Christmas  Bells» poem by Henry Wadsworth

 I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till, ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The Carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said;
‘For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!’

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
‘God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!’

We wish you a Merry Christmas»

On the Christmas Eve there is a fuss in towns, everybody’s making preparations. Offices are closed at 1 o’clock, but shops are working. Postmen hurry to deliver millions of Christmas cards.

The prints about Christmas, which were popular in Medieval, are the prototypes of Christmas cards. In Europe was tradition to send letters with Christmas and New Years congratulations to relatives and friends. Sometimes there were drawings about Christmas. The other prototypes of Christmas cards were calling cards, which were sent to all significant addressees.  In 1848 Sir HENRY Coul ordered from the painter John Horsley unusual at that time Christmas congratulation- the picture on the cardboard which size was 12x7 sm. It had sign “Marry Christmas and Happy New Year”. This piece of cardboard was the first Christmas card.

We wish you a Merry Christmas»

But children as all children in the world play their favorite winter games! Christmas is the family event, all are gathering at one table, act the scene about Christ birth, play games, sing Christmas songs and tell dreadful stories

Sometimes ghosts can come to you. Imagine that in the height of the party there appears white, sinister, terrible ghost. It shocks the people and then…
Wait! Wait! What are you doing? We are at the festival. Come a little later! A good guy… Hes gone? Thanks God!

-Pussy cat, Pussy cat, where have you been?

-I’ve been to London to look at the Queen.

-Pussy cat, Pussy cat, what did you there?

-I saw a mouse under the chair.

Three little kittens they lost their mittens, and they began to cry,
"Oh mother dear, we sadly fear that we have lost our mittens."
"What! Lost your mittens, you naughty kittens!
Then you shall have no pie."
"Meeow, meeow, meeow, now we shall have no pie."
The three little kittens they found their mittens,
And they began to cry,
"Oh mother dear, see here, see here
For we have found our mittens."
"Put on your mittens, you silly kittens
And you shall have some pie"
"Meeow, meeow, meeow,
Now let us have some pie."
The three little kittens put on their mittens
And soon ate up the pie,
"Oh mother dear, we greatly fear
That we have soiled our mittens."
"What! soiled you mittens, you naughty kittens!"
Then they began to cry, "Meeow, meeow, meeow"
Then they began to sigh.
The three little kittens they washed their mittens
And hung them out to dry,
"Oh mother dear, do you not hear
That we have washed our mittens."
"What! washed your mittens, you are good kittens."
But I smell a rat close by,
"Meeow, meeow, meeow" we smell a rat close by...

Holy night»

Well, the main thing is that dutiful and loving children get the Christmas presents. They hang their little stockings at the fireplace. In the morning they find that the stockings are full of presents. They were sent by Santa. . The custom of hanging stockings on the mantel to be filled with treats and presents is said to have originated in Norway.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; Santa Claus (or St. Nicolas) was born in 4 century before our era in Turkey and was reborn in hearts and minds of children in the 19th century. His current residence is in the North Pole and his main occupation is to deliver gifts to good boys and girls on Christmas Eve. His favorite snacks are milk and cookies.

Daddy, will Santa Claus bring us presents?

Well, the spirit of Christmas comes to the houses with Santa Claus.

He slides down the chimneys to fill the children’s stockings…

Папа: …but only if…

Билл:…only if what?

Папа: only if they are good little children.

And if not?

He leaves a piece of coal.

And what about me? Have I been good?

Yes, you’re all good, kids.

Hooray!

So I’ll hang my stocking over the fireplace.

I’m sure your brothers may leave their stockings for Santa too.

Well children, Santa come if you’re asleep. And it’s time to go to bed.

But before that may I put some cookies out for Santa?

Джейн:…and some vegetables for his reindeer?

Do, please.

Now, go to bed, kids.

Jingle, bells!

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,

http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/bed2.bmp

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/shutters3.bmp

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

Звучит голос Санта Клауса за сценойhttp://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/window4.bmp

Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/santa5.bmp

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/santaandbag6.bmp

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.

http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/st.nick.bmp

Ho-ho-ho…It seems everybody is asleep. Ho-ho-ho…Oh, what a beautiful Christmas tree… Ho-ho-ho… The people in the family prepared the presents for each other. They also prepared vegetables and cookies for my reindeer and me. Thanks a lot. Ho-ho-ho.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/st.nickpresents7.bmp

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

Santa, wait! And what about our children?
http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/stockinggifts8.bmp

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

http://englishwithmom.ucoz.ru/lastpic9.bmp

Джейн: So do I.

Merry Christmas! I’ve cooked a Christmas pie. A big one.

And we’d like to congratulate all of you (указывает на зрителей) on Christmas.

Sitting under the mistletoe
(Pale-green, fairy mistletoe),
One last candle burning low,
All the sleepy dancers gone,
Just one candle burning on,
Shadows lurking everywhere:
Some one came, and kissed me there.

Tired I was; my head would go
Nodding under the mistletoe
(Pale-green, fairy mistletoe),
No footsteps came, no voice, but only,
Just as I sat there, sleepy, lonely,
Stooped in the still and shadowy air
Lips unseen—and kissed me there.

May this Christmas be filled

With happiness in all that you do

And may this joy continue

The whole year through

Wishing you a Merry Christmas
