Задание 1
Listen to the conversation and say how Ben has
changed.
Della: Thanks for the meal, Mrs. Brown.
Ben: Yes, thanks, Mum. Sorry, but we’ve got to go
now. We’re meeting some friends.
Mother: Oh, just a moment. I’d like to show Della
something. I’ve been going through some of our family snapshots and I’ve … er …
found these lovely photos of Ben.
Ben: Oh, no, mum. Please don’t embarrass me!
Mother: I thought Della would like to see them. I’m
sure she’d like to see some photos of you when you were younger.
Ben: I don’t believe this!
Della: I’d love to see a picture of Ben when he was
little. Please show me, Mrs. Brown. Ben doesn’t mind.
Ben: This is not happening!
Mother: Here’s one. This is my favourite. It was taken
when we were on holiday in Majorca about ten years ago. Here, have a look!
Della: How funny! You used to be quite
fat, Ben! And your hair’s quite different too.
Mother: Ben used to have such lovely, curly hair. Look
at it now!
Ben: I’m glad it’s straight.
Mother: Once his hair was blond, quite blond, it was
almost white.
Della: How cute! I bet he looked like a little angel!
Mother: Yes, he did.
Ben: Come on, Della. Let’s go and meet the others.
I can’t stand this any more.
Mother: You used to be such a sweet little boy.
Задание 2
Complete
the conversation between Tara and her great-grandmother, Rose, with the correct
form of used to.
Rose: I’m ninety-eight years old and I can tell you
things have changed a lot in my lifetime. Families used to be much
bigger and children 1……… be much more polite.
Tara: 2………… women ………… do all the boring
jobs?
Rose: Well, my mother 3……………… stay at
home and do all the housework. And all the girls, my four sisters and I 4………………
help her. The boys did nothing. You see, most young women 5……………………
go to university in those days. They 6………………… get married instead.
Tara: Could you choose your husband?
Rose: Oh yes! But women 7………………… have much
freedom. Until 1918 women 8…………… be able to vote in elections! And
until 1928 they had to be thirty to vote.
Tara: Did your mother ever have a job?
Rose: She never earned any money but she 9…………
work very hard. She looked after her parents, her husband and her ten children.
Tara: When did she die?
Rose: In 1918. She was only fifty-two.
Tara: How sad!
Rose: Yes, it was very sad. I was only eighteen. In
those days, people 10……………… live so long. Perhaps it was because
they 11………… have so many children.

I
agree.
I
quite agree with you.
I
agree with you entirely.
I

I

That’s

That’s
true!
Exactly!
Quite
so!
Absolutely!

I
don’t agree at all.
I’m
sorry,
I
think you are absolutely wrong.
You
can’t be serious.
Nonsense!
On
the contrary!
Certainly
not! (Definitely not!)
Well,
I wouldn’t say that.
I’m
not sure about that.
I
can’t accept that…
Do
you really think so?
