1. Організаційний момент
Teacher: Good morning boys and girls! I am very glad to see you.
Pupils: Good morning dear teacher.

T: Dear friends! Today we have an unusual lesson, a travelling competition “Do You Know the UK?” You’ll show us your knowledge of the UK. We’ll speak about the interesting places or the country, show them in the pictures, speak about the capital and the sights of it and about some interesting facts of the country.
There are four teams at the lesson. We’ll travel to Great Britain and have different activities and creative tasks. Every country have prepared trial for us. I wish you every success and pleasure. The best group will get excellent marks.

Teacher: The motto of our lesson is ‘World is a book and those who don’t travel, read only one page’. At the end of our lesson we come back to this quotation and explain it.
Now let’s begin our travelling to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Let’s choose transport together. Should we go by train , by plane, by bus, by car, by ship or on foot? And why? What do you think about it?(слайд 2)
P1: To my mind we should go by train. I like to travel by train.
P2: By train? Are you sure? As far as I know Great Britain is an island state. How can we get there by train?
P1: – Do you know there is a tunnel under the channel and now people can go to Great Britain both by train and by car.
P3: I think we should go by ship. It’s so interesting to travel by ship and see different interesting places, feel fresh water air and feel ourselves free.
P4: As for me we should travel by plane because the distance between Ukraine and Great Britain is long. And of course it will be faster to travel by plane. We will safe a lot of time and can visit many different interesting places.
Teacher: Good ideas. I absolutely agree with you. But I think that travelling by plane will be better for us.

P1: Wales is a country situated in the West of Britain. St. David is the patron saint of Wales. On 1 st March, St. David’s Day, patriotic Welsh people wear a leek or a daffodil, both symbols of Wales.
The population of Wales is about three million. The area of Wales is about 21 000 sq. km.
Wales is agricurtural, there are few cities there, rather small and unimportant. The west coast, mid Wales and North Wales are wild and beautiful. Wales has high mountains, including Mount Snowdon, the second highest mountain in Britain. Snowdon looks very peaceful and beautiful.
Cardiff, the modern capital of Wales, has a Roman castle and a modern shopping centre. Cardiff is an industrial city, which also has a cathedral, a university. Every year, an international festival called Eisteddfod is held in the town of Llangollen. People come from all over the world to recite poetry, sing and dance in this colourful competition.
There are two national languages in Wales - the Welsh language, which is spoken widely, especially in the North of the country and English. Both these languages are taught in schools.
The flag of Wales, with its red dragon, is one of the oldest in the world. It was brought to Britain by the Romans. The Welsh call their country Cymru and themselves Cymry, a word which has the same root as a "camrador” (friend, comrade).

P2 : England is the largest and the richest part of GB. England shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. It is closer to continental Europe than any other part of Britain. The Channel Tunnel directly links England to France.
Its’ capital is London. The biggest industrial cities are London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, and other interesting cities as York, Chester, Oxford, and Cambridge. England is often subdivided into three parts: the South, the Midlands and the North.
Stonehenge is one of the most popular prehistoric places in England. It is situate in the south-west of England.
Oxford is the home of oldest English university. Christ Church is the most famous college of university. Cambridge is the home of the second oldest university of England. York was the capital of Northern England. And it is one of the best preserved Medieval cities not only in England, but also in whole Europe. It was built by romans. Ruled by Vikings and conquered by Anglo-Saxon.
The three national symbols of England are the St. George's cross, the red rose and the Three Lions crest. The national flower of England is the rose. The flower has been adopted as England’s emblem since the time of the Wars of the Roses.

P3: Scotland is one of four parts of the GB. Scotland's area is more than half as big as England's. The main cities of the country are its capital Edinburgh and the main industrial center Glasgow.
There is the Old Scotland and the New Scotland. New Scotland is a land of steel and ships, coal and power, of factories and great ports, of modern literature and music. The Old Scotland is the land of ballads, legendary heroes defending its independence, legendary knights, outlaws, beautiful queens, brave and cruel kings. And the shadow of Old Scotland has its place in the New Scotland.
Scotland is a land of mountains, wild moorlands, narrow valleys and plains. The Highlands of Scotland are among the oldest mountains in the world. The highest of them is Ben Nevis.
And of course everyone knows about the Loch Ness, Monster. "Nessie" is said to be about six meters long, with a long, thin neck.
The national flower of Scotland is the thistle, a prickly-leaved purple flower which was first used in the 15th century as a symbol of defence. The Scottish Bluebell is also seen as the flower of Scotland. There is a national dress of Scotland, the kilt. It is the best walking dress yet invented by men: there is up 5 meters of material in it.

P4: Northern Ireland is integral part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It situated in the northeastern portion of the island of Ireland. Northern Ireland is bounded on the north and northeast by the North Channel, on the southeast by the Irish Sea, and on the south and west by the Republic of Ireland. It includes Rathlin Island in the North Channel and several smaller offshore islands.
The total area of Northern Ireland is 14,148 sq km. The country consists mainly of a low, flat plain in the approximate center of which is Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles. The climate of Northern Ireland is mild and damp throughout the year.
The most valuable natural resources of Northern Ireland are its fertile soil and rich pasturelands. Natural waterpower is abundant. The chief minerals are basalt, limestone, sand and gravel, granite, chalk, clay, and shale; bauxite, iron ore, and coal also are found in small amounts.
The capital and largest city of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The other major city in Northern Ireland is Londonderry.
Belfast is the base of Opera Northern Ireland, which presents seasons at the Grand Opera House in the city, and also tours the province.
The national flower of Northern Ireland is the shamrock, a three-leaved plant similar to clover. An Irish tale tells of how Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day.
