The Queen wants to tell you about
this holiday. Listen to her.
It’s a tradition to celebrate Guy Fawkes’s Day. In 1605,
a man called Guy Fawkes wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament because he
didn’t like the king. They found Guy Fawkes and killed him. Every year we light
fireworks and burn a ‘guy’. You can see bonfires and fireworks. People bring
old boxes, newspapers and wood and make bonfires. Children make a guy, a figure
of a man, and put it on the top of a bonfire. We eat jacket potatoes and hot
dogs and watch the fireworks.

The 14th of February is called St. Valentine’s
Day. It is a day of love and friendship. We send greeting cards to our
sweethearts and friends and ask them to “Be My Valentine”. We also decorate our
classrooms with big red hearts and give red roses and chocolate to our
sweethearts, friends and families.
And here is your task. Fill

It is April Fool’s day! Do you know where this
tradition comes from? Listen and read this text and find the answer.
The 1st of April is April Fool’s Day.
Nobody is certain where this tradition comes from, but it is believed to have
started when the calendar changed to start in January and not in April. Those
people who didn’t know the new system and still thought that the 1st
of April was the 1st day of the year were called “fools”. In schools
pupils play tricks on teachers and teachers play tricks on their pupils.
Read the text once more and find the sentence that
answers the question “When did this tradition start?”
And to get the last key you must decide which of these
sentences are true and which ones are April Fool’s jokes.
Write True or Joke
1.
The Queen of England has got two
birthdays.
2.
Next year British money is
changing.
Robbie Williams is on all the notes.
3.
David Beckham pays 300jfor a haircut.
4.
In London they are building a new
Big Ben clock with a digital watch face.
5.
In Scotland the national food is
sheep’s stomach.
6.
In England you can buy chocolate
crisps.
(Key: 1. true 2. joke 3. true

The 1st of April
is April Fool’s Day. Nobody is certain where this tradition comes from, but it
is believed to have started when the calendar changed to start in January and
not in April. Those people who didn’t know the new system and still thought
that the 1st of April was the 1st day of the year were
called “fools”. In schools pupils play tricks on teachers and teachers play
tricks on their pupils.
