My native town
My
native town is Grodno. It’s an ancient town. Not long ago it celebrated its 850th
anniversary.
The town of Grodno is situated on the river Neman. The river
divides it into 2 parts. The older part of the town lies on the right bank of
the Neman. Here you can see the old castle where kings once lived. Now it is a
historic-archeological museum. On the banks of the Neman one can also see
modern apartment houses, offices and different architectural monuments. Among
them there is a 17th century Roman Catholic church.
Grodno is a fast-growing town. It’s a regional centre with the
population of over 250,000 people. There are some big plants here and some
smaller factories. There are several residential areas in our town. Every
district has schools, kindergartens, shops, everyday services. The people of
Grodno are very fond of their Zoo. Here you can see animals from all
geographical regions of the world.
Grodno is a big cultural centre. There are 3 institutions of

London
London is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland. It is its political, economic and cultural centre with the population
of about 11 million people.
London is situated on both banks of the river Thames. There are about 20
bridges across the Thames. London is a very old city. It is over twenty
centuries old.
The capital of the UK is traditionally divided into several parts: the City,
Westminster, the West End and the East End.
The City is the oldest part of London. Nowadays it is financial and
business centre. There are a lot of banks, offices and companies there. Very
few people live in the City of London. People come there to work.
The famous St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London are in the
City. St Paul’s Cathedral was built in the 17th century by Sir
Christopher Wren, a well-known English architect, after the Great London Fire.
The Tower of London was once a fortress, a palace and a prison. It was built in
the 11th century. Now it is a museum.
The West End is the aristocratic part of London. There are a lot of
places of interest. The centre of this part of London is Trafalgar Square.
It was named in memory of admiral Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar
in 1805. The Nelson’s Column is in the centre of the square.
Nowadays the political centre of London is Westminster. Here you can
find the famous Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British
Royal family. It was built in the 18th century. The Westminster
Palace, or the Houses of Parliament, is also situated there. One of the
towers of the Houses of Parliament is famous for its huge clock called Big
Ben. In the center of this part of the city you can also see Westminster
Abbey. It is the place of coronation of nearly all kings and queens. Many
great Englishmen were buried there – Newton, Darwin, Dickens, and other
outstanding people. Kings and queens were also buried there.
The East End is the industrial district of London. There are plants,
factories, workshops and docks there.
6. Работа
Washington D.C.
Washington D.C., the
capital of the United States of America, is situated on the Potomac River.
Washington does not belong to a state. It is a city and district – the District
of Columbia (D.C.). The District is a piece of land 10 miles square. The city is
named in honour of the nation’s first president, George Washington. The
district is named in honour of Columbus, the discoverer of America. After the
War of Independence the USA needed a capital city.
Pierre L’Enfant, a French
designer and engineer, designed the city. He planned straight streets with
trees on both sides, beautiful buildings, and monuments to honour great men. By
1800 the president’s house was almost finished. The buildings for the Congress
of the USA and some other buildings were built on the hill. These buildings
were called the Capitol. Then the hill was renamed Capitol Hill. In 1800
President John Adams, the second president, and other members of the Government
moved to the new city of Washington D.C. The city became the Federal capital.
The city is divided into four sections: northeast (NE), northwest (NW),
Southeast (SE), southwest (SW).
Washington is the world’s largest one-industry city. And that industry is
government. Political buildings and monuments completely dominate the city
center. The White House, where the US president lives and works in the Oval
Office, the Capitol, the home of the US Congress, and the Supreme Court, are
all in Washington.
At the end of Constitution Avenue rises the huge dome of the Capitol – a big
white dome standing on a circle of pillars. The members of the Congress meet
here to discuss the nation’s affairs. Not far from the Capitol is the Library
of Congress, the largest library in the States. It contains more than 13
million books, more than 19 million manuscripts, including the personal papers
of the US presidents. At the other end of the Constitution Avenue there’s the
Lincoln Memorial – huge statue dedicated to the memory of Abraham Lincoln.
There are various monuments among them the Washington Monument and the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial, surrounded by parkland and lakes.
It also has 33 parks. The most beautiful park in metropolitan Washington apart
from Rock Greek, is Great Falls Park. This park is split in two by the
waterfalls from the Virginia side.
In 1922 the famous cherry trees were planted in Washington. the 3000 flowering
cherry trees were a gift from Japan and still a major attraction for visitors
and residents in the early days of spring.
Some of the finest museums in America include the National Gallery of Art, the
National Air and Space museum and the Smithsonian Institution. In the museums
we can see all kind of things: famous paintings and sculptures, the dresses of
Presidents’ wives. The original of the Declaration of Independence, the largest
blue diamond in the world. There are 5 universities in Washington.
Washington is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the US. The
metropolitan area now has a population of nearly 3 million people. In the inner
urban area of Washington D.C. the majority of population is black or
Afro-Americans as they are now called, and they are used in the services.
There are no skyscrapers in the capital, because they would hide the city’s
many monuments from view. No building in the city may be more than 40 metres
tall.
1.
Past Simple Tense –
Yesterday – вчера
Last … - в
…
ago – тому
назад.
Once upon a time – когда
3)
П + V2(ed) + ВЧП
4)
+ did + not + V1 + ВЧП
КОФ didn`t
5)
Did + П + V1 + ВЧП?
6)
8)
Who + V2(ed) + ВЧП.
2.
Past Continuous Tense –
At the moment – в тот
момент.
союзом when(когда)
или while(пока).
3)
4) П + was/were + Ving + ВЧП
5)
Was/were + П + Ving + ВЧП
6)

Past Simple.
В
3)
П + had + V3 + ВЧП
4)
П + had + not + V3 + ВЧП
5)
Had + П + V3 + ВЧП
6)
УТП , Hadn`t + П (местоимение)
7)
СВС + had + П + V3 + ВЧП
8)
4. Past Perfect
Continuous Tense –
с предлогами for, since.
3)
+ had + been + Ving + ВЧП My father had been learning at school
for nine years.
Past Perfect.
