Pupils read the sentences and define the crime.

Answers: 1) kidnapping; 2) murder; 3) burglary; 4) blackmail; 5) hijacking

III Language work and writing

This activity is aimed at developing fluency. Ss will be able to look at the situation from the perspectives of the different people involved and start thinking about possible reactions to the same situation.
Allow Ss 5 minutes to decide what punishment people deserve in different situations. Ss make notes in groups. Walk around the class and help students with notes if necessary. After a discussion in groups, Ss report their ideas to the class.

IV Speaking

Teacher: You’ve been judges for a while and you understood how difficult it was to choose the punishment people deserved. Nowadays the question is whether the society should punish criminals severely or treat them in another way, using the alternative methods.

Students are divided into 2 groups. They are given a topic for discussion “Should we be cruel or be kind” (at the previous lesson Ss read the article by J. Wallis “Letters to the editor. The Post. P 121 New Millennium English 11)
Let the Ss explain their point of view whether the society should punish criminals severely or treat them in another way, paying attention to a way of dealing with juvenile crime.
The first group stands for harsh treatment, another group is against it.
Allow Ss 5 minutes to discuss the case and try to come to a common decision in groups on the questions (for harsh treatment or for soft measures)
Ss work in their groups, brainstorming, developing and collecting arguments. Tell them to make notes at this stage, as they are going to present their point of view and to give all the arguments they have produced in groups during the discussion.
During the discussion move around the class and monitor the process and evaluate the performance of individual Ss.

Choose a person from each group who will state the group’s opinion and present the arguments on behalf of the whole group.
Allow Ss 2 minutes to concentrate on the results of their presentation.
V Writing

Teacher: Now we are going to put your ideas in a written form. To present our personal opinion on a particular topic we should write an opinion essay. Let’s revise the rules of writing an essay.

An opinion essay should contain:

  • a) an introduction, in which we introduce the subject and state our opinion clearly.
  • b) a main body, consisting of two or more paragraphs (each presenting a separate viewpoint supported by reasons/examples) and including a paragraph giving the opposing viewpoint.
  • c) a conclusion in which we state our opinion using different words.

Opinion essays also have a title and are normally written in a formal style. They can be found in the form of newspaper/magazine articles, school assignments etc.

Teacher: Now you will be given an essay on the topic Should we be cruel or be kind? But it is cut into pieces. Your task is to put them into a logical order and match the paragraphs with the parts of an opinion essay.

There is a lot of violence in the modern world. Although prisons keep us safe from dangerous criminals, they do not completely solve the problem of crime. In my opinion, people should find more effective punishments for criminals than prison.

The way I see it, imprisonment works adversely against crime. First of all, prisoners face horrible conditions such as inadequate medical care or abuse by guards, which, coupled with an environment of criminal peers, often make prisoners more violent than when they went in. In addition, some criminals learn in prison how to commit worse crimes. What is more, they are released with only a few roubles in their pockets and a perspective of being unemployed. As a result, most ex-prisoners commit a crime again.

To my mind, kind treatment, such as sending abroad with a social worker, on the contrary involves the positive side of human nature. Young criminals have someone to talk to about their attitudes, values and behaviour. It goes without saying that imprisonment does not help criminals to realize what positive values in life are. All in all criminals who passed through soft measures of punishment are less likely to re-offend.

Yet some people consider prisons to be the most effective punishment for criminals. They also believe that prisons protect people from those who might harm us. Although murderers and other violent criminals deserve being sent to prison, a vast majority of prisoners are locked up for non-violent crimes such as low level property crimes. In this case they only need help finding jobs. Moreover, some people who commit crimes are mentally ill and doctors can help them much more than prisons.

In conclusion, I believe that prisons are necessary for criminals who are a real danger to society. It may be better if less dangerous criminals receive different punishments. Rehabilitation programmes cost far less and are more effective than prisons.

An introduction

There is a lot of violence in the modern world. Although prisons keep us safe from dangerous criminals, they do not completely solve the problem of crime. In my opinion, people should find more effective punishments for criminals than prison.

A main body

The way I see it, imprisonment works adversely against crime. First of all, prisoners face horrible conditions such as inadequate medical care or abuse by guards, which, coupled with an environment of criminal peers, often make prisoners more violent than when they went in. In addition, some criminals learn in prison how to commit worse crimes. What is more, they are released with only a few roubles in their pockets and a perspective of being unemployed. As a result, most ex-prisoners commit a crime again.

To my mind, kind treatment, such as sending abroad with a social worker, on the contrary involves the positive side of human nature. Young criminals have someone to talk to about their attitudes, values and behavior.

Although murderers and other violent criminals deserve being sent to prison, a vast majority of prisoners are locked up for non-violent crimes such as low-level property crimes. In this case, they only need help finding jobs. Moreover, some people who commit crimes are mentally ill and doctors can help them much more than prisons.

A conclusion

In conclusion, I believe that prisons are necessary for criminals who are a real danger to society. It may be better if less dangerous criminals receive different punishments.
