Pupil 1: - Dear guests! Dear boys & girls!

Pupil 2: - Nice to see you at our St. Valentine’s party.

Pupil 1: There are many legends about St. Valentine. Legends are stories that are handed down from the past. No one really knows the actual origin of Valentine’s Day. Let’s get acquainted with some versions of this holiday.

Pupil 2: Существует много легенд о Валентине. Легенды – это рассказы, повествующие о событиях прошлого. Никто не знает настоящего происхождения Дня Валентина. Давайте познакомимся с некоторыми версиями этого праздника.

Pupil 1: - Many historians seem to trace it to an ancient Roman festival called “Lupercalia”. This was held on February, 15 to honour Faunus the God of animal life, hunting, herding, the patron of husbandary, & the guardian of the secret love of nature.

Pupil 2: Многим историкам кажется, что следы празника ведут в древний Рим, к фестивалю под названием «Луперцалия» (от латинского слова «Lupo» - “Волчица”). Как известно, по легенде именно волчица вскормила своим молоком братьев Ромула и Рема – основателей Рима. Этот фестиваль проводился 15 февраля в честь бога Фавна – покровителя животных, охоты, земледелия и хранителя секретной любви природы.

Pupil 1:  Other believe that the world “valentine” came from a Norman world “galantine”, which means “a gallant” or a “lover”.

Pupil 2: Другие верили, что слово «валентин» произошло от нормандского слова «галант», которое означало «ухажер», «кавалер».

Pupil 1: Some people connect the celebrating of Valentine’s Day with an old English belief that birds choose their pair on the 14 of February.  This is, of course, possible as spring is less than a month away.

Pupil 2: Некоторые люди связывают празднование дня Валентина со старым английским поверьем о том, что птицы выбирают себе пару именно 14 февраля.

Pupil 1: - There was Valentine who was a good friend to children. Because he would not worship the gods decreed the Roman emperor, he was put in prison. While he was imprisoned, the children , that he had befriended,  missed him & sent him loving notes. He was supposedly executed on the 14 February AD 270.

Pupil 2: Еще одна легенда гласит, что жил некий Валентин, который был очень добр к детям. Оттого, что он не подчинился приказам римского императора, избранного богами, его посадили в тюрьму. Предположительно, он был казнен 14 февраля 270 г. 

Pupil 1: The most wide-known legend connects Valentine’s Day with saints of the early Christian Church. According to one story, St. Valentine was a priest who had married young couples against the orders of the Roman Emperor Claudius II, who believed that single young men made better soldiers. This story goes back to about A.D.269. He fell in love with the daughter of his executioner. The girl was very beautiful but blind…

Pupil 2:  Самая распространенная легенда связывает день Валентина со святыми ранней христианской церкви. Согласно этой истории, Св. Валентин был священником,  который венчал влюбленных, нарушая при этом приказ римского императора Клаудиуса 2-го, запрещавший солдатам жениться в течение своей военной службы. Когда Клаудиус узнал об этом, он казнил Валентина, побив его камнями и отрубив ему голову.

Он был казнен  14 февраля  в 269 году после Р.Х. Позже он  был канонизирован церковью. По слухам, в то время, когда Валентин в тюрьме ожидал выполнения приговора, он влюбился в слепую дочь тюремщика и вылечил ее слепоту. Считается, что перед своей казнью он послал ей прощальное послание, подписанное «от твоего Валентина».

 (Сценка1. Входит Клавдий. За ним два солдата. Становятся позади него)

The Roman emperor Claudius II: - My Еmpire will be the strongest, the largest, the richest! I say this – Claudius the Second! But I need more brave men, more soldiers. Marriage makes men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars. So I order my soldiers not to get married. Everyone, who will disobey my order, will be put to death!

(Уходят.)

Pupil 1. - But at that time there was a kindly priest named Valentine. He couldn't agree with the emperor's decision. When he saw that young couples were truly in love, he married them secretly.

(Входит священник. Молится. Выходят юноша и девушка. Они падают на колени и умоляют священника совершить обряд бракосочетания.

Boy: - Oh, priest. We’re in love. We cannot live apart.

Girl: Please, go through the wedding ceremony. Marry us.

Valentine: - My daughter! My son! I declare you husband and wife!

 Врывается стража.

Стражник 1: Priest, you’ve disobeyed  the emperor’s order so you are condemned to death!

Стражник 2: To prison! To Tower!

Pupil 1: So Valentine was put in prison. Being imprisoned he met a blind girl and fell in love with her.

(Следующая сцена: Священник в тюрьме. Входит тюремщик с дочерью.)

Священник: What a beautiful girl!

Тюремщик: This is my daughter. She is blind! She will probably never see the light, the trees ! (Рыдает).

Священник: I'll help her by working a miracle!

(Через некоторое время дочь тюремщика показывает, что к ней вернулось зрение.)

Девушка: I'm so grateful to you. Even in prison you, Valentine, showed your love for everyone and restored my sight!

Священник: Unfortunately,  tomorrow, on the 14 of February, I am to die. But I 'm scared and I want to tell everybody on earth, "I love you. I'm your Valentine”

Pupil 2:  Just before his death, on February 14, he sent her a farewell message signed “from your Valentine'.

Pupil 1: - The idea of paper valentines spread thought Europe. They began to take the place of Valentine’s gifts. For a long time valentines were made and signed by hand. Each valentine card has its own verse or sign.

Pupil 1:  Nowadays Valentine cards are made not only from paper. People use different materials: plastic, silk, glass.  Now let’s watch a short film about valentines.

Pupil 1: For many centuries people think about love, they create poems, novels, songs. John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Abba, Modern Talking and many others wrote and sang about love. The 10^th -formers will sing “The Roxette” song ‘Listen to your heart’

Pupil 2: How can we manage without poetry? As we have said “At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet”. Each century had got its famous artists. We’ll return to past centuries and listen to different poems and their translation by great men.

Pupil 1:This day is connected with different traditions and customs. One of the customs the young people liked was name-drawing. The names of the girls were written on slips or papers & put into a jar. Each young man drew a slip. The girl whose name he drew was to be his sweetheart for a year.

Pupil 2:  Этот день связан с различными традициями и обрядами. Один из таких очень нравился молодым людям. Имена девушек писали на клочках бумаги и складывали в кувшин. Каждый молодой человек вытаскивал бумажку. Девушка, имя которой было написано там, становилась его возлюбленной на целый год

Pupil 1: In England in the 1700’s young ladies wrote men’s names on scraps or paper, rolled each in a ball & dropped them into water. The 1^st paper to appear on the surface had the name or the lady’s true love.

Pupil 2: В Англии в 1700-х годах молодые дамы писали имена мужчин на бумажках, сворачивали каждую в шарик и бросали в воду. Первая бумажка, которая всплывала, называла имя того, кто был влюблен в эту даму.

Pupil 1 : In Italy a young girl would stand at her window for half an hour before sunrise. The first man to appear would be her husband! If no one went by, she would not be married that year!

Pupil 2: В Италии молодые девушки встречали рассвет у окна. Имя того мужчины, который первым проходил мимо, становилось именем будущего мужа. Если никто не проходил мимо, это означало, что девушка не выйдет замуж в тот год.

Pupil 1. In Germany girls tried another way of learning whom they would marry. They planted onions on St. Valentine’s Day. Each onion had the man’s name. She thought she would marry the man whose onion sprouted first.

 Pupil 2: В Германии девушки иначе узнавали имя будущего мужа. В День Валентина они высаживали луковицы, которым давали мужские имена. Луковица, которая прорастала первой, называла девушке имя будущего мужа.

 (Гадаем) В кувшинах – написанные на листочках бумаги имена юношей и девушек. Происходит “гадание на имена”.

Pupil 2:  Now we’ve got a box and one more way to foretell your future. Put your hand into the box, find some symbol and we’ll tell you what it means.

• Веер – Вы откроете сердце человеку, которого любите.
• Лента – Вы хотите быть связанны с другим человеком.
• Кольцо – символ любви и верности.
• Кружево – Вы хотите поймать человека в свои сети.
• Красная варежка – Вас не любят.
• Роза – Вас любят всей душой.

Pupil 1. Now we’re at the end of our party. Remember the well-known proverb: Love will save the world. Now answer our questions:

1. What is love for you?
2. What is considered to be the main symbol of love?
3. Where can we find this symbol?
