Shakespeare: My
reverend audience! t’s my honor to invite you to the magical world of theatre!
I’m delighted to welcome you in this terrific assembly hall and I’m really
happy to open the annual week of Foreign Languages.
Sophie: This week has
become a tradition and the stage for performing talents, skills and knowledge
of students of different grades. Over and over again our gymnasium unites
everyone who studies here. The motto of our week is “all the world’s a stage
and all the men and women merely players”

Greek: I’m excited to
visit such Enlighted scholars! You know the first theatrical performances took
place in ancient Greece and I’m the first known actor Thespis. The first dramas
were performed by singing men in goatskins and were timed to Dionysius – great
religious festival.

In case of time the theatre has developed and changed greatly. Each century
brought us new dramatists, actors and directors. To comfort both audience and
actors the theatre buildings were constructed. Each country has its own symbol
of theatrical art. Meet some of them:
1) Shakespeare:
The Berlin State Opera
Was constructed by the
German architect George fon Knobelsdorf as the Royal Opera at the court of the
King Fridich II in 1743. Then it was the greatest theatre in Europe. The opera
was opened with the performance «Caesar and Cleopatra». Since 1842 the symphony
concerts have been performed on its stage. Such great musicians as F. Chaliapin,
R. Strauss and Russian Diaghilev Ballet company performed here. After thee
World war II Theatre was reconstructed.

2) Sophie:
The Liceo de Barcelona
The Theatre is rightly considered the
Opera center of Barcelona and the whole Spain. The greatest Treasure of the
Theatre is the glorious cast. Among them are Monserrat Cabalier, Placido
Domingo, Jose Carreras. In the winter of 1994 there was the terrible fire,
which destroyed the whole theatre building. M. Cabalier gave the concert on the
ruins of the theatre to say good bye to symbol of Spanish Music.

3) Shakespeare:
Grand Opera
Was constructed in 1785, and it was
named the Royal Music Academy. It was renamed as Grand Opera after the Republic
was set. The sensational novel «The Phantom of Opera» tells about the
underground lake in the theatre. It is true, moreover, you can find fish there.
All its performances have a box office success.

Sophie: Convent Garden
The Royal Opera House
London is recognized to be the
cultural center in Europe and the whole World. It’s cultural and theatrical
life is rich and diverse. On the 7th of December 1732 the Royal
Opera House started its work. Originally it was constructed as a drama theatre.
Two years later the first opera was staged there. And since then the audience
can enjoy musical and ballet performances there.

Shakespeare: The Bolshoi
Theatre
Is one of the main symbols of our
culture. 1776 is considered to be the year of foundation when Catherine the
Great gave her permission to Peter Urusov for the construction of the theatre
building. During The Napoleon’s invasion in 1812, the building was burnt. The
new building of the theatre was made by the architects O. Bovet and A. Mikhailov.
It has become one the greatest theatre buildings in the world. Now it is a
splendid eight- columned construction. Theatre-goers from all over the world
come here to enjoy immortal music by P. Tchaikovsky, S. Rachmaninov and other
great composers! The repertoire of the Bolshoy Theatre contains the greatest
works of the world Art.
