  Mari El
  The Mari Autonomous Region was founded on 4 November 1920. In 1963 it was changed into the Mari ASSR and in 1990 – the Republic of Mari El. Mari El is located in the centre of the European part of Russia on the left bank of the river Volga. The total are is 23.2 thousand square km (0.1% of the total area of Russia). Our neighbours are Kirov region, Nizhny Novgorod, The Tatar republic, the Chuvash republic. The population is about 770 thousand inhabitants (0.5% of Russia total population). There are 4 towns in the republic: the capital city Yoshkar-Ola (260 thousand inhabitants), Volzhsk (59.0), Kozmodemyansk (22.8) and Zvenigovo (12.7). Mari El is an agricultural region. Agriculture is represented by cattle-breeding, graincrops, vegetables, potato, flax growing.

  “Mari Switzerland”
  Our republic lies almost on the plain, and that’s why “Stone Mountain” is a really unique place. There is also a natural reserve which is called “Mari Switzerland”.
  This reserve is founded in order to preserve the unique Mari El nature with its beautiful hills, landscapes with different quarries, tunnels and galleries and also for the preserving all Red Book plants. The height of the local hills which are like Swiss is 150 metres. One of the most famous springs is called “Stone Kluch” , besides there are a lot of small unknown springs having beautiful not ordinary names “Cold” or, “Kipunchic”, “Pashkin Kluch” and others.

  There is one more touch I’d like to tell you about the village “Vizimbir” if you want to see the flax processing, buy souvenirs and try Mari dishes or simply relax: go and see this fascinating place “Vizimbir”.
  How can we get to the “Stone Mountain” ?
  It is very easy. The main point is the village Russian Shoi Kuzhener region 4 km to the southwest and you can see a unique natural reserve.

  “Sea Eye”
  Sea Eye lake is located near the village of Shariboksad in the Volga region of Mari El. The lake was formed as a result of the karst failure more than 20 000 years ago during the Ice Age. Sea Eye is called so for the round shape and green colour of the lake. Green weed give such colour to the lake.
  The area is 0.29 hac, lake depth is 38.5 m, length is 50 m, width is 45 m, hardness – 0.1%, salinity -0.8%, transparency – up to 2 m.
  This lake is associated with many ancient legends.

  The legend
    In the old days on the lake there was a wedding procession. The groom with the bride were going along Morki road. When the wedding procession came back along the old forest road, people didn’t notice that the land had fallen in their way. The entire wedding procession went down to the depth of the lake which had appeared on a place of deep failure.
     So far, according to the legend, sometimes at night you can hear the soft sounds of lake wedding songs and ringing of the bells.

  The National Park “Mari Chodra”
  There are less and less places on our Planet such as green forests and fresh water, where a person has not been yet. No doubts, the number of wild animals is reducing dramatically.
  The unique system of national parks allows people to preserve the pristine nature, gives shelter to the wild animals and gives us the opportunity to save the beauty of the plant’s world. In December 1985, in the Mari Republic the State natural national Park “Mari Chodra” was created, which translated into Russian as a Mari forest.

  The National Park “Mari Chodra”
  All the area is covered with pine, coniferous and deciduous forests. The park is located in the south-east of our Republic on the territory of 3 regions – Morkinsky, Zvenigovsky and Volzhsky.
  The natural monuments in the park are: a spring called “Zelyony Kluch” and the lakes “Shungaltan”, “Kichier”, “Shutyer”. Almost all the lakes are of gapkarst origin. The territory of the park is a historical monument.

  Oak “Pugachev”
  The giant oak is located at the top of the Maple mountain. The legend says that it "remembers" how the country defender Yemelyan Pugachev had a rest there. The giant has widely stretched mighty "hands“. It is very tall and thick, the symbol of beauty and pride of the Russian forest. In 1969 "Pugachev's Oak" was announced a valuable historic forest object.

  The Sheremetevs’ Castle
  At the crossing of the ancient trade routes, in the place where the Vetluga and Volga start flowing together, there is a settlement Yurino. It will take you a few hours to get there by car from Yoshkar-Ola. If you come here you will have a look at the pearl of the former Russian Empire – the estate and the castle of the Sheremetyevs’ – the Russian counts. This place has a lot of secrets and legends. Walls, towers, balconies, terraces and balustrades, window frames, deified lined with red and black bricks, decorated with white columns and semi-columns, attracting attention with its original forms, technique and art.

  The Sheremetevs’ Castle
  When you are on the embankment of the Volga you can see the panoramic view of the estate which resembles a little fortress. It gives an impression of a harmonious ensemble where each detail is unique but at the same time it supplements all the other fragments. The second striking feature is its fundamental nature. The walls, the ceilings, the floors are so solid that we come to the conclusion that the representatives of this noble family expected to live here long and happily. There is even a legend that one step in the winding staircase has the healing power.

  Ethnographic museum in the open air
  The Ethnographic Museum in the open air in Kozmodemyansk was opened in summer 1983. This event was timed to the 400th anniversary of Kozmodemynsk. The total area of the Museum is more than 5 hectares. Coming into the yard through the gates you can see a house. The fore-house is used for living in winter and a store-house for living in summer. Under the house there is a cellar for storing vegetables.

  Ethnographic museum in the open air
  In front of the house there is a cottage for cooking meals. It’s a kind of a summer kitchen. Further you can see a shed for cattle. A bee garden is very popular with tourists. Drinking tea with honey is very popular and a part of fun. The museum is proud of the mill with 4 wings moving due to the wind. There are also 3 wells on the territory of the museum. The museum is worth visiting.

  Mountain Alamner
  Alamner Mountain is located in the Republic of Mari El in Gornomariysky District. From the 11th to the 15th century there was the first settlement, and then a fortified settlement, which served as a cultural, political and commercial center of the region, and also the main historical place at the top of the hill .

  Nowadays festivals are held at the site of the ancient settlement, sheltered by birch grove from prying eyes. Here you can find a medieval camp. The whole situation corresponded to historical reality of IX-XI centuries, beginning with weapons and ending with tents and utensils.

  The legend
  On the bank of the river Sundyrki, near the mountain Alamner, which is not so far from the village of Little Sundyr, still preserved place of Mari fortress. It had been built even before the Russian captured Kazan kingdom. According to the ancient legend, there once was a city Salym. In this city in 1551 Prince Paletskiy was defeated, coming down with his army on numerous boats on Kazan. Maris in that place flooded the Volga trees and stones, so Prince’s boats, faced to them, fell apart, and the soldiers were killed by arrows flying from the shore like rain, and by logs rolling like boulders. In that place many thousands of people were killed. Probably, such a terrible battle gave birth to the saying: "On the one hand cheremisy, and on the other - the banks." But soon after this shameful defeat, the fortress and the city Salym were burnt by the detachment of soldiers under the command of Boyar Morozov.

  In conclusion we want to say that Mari El is famous for a lot of wonders. We visited many marvelous places that’s why we could widen our cultural horizons.
  It’s interesting to know that the distance of our trip is 802.8 km.
  We think you agree with us that every object on our planet has its own features. We must protect our environment because nature is a little part of our soul and the condition of the nature depends on people’s attitude.

  My name is Dmitry Smirnov 11B form. I am fond of sports and computers. I take an active part in military-patriotic club «Grom».
  Our group of girls: Ksenya, Kate and two Tatianas. They are really great. They are good at studying English, singing, dancing. Our beautiful girls have won cups and prizes many times in different competitions.
