving hearts, our open souls and our great wish to bring kindness.

Conclusion
With
busy lives it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of
volunteering are enormous to us, our families and our community. Volunteering
allows us to connect our school community and make it a better place. Even
helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of
people, animals, and organizations in need. Dedicating our time as a volunteer
helps us to make new friends, expand our network, and boost our social skills. Volunteering
is a great way to meet new people; it strengthens our ties to the community and
broadens our support networks, exposing us to people with common interests.
Volunteering gives us the opportunity to practice and develop our social
skills. Volunteering increases our self-confidence, it can provide a healthy
boost tour self-esteem and life satisfaction. Our role as volunteers can also
give us a sense of pride and identity. Volunteering provides a sense of
purpose, combats depression, helps us stay physically healthy. As
Oscar Wilde said: ‘The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest
intention”
