In 30th years of XX century in the village Grinevo Ivan Vasilevich Druzhinin (1887-1949) - one of the most talented masters - lived. He made nice and funny toys. I.V.Druzhinin's toys are known as "classical" kargopolskie ones now.
His work based on local traditions. Peasant women, cows, horses, dears, rams, hares, bears and ducks were the most typical characters of the toys.
In 2003 in Kargopol the House museum of a family of Shevelev and a clay toy was opened. In the museum you can make the traditional Russian toy with your hands.
Clay toy – making was a time – consuming process and required great skill and artistic imagination. After modeling, clay figures were dried for two days and then baked in an oven.
Then they were either coated with lead glaze or painted in natural paints. The toys were usually decorated with direct and crossed lines, circles, crosses, branches of different plants.
On the toys` decoration you can see ancient symbols of the sun - the big red circles, crosses, rings, and also motives of grains, grain ears and branches of plants are characteristic.
The glory of toys has dispersed far away from Kargopol. Everybody who leaves Kargopol takes away a clay toy as a memory of Russian North.
