The work of preparation:
The motion of the lesson:
Preliminary: 1) How are you
today? Who is absent?
2) At the
previous 2 lessons we found out that tourism can be a problem and what way. We
have also studied what “stereotype” and “prejudices” are.(1-2 minutes)
Motivation part: You have
tried to become a German, a Hungarian, a French, an Italian and a Russian
through gaining information about them at home. As you share your knowledge and
learn from others, you will not only train your English, but also begin to
understand life of other countries as it is. (2 minutes)
Warming-up: Now in order to
make you speak easier further let`s play. The play is called “m&m`s”. While
sweets are distributed the teacher says, ”Grab as much as you wish. Don`t be
too shy”. After it students give as many sentences as many sweets they have.
Each colour means some special subject to discuss. (the list with colours and
their meaning goes to the blackboard). Sentences must be short. (3-5 minutes)
Tasks based on homework:
Please retell this text (“Instructions for safe communication”) adding whatever
you know about mentioned nations` characteristic traits. Please don`t forget
about our gerund. Before you start, please remind us the verbs with
prepositions, after which we use the gerund, not the infinitive. + What is the gerund?
(3-5 minutes).
Think it over and give us a piece
of advice, how to behave with a French, a German etc. in order not to insult
him/her. Only one sentence. (individual work) Before you start, remind me, what
sentences do we call imperative ones. What is the Imperative Mood?(2 minutes)
Retelling and discussion. (from 5 to
10 minutes).
- Training
of some basic set expressions from the text: Now let’s memorize these
expressions:
Should this
happen, I would…
My rule of
behaviour is…
I allow my
guests to … at my place.
If I were you, I
would….
I always feel
good in the presence of…
And now let’s have a rest and
tomorrow I invite you to the restaurant to have breakfast.
Physical training minute + role
play (brainstorming through interactive theatre): Please change your
seats and while doing it stretch your backs and bow your head from right to
left. Two of our tourists will show us, how easily conflict arises. But before
that, please order something from the menu (look for them at your table).
Choose something that will suit your tastes. Now we have two active
participants and all the rest are casual listeners, who cannot stand reacting
what they hear. When you want to add or to contradict something, please use the
phrases: If I were you (a German, a Hungarian etc.) or others from your cards.
“Our dear teachers, the members of our commission, please join our discussion
and give your ideas“
The reflection of problem
solving in less difficult situations (classical brainstorming):
Make two groups: creators
and those who will analyze their ideas. The most important rule for creators
is: to produce ideas quickly without thinking them over. The craziest ones will
suit.
The second part must not
criticize them even with smiles till their time comes. Each idea must be
discussed politely. You use such characteristics as: “impossible, lucky,
interesting idea. It could help/ it couldn’t help and why”.
Situations: What could be done
in order not to this happen? (А small
round loaf is eaten. The fans of different teams are almost enemies.) Change
these stories ends; there must not appear any conflicts, which caused them.
Resume. Teacher, the members
of the commission analyze, what result do we have (Is the problem solved).
General reflection: Today
you were brilliant creators and critics and we together could solve some
problems, but now you know that the best conflict is avoided conflict. So you
tried to learn how to avoid it. As tourist, some of you have not observed our
rules of safe communication; try to be more attentive in the future. As my
English students you get … for your creativity and language. Thank you for your
work.
Instructions for Safe Communication
Today you
are the guests of Canadian Olympic Games in Vancouver. Don`t you mind if we
offer you some basic rules of behavior in international and multicultural
society. Our aim is to prevent conflicts and that is it. So let`s start:
Communication
We in Canada
need greater physical distances for talking than Central Easters, for example.
It is the same concerning North Americans, the Japanese and Asians in general.
If someone stands closer than 4 feet we certainly will move away. Should this
happen, don`t be insulted.
National Traits
·
Don`t say to an Italian or a French that food and sleeping are low and
rude kinds of pleasure. They are the philosophers of everyday life and could
easily teach you to feel good every minute of your life.
And,
dear Italian, don`t promote your wine everywhere, there are people here, who
can be very offended.
·
The motto of a
German is, “Do everything that won`t disturb or insult me”. But take into
consideration that being late for a meeting with a German is troublesome.
Our dear German friend, don`t leave your car and room open,
you are not at home.
·
Don`t say anything ironical about family life in the presence of any
Hungarian, Japanese or Ukrainian woman
Dear madams, don`t discuss careers.
·
Don`t criticize Asian eating habits, otherwise you can be laughed at
concerning your political views or speaking manner. Asians have a very specific
sense of humour as well as the British.
·
Try
not to sit with your legs crossed in the presence of the Chinese and clasp you
hands with Americans, they can think that you show , you are the winner.
Smoking
Here in Canada smoking is not allowed in public places. If you wish to smoke, you must make sure
that you are in a smoking area. This rule can be passed on to your new Canadian
friends` accommodation. Look around – the lack of ashtrays on the tables at
somebody`s place or in a restaurant means you
must not light up.
Alcohol
drinking
Be
attentive! Anyone
caught with an open container of alcohol on the street certainly will be
arrested. And DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) is strictly punished.
And at last, try not to discuss sports
and politics here. It`s too dangerous! Good luck!
