The Fox and the cock
One day in summer a fox saw a cock near a village. It was time for dinner and the fox decided to eat the cock. He went up to the cock and said to him: “Your father could sing very well. Can you sing well too?” the cock shut his eyes and began to sing. The fox caught the cock in its mouth and ran away.
A farmer saw the fox and cried out to the other farmers: “Look! A fox has caught our cock!». The cock heard the farmer and said to the fox: “Do you hear what that farmer is saying? He says that I’m their cock. Tell them that I’m your cock now.” When the fox opened its mouth to say it, the cock jumped up into a tree. He cried out to the fox: “I’m not your cock, I’m their cock.” The poor fox beat his head on the tree and said: “Mouth, you talk too much and we have no dinner today.”
Two Friends and the Bear.
Once two friends were in a thick forest, when they met a bear. One of the men was afraid of the bear. He ran to a high tree and got up into it. The other man understood that he couldn’t stand up against a big bear. He lay down on the grass. “The bear will think that I’m dead,” he said to himself. The man thought that bears do not attack dead people. The bear came up to the man on the grass, sniffed at his nose and ears and went away. The other man got down from the tree.
“What did the bear say in your ear?” he asked him.
“He told me,” was the answer, “not to go into the forest with a bad friend who will not help you when there is a danger”.
An Englishman in Spain.
An Englishman was in Spain. He went to a little café for breakfast. He only spoke English and the waiter did not know any English at all. The man wanted some milk. He said to the waiter: “Please, bring me a glass of milk.” But the waiter did not understand him. Then the Englishman took out a peace of paper and wrote on it “Milk”. The waiter did not understand it either. Then the man drew a cow on a piece of paper. The waiter looked at the picture and went away. Soon he came back and brought a ticket for a bullfight.
Jonathan Swift and his Servant.
Jonathan Swift, the famous English writer, once went into the country with his servant. In the morning when he wanted to put on his boots, he saw that they were not clean.
“How is this, Tom?” said Swift when he saw them. “Why haven’t you cleaned my boots?”
“You see,” said Tom “It’s very dirty out today. If you go out, your boots again will be dirty, so I didn’t clean them.”
Swift thought a little and said, “ Go and get ready, we’ll go out in a minute or two.”
“But, I haven’t had my breakfast. I am hungry.”
“I know,” said Swift, “but if you have your breakfast you will again be hungry in a few hours, so today you will have no breakfast.”
A Small Picture.
A rich man once asked a great painter to paint a small picture for him. Next day the painter came and brought him the small picture.
“In is a beautiful picture”, said the rich man. “How much do you want for it?”
“One thousand dollars,” answered the painter.
“One thousand dollars for such a small picture?” cried the rich man. “You painted it in one day and you want one thousand dollars for one day’s work?”
“Yes, I painted it in one day, but I worked thirty years in order to learn how to paint it in one day,” answered the painter.

The Lion and the Mouse.
One afternoon a lion went to sleep in the forest and did not hear what was happening around him. Soon a little mouse ran up his back and sat there. The lion woke up and looked at the mouse. Then he said, “I shall kill you for waking me up!”
When the mouse heard these words he said, “Please, please do not kill me. One day I may help you.” “What?” said the lion. “How can you, a little mouse, help me, the great lion?” He began to laugh. He laughed and laughed. Then he said, “All right, mouse, run away. I am not going to kill you. Will you help me? Ha! Ha! ” One day some people placed a large net in the forest. When the little mouse came to that place he saw the lion in the net. “I cannot get out of the net,” said the lion. “Can you help me, little mouse?
“Oh, just a minute“, the mouse said to the lion. “I shall help you. Let‘s see what I can do.”
The mouse worked very quickly with his teeth and soon the lion stood up.
“Well,” said the mouse. “You laughed at me. Now you see that a little mouse can help a great lion.”
The lion said, “Thank you, little mouse” and went away into the forest.
Jonathan Swift and a Maidservant.
Jonathan Swift, the famous English author who wrote “Gulliver’s Travels”, liked order in everything. All the people in his house had to shut the door behind them when they came into a room and when they left it.
One day a maidservant came and asked him to let her visit her sister who lived ten miles away. Swift not only agreed, but let her go there in his own carriage. The girl was so happy that she forgot to shut the door when she left the room. Swift let her go; but about half an hour later he ordered one of the servants to ride after the carriage, and tell the girl come back. The poor girl had to turn back. When she came into Swift’s room, her face was unhappy and she asked him what he wanted.
“I only want you to shut the door,” was his answer.
“Now you may go to visit your sister. I wish you a pleasant journey.
The Painter and the Doctor.
Turner, the great English painter had a dog, which he loved very much. One day the dog fell down and broke a leg. Turner sent for a doctor. He did not want to send for a veterinary; he sent for the best doctor in London.
When the doctor came, Turner said: “Doctor, I am happy you have come. My dog has broken a leg. I know that you are too great a doctor for work of this kind, but please, do it. It is so important for me”.
The doctor was angry but he did not show it. He did, what the painter asked him to do. Next day the doctor asked Turner to come to his house. “The doctor wants to see me about my dog”, thought Turner.
When Turner reached the doctor’s house, the doctor said:” Mr. Turner, I am so happy to see you. I want to ask you to paint my door. I know that you are too great a painter for this work, but please do it. It is so important for me”.
A Pleasant Trip.
An Englishman who was in France on a short visit wanted to go back to England. He had only enough money to pay for his ticket. As he knew, that the trip would take only two days, he decided that he could live without eating those two days. So, he bought a ticket and got on the ship. When dinnertime came, he was hungry. In the evening he was even hungrier, but when the waiter came to ask him to have supper, he said he was seasick, and he went to sleep hungry. The next morning the Englishman felt half-dead with hunger. So, when dinner time came, he went to the dining-room and ate everything that was on the table before him. When dinner was over, he quickly got up and went to his cabin. In the evening when the ship was not far from London, he ate his supper and said to the waiter:
“Bring me the bill for my meals.”
But the waiter asked:
“For the dinner and supper I ate.”
“But you paid for your meals when you bought the ticket”, answered the waiter.
The Wolf and the Lamb A lamb was grazing with a flock of sheep one day. She soon found some sweet grass at the edge of the field. Farther and farther she went, away from the others. She was enjoying herself so much that she did not notice a wolf coming nearer to her. However, when it pounced on her, she was quick to start pleading, “Please, please don’t eat me yet. My stomach is full of grass. If you wait a while, I will taste much better.” The wolf thought that was a good idea, so he sat down and waited. After a while, the lamb said, “If you allow me to dance, the grass in my stomach will be digested faster.” Again the wolf agreed. While the lamb was dancing, she had a new idea. She said, “Please take the bell from around my neck. If you ring it as hard as you can, I will be able to dance even faster.” The wolf took the bell and rang it as hard as he could. The shepherd heard the bell ringing and quickly sent his dogs to find the missing lamb. The barking dogs frightened the wolf away and saved the lamb’s life.
The Bundle of Sticks A father had a family of sons who were always quarreling among themselves. When he failed to solve their fights with his advice, one day he told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the bundle into the hands of them and ordered them to break it in pieces. They tried with all their strength, but were not able to do it. Next, he opened the bundle, took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into his sons' hands, and asked them to break it, and they could do so very easily. He told them: "My sons, if you stay together and help each other, you will be as strong as this bundle, and no enemy can beat you; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks. "The sons understood him, thanked, and promised the father always to be together.

В современных условиях развития нашего общества возрастает роль активности человека, его умения организовать свою деятельность. В связи с этим особую актуальность приобретает проблема развития коммуникативных способностей, так как наличие их высокого уровня, хотя и не гарантирует успеха в учебной, профессиональной, творческой и других видах деятельности, но создает для него определенную основу. Эта проблема непосредственно вытекает и из современных требований к выпускникам общеобразовательных школ.
При этом на уроках иностранного языка должны использоваться методы активного обучения, позволяющие включить учащихся в коммуникативную деятельность, в процессе которой и происходит развитие коммуникативных способностей школьников.
