S1: We’re glad to see you in our annual poetic contest …
SSSSS: “Poetry Quiz”
S2: 20 competitors took part in the contest to prove that they are
the best, the most
talented, the most skillful interpreters. By the way, can you remind the rules
of the contest, Kate?
S3: To answer the question “who’s the best?”, our contestants had
to translate 2 extracts from the songs of one very popular pop group, one is
for the 8 and 9 formers and the other one is for 10 and 11 formers.
S4: I hope they guessed which one was it, didn’t they, Irene?
S5: I’m sure of it, Mary! It’s …
SSSSS: One Direction!
S1: Look here, girls, do you like this group?
S2: Certainly!
S3: Without any doubt!
S4:The music is marvelous!
S5: And the guys are so cute!
S1: Girls, I think it’s high time to introduce this group to our
guests!
S2: Quite right you are! And to begin with let’s tell how it all
began.
S3: In 2010 Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and
Louis Tomlinson auditioned as solo candidates for the seventh series of British
television reality singing competition “The X Factor”.
S4: “The X Factor?” What’s this, I wonder?
S5: It’s one of the most popular music shows on British TV.
S1: Is it like our show “The Voice?”
S2: Not exactly but very similar!
S1: I see … And what happened next?
S3: As a matter of fact they failed to progress to the
"Boys" category
And after a suggestion by the guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, they
were put together to form a five-piece boy band at Wembley Arena in London
in July in 2010.
S4: So they were requalified for the "Groups"
category, weren’t they?
S3: Yes, they were. Subsequently, the group got together for two
weeks to get to know each other and to practise. At that moment the name “One
Direction” appeared.
S5: Were they a success in “The X Factor?”
S1: As far as I know “One Direction” finished in the third place.
S4: Immediately after the final, their song "Forever Young”
was leaked onto the Internet. The song is really neat! Just listen!
S2: It makes me be on cloud nine! And I know that in the live
shows within four weeks the group quickly gained popularity in the UK.
S3: And very soon not only in the UK!
S4: In February 2011, they were already topping “The Sunday Times
Best Seller list”.
S5: It was when they flew to Los Angeles to record their debut
album in January, 2011.
S1: And the same month, the boy band and other contestants from
the series participated in the X Factor Live Tour.
S2: Really? A live tour? Where did they go?
S3: In 2012 they visited Australia and North America from April to
July. The tour, resulting in 62 shows, was met positivity both critically and
commercially.
S4: Splendid!
S3: In December, 2011, One Direction had the Up All Night Tour
around the UK.
A recording of a concert from the tour, Up All Night: The Live
Tour, was released in May, 2012.
S1: Girls, do you have a favorite in the group?
S2: Personally I simply adore Zane Jawad Malik.
S3: Wow! You must know everything about him!
S4: Surely! He was born January 12, 1993
in Bradford. Zane was born in the British-Pakistani family. He is a Muslim,
half-Pakistani, a quarter of an Englishman, a quarter Irish. He has three
sisters. Malik began his studies at the Lower Fields, then went to high school
Tong, completed his studies in the public secondary school. Zane did not fit
into the first two schools because of his mixed blood. But after moving to
another school at the age of twelve, Malik says he started to be proud of his
origin and appearance.
S5: Was it he who said at the audition of “The X-Factor”, "I
was looking for experience?”
S4: Right you are! And would you like to know some interesting
facts of him?
S2: Of course!
S4: So then listen! Totally Zane has 24 tattoos on his body.
During his time on X-Factor, his grandfather died. He has a tattoo of the name
of his grandfather Walter in Arabic on his chest. Malik was addicted to
smoking, but surely decided to quit once and for all. His preferences in music
are a street style. He draws inspiration from Michael Jackson, Usher and Ne-Yo.
At the audition Mario sang «Let Me Love You».

S2: And who is he?
S1: Liam Payne! Let me tell you a little bit about him!
Liam was born on August 29, 1993 in Wolverhampton. His father is Geoff Payne,
his mother is Karen Payne. Liam has two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth. His
older sister as a child called it "Cheese head“. I suppose you are not in
the know that in his childhood Liam had serious health problems. He was born
three weeks earlier, with one kidney. Now he has two of them and both are
functioning.
S3: You don’t say so! It’s really astonishing!
S1: And what’s more as a child Liam was often mocked at and he
went to the section on boxing. Liam was also involved in running.
S4: It shows that he is a strong-willed boy!
S1: That’s why I like him so! Liam first came on the show
"X-Factor" in 2008, but after the first round he was advised to
finish school first. Next time in 2010 he was more successful. At the first
audition for "X-Factor" Liam has performed the song “Cry Me A River”.

S5: What a nice song!
S1: But unfortunately, this young man's solo career was cut short.
He did not miss the next stage. But the jury did not want to let him out,
saying: "You're too talented to let you go."
S2: Do you know something interesting about him?
S1: Certainly! Liam knows how to play the guitar and a little
piano. In the album "Up All Night" Liam has over seven minutes solo.
He considers himself boring.
The film causing Liam's cry is "Marley and Me". But
Louis Tomlinson from"One Direction"can always make Liam's smile.
S3: Louis Tomilson? I adore him!
S4: Why? What is so nice about him?
S3: Louis William Tomlinson, born Louis Troy Austin was
born on 24 December, 1991 in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. His parents divorced
when he was young, and he took the name of his stepfather Mark Tomlinson. He
has five younger sisters. Louis attended acting school in Barnsley. He had a
small role in the film “If I Had You”. He was a disciple of the sixth class in Hall
Cross School. In the final year the only thing that bothered him was fun.
Louis says that the greatest influence on him was by Robbie Williams. He also
admires the work of Ed Sheeran considering him "phenomenal."
S4: Tell what do you know about his private life?
S3: I know that
S5: And personally I am fond of Niall James Horan.
S1: Niall? A blonde?
S5: Yes, he has fair hair. I consider him to be the most handsome.
S3: It stands to reason! But can you say a couple of words about
him?
S5: Of course. Niall was born on the13the of September in 1993.
He is from Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland. Niall’s mother is Maura
Gallagher. His father is Bobby Horan. He has an older brother, Greg. Niall’s
parents divorced when he was 5 years old. Niall attended a boyish Christian
school where he sang in the school choir. Niall has been playing the guitar
since his childhood. In one interview, he said of his guitar, “This is the best
gift I got for Christmas”. Niall’s parents noticed his son’s gift for singing,
while traveling by car: “My aunt thought I had a radio. The same thing happened
with Michael Bublé (Italian-Canadian singer). He's my absolute hero, I like
that we have a similar story”.
S4: How extraordinary! He is really a very gifted guy!
S5: For the audience of the show «X-Factor» Niall said, “I'm 16
and I want a big name like Beyonce and Justin Bieber”. He added, “I compare
myself to them, and it’s not a bad comparison. I was always a kid who loved the
music”.
S2: Are there any unusual facts in his biography?
S5: As far as I know he is a big fan of Frank Sinatra and Dean
Martin. Horan is also a fan of rock music, for example of such bands as The
Eagles, Bon Jovi and The Script. Also he likes Ed Sheeran. Ed Sheeran and One
Direction have worked together on a song «Moments». Niall admitted that it was
an honor to work with him. Let’s look at the screen.
S1: Kate, and whom do you like most of all in this group?
S2: Oh, I like Harry Edward Styles. He was born on the 1st
of February in 1994 in the town of Holmes Chapple in Cheshire. He was seven
when their parents divorced. Harry was very happy when his stepfather made an offer of his mother. He has an older sister Gemma.
S3: As I see practically all the boys in the group didn’t have a
very happy childhood.
S2: Exactly so! And maybe it was one of the reasons for their
desire to become prosperous and famous. Louis learnt how to play the piano at
an early age. As a child, he loved to sing, saying that Elvis Presley was the
person who influenced him. Already at school Harry Styles was the leading
singer of his own band, which he called «White Eskimo». Before he came to the
X-Factor, from which, in fact, began his stage career Harry Styles had worked
part-time in a bakery.
S:4 And is it true that it was Harry’s idea to call the group “One
Direction”?
S2: Yes, it was just his idea. And I would like to add some more interesting
facts about Harry. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He is the eldest in the group
One Direction. His dog is named Ted. He does not like tattoos. He prefers a
shower to a bath. His favorite color is dark red. His favorite month of the
year is December.
S3: To draw a kind of conclusion we can say that One Direction is
described as the sparking resurgence in the boy band concept, and a new
“British Invasion” in the United States.
S4: As Niall James Horan says, “We're trying to do something
different from what people would think is the typical kind of boy band. We're
trying to do different kinds of music and we’re just trying to be ourselves,
not squeaky clean.”
S5: And Bill Werde, a representative of Billboard magazine
commented, “There’s a lot of possibility here, there’s a lot of upside, that
level of talent with those kinds of looks, it's really a perfect storm for a
massive, massive successful phenomenon.”
S1: And after all what could be better than one cute boy, if not
five?
