Children do
know the story
Of the first Thanksgiving Day
Founded by our Pilgrim Fathers
In that time so far away?
They had given
for religion
Wealth and comfort-yes, and more-
Left their homes and friends and kindred,
For a bleak and barren shore
We shall never
know the terrors,
That they braved years ago,
But for all their struggles gave us,
We our gratitude can show.
And the
children of New England
If they feast or praise or pray
Should bless God for those brave Pilgrims,
And their first Thanksgiving Day.

Scene 1
Squanto: I’m greeting you,
Massasoit, the chief of the Wampanoag tribe. I wish you and your people lucky
hunting.
Massasoit: I’m greeting you,
Squanto, the best hunter in Plymouth Rock. I am glad to meet you. What’s the
news?
S.: I’ve come to say that
a big boat is approaching our land. I saw it today in the morning from the
rock. I have never seen it before. It is much bigger than our old oak tree on
the shore and it has a lot of people.
M.:How many?
M.: Do you think they are
enemies or friends? We have been living without war for a long time, and we dug
our Axe of War many years ago. Our women forgot how to cry and our men put
their weapon away. We don’t want blood and death.
S.: You say wise words,
Massasoit. However we are in a difficult position and we must get ready for
everything. Please, tell your fighting men to take tomahawks and hide in the
forest. When strangers come ashore I’ll ask them. If they are enemies, I’ll
give you a sign and raise my right hand.
M.: But my men can kill
you.
S.: I’ll try to be very
careful. It’s more important to prevent them from killing our people.
M.: Well, I wish you good
luck.
И,
Scene 2
1 man:
Thanks
God, We’ve arrived! Luckily for us we have survived in this cruel trip, having
lost a lot of our friends.
1
woman: This
is because of bad food and water we had on board a ship, and that’s why
terrible diseases carried away many pilgrims. God knows what is waiting for us
here.
1 m.: Nevertheless it is
good to be on the land again. I was looking forward to feeling the ground
beneath my feet.
2 m.: Well, we have to find a
safe place for all of us to live. Tomorrow we’ll search the wild countryside
and find where to build our settlement.
1 m.: Do you see that hill?
It seems nice. We have to do everything ourselves.
2 m.: Of course, it will take
us a long, long time to build a town here but it is a good place for it and a
good land for planting.
1 w.: But we haven’t got any
shelters yet.
1 m.: Don’t worry. We’ll
begin to cut down trees right now; otherwise we’ll be sleeping on the ship.
2 m.: Look! Somebody is
coming. He is red skinned. I have never seen such a man before.
Squanto: I am greeting you,
pale faced people. I am Squanto. I’ve come with peace and want the same
from you. Why did you arrive at my place called Plymouth Rock?
1 m.: Plymouth Rock? A nice
name! That is how we’ll call our town, Plymouth.
1 w.: We’ve come from England,
a far away country to begin a new life here. We won’t harm you. If it is your
land help us survive. Many of us died during the trip, some are still sick, we
have nothing to eat and we don’t have any weapon. Don’t be afraid of us but
help.
S.: How are you going to
live here? Winter is coming. You won’t finish building your homes before the
snow falls and won’t find enough food in the forest. You’ll be hungry, cold and
weak.
2 m.: We’ll work as hard as
we can.
S.: Don’t let your big
boat sail back to your country before summer. It may keep you from cold in
winter.
1 m.: There’s no way back for
us. We’ll
stay here.
Scene 3
1
m.: Hello, Squanto. What are we going to do today?
S.: I’ll take you to the
river and show how to catch fish.
2 m.: But you promised to
take us to the forest and show how to hunt deer and turkey.
S.: Yes, the turkey is very
tasty. It’s finger-licking good/ It lives deep in the forest and it is not easy
to catch.
1 m.: And what about wild
plants?
S.: You shouldn’t eat them
before I tell about each. Some of them are good to eat, some are good for
making medicine, and some are poisonous.
2 m.: Squanto, what are you
wearing around your neck?
S.: It’s popcorn.
2 m.: What?
S.: It is not just
decoration which we wear as beads around our necks when we dance. It’s eatable.
Taste it.
2 m.: Well it’s good. How do
you do this?
S.: You can put corn on hot
stones near the fire and in some time you’ll see it hopping about and bursting
with a popping noise. Corn turns into the white fluffy things. I’ll show you
how to plant corn. Now let’s go.
Scene 4
1 w.: Oh, thanks God, we have
gathered a rich harvest. Nobody will be hungry this winter.
2 w.: There is plenty of food
for our feast. Cucumbers, carrots, cabbages, turnips, radishes, onions and
beets.
1 w.: Our men hunted wild
turkeys, geese and ducks.
2 w.: When I saw Massasoit,
the chief of the Wampanoag tribe with his 90 companions, coming to our
settlement, I feared that the natives would eat our entire winter larder.
1 w.: Fortunately, Massasoit
realized the difficult situation and sent his hunters into the forest. They
returned with five deer and a lot of fish.
2 w.: But now there still
more Indians than Pilgrims at our feast.
1 w.: Right you are, but it
doesn’t matter. Thanksgiving is a time for eating and for sharing.
2 w.: I saw Captain Myles
entertain our guests and in turn Indians delighted our people demonstrating
their traditional dances.
1 m.: Well, we are all glad
to greet everybody at our Thanksgiving today. It is a remarkable day. We thank
our God for everything he gave us and I suggest that we should say our prayer
together.
A
Thanksgiving Prayer
Dear Lord, on
this Thanksgiving Day
With grateful hearts we bow and pray
For blessings given from our birth
Exceeding way beyond our worth
For friends
who’ve proven to be true;
For pets, which count as friendship too;
For home and country, health and love
All sent to us from Heaven above.
Lord, please,
continue to be near
And guide us through another year

mashed potato, cranberry sauce, squash, beans, nuts, corn, green vegetables,
lobsters, apple cider etc.)
1
We begin like this: I’m going to
Thanksgiving dinner and I’m taking a turkey.
The second
player repeats the sentence and adds…turkey and potato.
Choose the right
answer.
