Half
an hour later I was in his office with a thick book in front of me. It was
the Professor’s lecture written for a scientific conference. I couldn’t
understand a word but it was clear that the Professor spoke to the audience
in an unfriendly way. Then I had an idea to write a letter to the Professor
and send it with my friend’s address on it. When the letter was finished I
read it to Tarp. The letter said that a poor student of nature (that was me!)
asked for an interview with the professor. He wanted to discuss some new
scientific problems.
“Well,
not bad, really. But what are you doing to do then?” asked Tarp.
“To
get where. When I am in his room...”
“When
you are in his room, you need a gun or something like that to save your life.
Remember, he is a dangerous character, everyone hates him”.

1) Happiness

3) School
trip
4) Street art
5) A mountain climber
6) Walk in the park
A.
Going through the forest is my favourite part of the walk. My dog Benji loves
it too. I’m Grace. I live on a farm with my parents and I take Benji for a walk
most days after school. While Benji’s playing, I stop to take a photo of a
butterfly. I’m thinking about posting it on Facebook, but then I hear Benji barking.
He’s jumping and running around a boy. The poor boy looks worried. 'Benji,
stop! Come here!' I call and throw him his ball. I’m about to say sorry to the
boy, but he’s gone.
B.
Some adventurers are always looking for a new challenge. Meagan McGrath from
Canada has climbed mountains, ridden a bike across Canada and run races in the
desert. But her most incredible journey was a skiing trip to the South Pole. As
she skied, Meagan pulled a sledge with a tent and all her food. She skied
through terrible storms and freezing temperatures for forty days till she
arrived at the South Pole.
C.
In Berlin in Germany, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They
eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Sometimes they eat vegetables from
gardens and they walk in the street and cause accidents. Some people like the
pigs and they give them food and water to drink. Other people do not like the
pigs. In Moscow in Russia, there are 35,000 wild dogs. The dogs live in parks,
old houses, markets and train stations. Some dogs live in groups and others
live alone. People give them food and water. Some people make small houses for
the dogs in their gardens. This helps the dogs in winter, when the temperature
in Moscow is -10 ºC and there is a lot of snow and ice.
D.
Modern graffiti began in big cities in the United States in the 1970s. In New
York, young people wrote their names, or 'tags', in pen on walls around the
city. One of the first 'taggers' was a teenager called Demetrius. His tag was
TAKI 183. He wrote his tag on walls and in stations in New York. Other
teenagers saw Demetrius's tag and started writing their tags too. Soon, there
were tags on walls, buses and trains all over New York. Then, some teenagers
started writing their tags with aerosol paint. Their tags were bigger and more
colourful. Aerosol paint graffiti became very popular in the 1970s and 1980s.
It appeared on trains, buses and walls around the world.
E.
Do you know what makes you happy or do you just think you know? At first, these
two questions look the same. If you think something makes you happy, then it
makes you happy. You know yourself, don’t you? Write a list of all the things
that make you happy. How many of them are fun? Most of them? So, if you spend
your time doing all these fun things, you’ll be really happy, won’t you? Well,
maybe not. For most people, fun isn’t enough for real happiness. Paul Dolan
wrote a book called Happiness by Design. He thinks happiness comes from both
pleasure and purpose. If most of the things on your list are about pleasure
that is what you think makes you happy. But you also need activities with purpose.

There
were hundreds of people on the boat. It was hot in the sun, a lovely day.
People watched the sea and the small boats. I liked being in the sun and
thinking about the two weeks holiday in Spain. Old Webb started one of his
stories about Argentina, but I didn't listen. I started to look at the
people. And this girl was there, near me, a really good looking girl with
nice brown eyes and black hair. I'm really shy and I'm not very good with
girls. I didn't talk to her then, but I watched her with her sister and her
mother and father. Then they walked away and she smiled at me for a moment
before they went. My brother Dave saw her, and he laughed quietly at my red
face. I
wanted to see her again, perhaps in the cafe at lunchtime or perhaps in the
cinema in the afternoon. But she wasn't there and I don't remember the film.

1) The

robots
3) Black

4) Unknown

5) Why

6) Lost
Egyptian queen
A. What do you think of
when you read the word ‘robot’? Many people think about big machines in car
factories or futuristic monsters in films. Few of us think about the past. But
people were building incredible machines with human abilities hundreds of years
ago! For example, Egyptian texts from 1100 BC mention moving statues which
‘chose’ the next king. None of these statues exists, but probably they were
built using the ancient Egyptians’ mechanical technology.
B. Queen
Hatshepsut was the only woman to rule ancient Egypt while the kingdom was at
the height of its wealth and power, from about 1502 to 1482 B.C. Of all the
female pharaohs–including Cleopatra and Nefertiti–Hatshepsut’s reign was the
longest and most successful. While in power, she established trade routes and
built hundreds of monuments and temples throughout Egypt. Despite her
prosperous reign, both her mummy and her legacy were virtually erased from
Egyptian history. Many historians believe that Tuthmose III, Hatshepsut’s
stepson, destroyed records and monuments bearing her name. It may have been his
revenge.
C. The day after
Thanksgiving has become America’s biggest shopping day. Closed all day on
Thursday, shopping centres all across the nation open early on Friday. Some of
them open at 12:01 Friday morning, while others open at 4 a.m. Some
“sleepyhead“ shopping centres, like Target this year, don’t open their doors on
Friday until 6 a.m. From Friday to the day before Christmas, this is the season
when businesses make nearly 25 per cent of what they earn in a year. This
season puts many businesses “in the black”, that is, they make the money they
need for the year.
D. Ashrita Furman is a
record-breaking record-breaker: He has set more records than anyone else in the
world! In the last 40 years, he has established more than 600 records! As a
child, Ashrita loved reading the Guinness Book of World Records. He wanted to
be in it too. But he thought people had to be good at sports to be in the book.
He wasn’t a good athlete. He felt his dream would never come true. But later in
life, Ashrita learned meditation, and with this, he learned that nothing is
impossible. He tested this idea in 1978 by entering a 24-hour bike race in New
York. Without any training, Ashrita came third! After that, he started thinking
about breaking records again.
E. Petra Engels owns
19,571 erasers, Carol Vaughn has 1,221 bars of soap, and Ralf Shrőder has a
collection of 14,502 packets of sugar. Many people love to collect things, but
why? Psychologists and collectors have different opinions. The psychologist
Carl Jung believed that collecting is part of our ancient human history.
Thousands of years ago, humans collected nuts and berries. They kept them
carefully and ate them when there was no food. The best collectors survived
long cold winters or seasons without rain. Their genes passed to future
generations. Nowadays, we still have a collecting instinct.

We
need to reduce billions of tonnes of carbon, but one person makes just over
one tonne a year. So what can a single person do?
First you can find out more. This is a short book and it can only tell you a
little about climate change. But scientists are learning new things about the
climate all the time. When you know more, you can ask yourself two questions:
is climate change an important problem? Do I want to do something about it?
If you can answer yes to two these questions, then you have already started
to do something about it. You have started to change yourself. And that is
the first thing to do. Next you can start to change other people. This is not
as hard as you think. If you talk about climate change to your friends, then
you will help them to change themselves. And if everyone talks about climate
change, then our government will want to do something about it.

2. Shopping
3. Accomodation
4. Daily
routine
5. Changes
in reading habits
6. Madagascar
– when to go
A. Look around on your
next plane trip. The iPad is the new pacifier for babies and toddlers. Younger
school-aged children read stories on smartphones; older kids don’t read at all,
but hunch over video games. Parents and other passengers read on tablets or
skim a flotilla of email and news feeds. Unbeknown to most of us, an invisible,
game-changing transformation links everyone in this picture: the neuronal
circuit that underlies the brain’s ability to read is subtly, rapidly changing
and this has implications for everyone from the pre-reading toddler to the
expert adult.
B. Madagascar has two
seasons, a warm, wet season from November to April, and a cooler dry season
between May and October. However, different parts of the country have very
different weather. The east coast is hotter and wetter, with up to 4000mm of
rainfall per year. In the rainy season, there are strong winds, and these can
cause a lot of damage. Avoid visiting eastern Madagascar between January and
March because the weather can make road travel very difficult. The dry season
is cooler and more pleasant.
C. You’re 16 and finally
you can leave school! By now, you’re probably sick of teachers, desks, tests
and exams. But don’t just run for the exit. You need to think carefully about
what to do next. If you want a professional career, you will need to go to
university and get a degree. To do that, you need to stay at high school for
another two years. But you needn’t stay at the same place. There are several
options in the district of Northacre. St. Leopold’s School has the best pass rate
of all the high schools in the district. It offers a wide range of subjects in
the humanities and sciences. Knowle Grammar School is a state school, so there
are no fees, and it has excellent tuition and facilities. It is a boys’ school
from the ages of 11-16, but from 16-18 it is co-educational.
D. Spring House is
located in one of the most beautiful parts of Sussex, close to the Sussex Downs
and the Seven Sisters Country Park. This detached house has spacious
accommodation with comfortable furniture in a traditional style. The house is
set in beautiful gardens, bordered by a river, perfect for fishing. A boat is
available for visitors to use. Ground floor: living room and dining room. Step
to kitchen, with electric cooker, dishwasher and microwave. Shower room with
toilet. Steep steps to first floor: 2 double bedrooms, one with en-suite
bathroom, 1 single bedroom, 2 twin bedrooms, bathroom with separate shower and
toilet. Second floor: 1 single, 1 twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom and
toilet. Open fire in living room (1 basket of wood included). TV and DVD
player. Central heating.
E. Gatesbridge’s new
Merriwether Mall is opening this September. With an area of 320,000 square
metres, the Merriweather Mall will be the biggest mall in the south west. It’s
located close to the motorway, has its own bus station and 2000 car parking
spaces, so it is convenient for everyone. The mall has five areas, all under
cover. The largest, Main Street, is a shopping area on three floors. Here,
you’ll find all the major chain stores and department stores. You can buy
fashion items and all the famous brand names. There is also a large chemist. Situated
on two levels, the market square is where you can find traditional market
stalls. On the lower floor, there are food stalls, including a butcher’s,

For
two long years I lived the life of a slave. I worked in the house and the
garden, and every day I planned to escape, but it was never possible. I
thought about it day and night. My master liked to go fishing in a little
boat, and he always took me with him. A ma n called Moely, and a young boy
also went with us. One day my master said to us, 'Some of my friends want to
go fishing tomorrow. Get the boat ready.' So we put a lot of food and drink
on the boat, and the next morning, we waited for my master and his friends.
But when my master arrived, he was alone. ' My friends don't want to go
fishing today,' he said to me. 'But you go with Moely and the boy, and catch
some fish for our supper tonight.' 'Yes, master,' I answered (quietly, but
inside I was excited. 'Perhaps now I can escape,' I said to myself. My master
went back to his friends and we took the boat out to sea. For a time we
fished quietly, an d then I moved carefully behind Moely and knocked him into
the water. 'Swim!' I cried. 'Swim to the shore!'

A. Day five of the
Italian adventure and we are in Naples. We arrived here early yesterday in the
morning, but as usual we were only at the hotel for about five minutes before
Dad wanted to take us somewhere. This time it was to the ancient city of
Pompeii near Naples. I didn’t really want to go. I wanted to go shopping for
shoes. We travelled there by train. The journey didn’t take long – but long
enough for Dad to tell us a bit about the history. Many years ago, Pompeii was
a large Italian city near a volcano called Mount Vesuvius.
B. Last Saturday was the
final of the women’s singles at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, played (of
course) at the Wimbledon tennis club. My family was lucky enough to get
tickets. When you got there, we went to the court and found our seats. Of
course the stadium was full and everyone was very excited. It was brilliant! At
ten to two, the players came out: Marion Bartoli from France and Sabine Lisicki
from Germany. At first, I was sure Lisicki was going to win but when the match
started, it was clear that I was wrong.
C. They eat wild animals,
plants, berries, nuts and insects. They hunt with bows and arrows. There are a
lot of dangerous snakes, spiders and scorpions. There are lions, leopards,
cheetahs, and hyenas. It’s one of the southern Africa’s hottest places, and
there is often no water. Then they have to get their water from plants, for
example from desert melons. When they are ill, there are no hospitals. The
people have to get their medicine from plants too. They are the San, the last
people living in the Kalahari. The San people have another name – “bush
people”.
D. A long time ago,
people were very different from the way we are now. For example, if you find a
really old house somewhere, you’ll see that the doors are usually much lower
than they are today. Why? Because hundreds of years ago people were shorter.
Over time, the human body changes to adapt to a new way of life. Can we expect
the human body to change in the future? For sure. And the main reason is that
we have more and more technology, and it is changing how we live.
E. Nora is one of new

Nora is from Toronto, Canada and until she was 30, she had a business there.
But then she made a big decision. Her dream was to travel the world – and to do
it before she got old! So she sold her business and got rid of her belongings.
And off she went. Nora hasn’t got rich parents or anyone who gives her money.
And she doesn’t have a high-paying job. But she’s learned how to travel without
spending lots of money.

Three
months passed. I had not met the owner of Thornfield Hall. Mr. Rochester had
not come home. One January afternoon, I went out and I walked towards the road.
I was going to the village of Hay. I was going to post a letter in the
village. Hay was two miles from Thornfield Hall. The day was fine but it was
very cold. I walked quickly and soon I was near
the
village. Suddenly, a big black-and-white dog ran past me. A moment later, a
man on a black horse followed the dog.
Then, I heard an angry shout. The dog ran past me again. It was barking
loudly. I turned round. The horse had fallen on the icy ground and the man
had fallen from the horse. 1 walked towards them.
'Can

A “How do you get to
school? This question often gets an answer like “By bus” or “I walk” or “My
parents take me by car”. But not always there are children in many different
parts of the world who, every day, have to go on a different journey in order
to get to their lessons. They travel for kilometres on foot, or by boat,
bicycle, donkey or train. They cross deserts, mountains, rivers, snow and ice:
for example, the children of Inupiat, community in Alaska go to school and then
come back when it is dark, in extremely cold temperatures. And they are not the
only ones – kids in many countries do this and more.
B I’ve been a taxi driver
for about five years. Before that I was a bus driver in London, and I enjoyed
it, but I wanted to be more independent so I changed and started driving my
taxi. Oh, yes. I’ve had film stars, politicians, you know, lots of famous
people. About a year ago, a really famous actor got in my taxi. I took him to
the airport. There was a lot of traffic and it took a long time to get there,
so he missed his plane. It wasn’t my fault but when he got out of the taxi, he
said some things that weren’t very polite! I said to him: “Next time, take a
bus!”
C. In 1908, many Germans
arrived in Luderitz in the southern African country of Namibia. They wanted to
look for diamonds and they found a lot. With the money from the diamonds they
built the town of Kolmanskop. It had lots of beautiful buildings, a hospital, a
school, and even a theatre. But when there weren’t any more diamonds, they left
the town. These days the only things that visitors to Kolmanskop see are empty
buildings and a lot of sand. In 1978, a building company started building a
holiday resort in the Sanzhi District of New Taipei City.
D. Our town looks a mess
and that’s not good for tourism. I hate the litter in our streets. Why can’t
people put it in the bins? It’s not difficult. We need to educate people
quickly. We need more litter bins and billboards saying “Don’t drop it – Bin
it!” and things like that. We also need to punish people who drop litter. I
think they should spend a day picking it up. People always complain about the
kids in the town. They don’t like us hanging out in the shopping centre. They
say they don’t feel safe. But they’re wrong. We never cause trouble. We only
meet up there because there’s nowhere for us to go.
E. I was on holiday with
my family in California a few years ago, when Dad saw an advert for “The
craziest house in the world” in the local paper. We decided to visit it, but on
the way there we got lost. Dad didn’t want to ask anyone for directions, but
after half an hour Mum told him to stop. We found a really helpful man on a
street in the town. He gave us a map for free. Ten minutes later, we were at
the house. From the outside, it just looked like a normal big house. When we
went inside we saw how amazing it was.
