(Students give their answers)
What language do we speak in Russia?
And where do the people speak
English?
So now we can figure out the
topic of this lesson: the English-speaking countries and Great
Britain in particular.
By the end of this lesson you
will be able to
1) Name
the English-speaking countries and show them on the map
2) Pronounce
the official name of GB correctly
3) Name
the capital of GB, show where it is
4) Name
the four big parts of GB and show them
5) Speak
about the Union Jack and name the Saint patrons, whose crosses it wears.

which country it belongs.
Students repeat the names and
memorize them.
- Reading the official name of GB.
Students look at the British map
and read aloud first after teacher, then one-by-one.
“The United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland”.
They put this name down on the
maps.
- Receiving the information on the country.
Students watch a video “An
Introduction to Britain”.
- After-video activities: discussion.
T.: Now we need to find out how
well you understood the information? And what new things you have learned.
Who is the head of the country?
How many people live there?
What is the capital city?
What are the other big cities?
What parts does Britain
consist of?
- Working with the students’ maps.
Students mark the parts of Great Britain on the maps by colouring them in different colours.
Teacher checks how well they
pronounce the names of the parts.
T.: As you know Britain
established as a country very long ago, its national symbols base on the
Christian signs and traditions. Each part of the country has got its Saint
patron, as for instance St. Patrick the patron of Ireland (teacher shows the
slides and names the patrons of England – St. George and Scotland
– St. Andrew)
7. Colouring the students’
flags.
Teacher exposes the pictures of
flags with the Saints’ crosses on them – St. George’s, St. Andrew’s, St.
Patrick’s and asks the students to colour their flags to match them with the
Union Jack.
- Conclusions.
The class returns to the plan of
the lesson, written on the board and recalls the main facts they have learned.
