TEXT
Americans still remember the wife of
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She took an active role in the American
public life. Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York in 1884. She had a lonely
childhood. Though her family was well-known in America, her uncle Theodore
Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States, she
personally felt very unhappy. Once Eleanor said that she was the “ugly
duckling” (гадкий утенок) in a family of beautiful people. Her mother called
her “granny” because she was very serious and never smiled. She loved her
parents very much but her father made her life miserable (сделал ее
жизнь несчастной). He had a drinking problem and spent much time in
hospital.
When Eleanor was 15 she went to
England to study in an English school. After her return to New York she was a
teacher for a short time. At that time Eleanor began the social activities that
would make (сделали) her so famous. Her husband, F. D. Roosevelt, became
president in 1932. By that time Eleanor had become known in the USA for her
social work. She didn’t stop her activities and continued them after the death
of her husband in 1945. Her years alone were active and productive (продуктивные) years. Not only in the United States, but in countries around the
world, she was a symbol for hope and help.
