1. ANCIENT MECHANICAL PUPPETS AS ROBOTS

Japan's first robot (i.e., automatic device) was invented many centuries ago. In a collection of stories written in the early 12th century, called Konjaku Monogatari Shu, we can read about a device made by Kaya-no-Miko. The device poured water into paddy fields during dry periods of the year. Actually, this "robot" did not do the pumping -peasants would pour water into its bowl, and when the bowl reached a certain weight the "robot" would move, tipping the water into the field. This mechanical fellow provided an opportunity for peasants to have fun competing with each other while irrigating their fields.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, robot-like puppets called karakuri-ningyo developed to a remarkably high technological level, all for the sake of amuse­ment.

These "robots" also performed on floats during folk festivals. Even today, you can see them at the Takayama Festival in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. It is interesting to note here that, according to an old superstition, the puppets moved because a god or spirit had entered them, and this human-like move­ment showed that they were even more quick-witted than people were.

The first true robot was developed in Japan in 1927, using Western tech­nology. He could smile, flutter his eyes, and write. His name was Gautensoku, which means, "learning from divine reason". Here, too, we see how robots were thought to have a superhuman potential for quick thinking.

*In Reported statement the verb form moves one tense back.

The Past Simple and the Present Perfect both change to the Past Perfect.

*ln Reported questions the word order is not the same as in Direct questions.

"What are you doing?" He asked me what I was doing.

*ln Reported questions the rule is also one tense back. If there is no question word, "IF" is used in general questions.

A balloon flies because the widely separated molecules of a thin gas such as hydrogen or helium, or of the heated air that expands inside the bag, are less dense and thus lighter than those of the air outside the bag. In attempting to rise or escape from its confinement, the buoyant lightweight gas or heated air lifts the balloon along with it.

Normally, when something soars skyward, it does so by virtue of its aero­dynamic design. Like an airplane, it is lifted by the effect of outside forces, usually wind, upon its surface. It does not soar because it is lighter than the surrounding atmosphere. Even a feature in the breeze is an aerodynamic form. It flies solely by the force of air currents playing upon it. If the breeze stops, the feather slowly floats to earth.

On the other hand, a balloon's buoyancy is static, not dependent on a dynamic force such as wind or motor. A balloon rises because it is filled with gas or heated air that is thinner in density and thus lighter in weight than the surrounding atmosphere.

Because of this static, or self-sustaining lift, a balloon is sometimes called an aerostat, and the science of ballooning, aerostation. Balloonists also may be called aeronauts, from the Greek words aero (of the air) and nautes (sailor).

Who Invented Television?

A Scotsman, John Baird, invented the first TV in 1926, but his system could not broadcast1 sound and image at the same time. To get around this problem, he first showed a televised 2 picture of Gracie Fields, a famous singer, and then he played her voice 3 without the image. Baird also demonstrated the first colour television in Britain in 1928. But it was Vladimir Zworykin, a Russian engineer living in the United States, who invented modern television technology. The Development of Television

Television was not really invented. Many scientists invented or improved parts of the system that have become the television systems we know now. Radio, of course, was necessary before television could be developed, be­cause television uses the same principles of electromagnetic waves that radio does. As soon as radio became possible in the 1800s, the possibility of televi­sion transmission was also known, but it took many years for it to become practical.

British and American scientists helped to develop the basic ideas that made television possible, but it was a Russian who made the first practical televi­sion system. By 1923, Vladimir Zworykin, a Russian, had invented a camera tube that could turn pictures into electric energy. By 1929, Zworykin had built a television system that worked.

By 1935, regular television broadcasts were begun in Germany. The first broadcasts in the United States began in 1939, but television did not really become popular until after the Second World War. Between 1945 and 1955 there was rapid growth in the practical use of television.

All early television was broadcasted in black and white. Color television was possible, but it was too expensive and of very poor quality until the middle of the 1950s. Color television broadcasts began in the United States in 1954, in Japan in 1960, and in Europe in 1967.

Birth of the Moon by Heather Couper and Nigel Henbest

The Solar System was born about 4,600 million years ago, as a swirling disc of gas and dust called a nebula. The big central "hub" became the Sun, while the outer regions of the disc condensed into the nine planets.

The oldest rock that the Apollo astronauts brought back was 4,600 million years old, so the Moon undoubtedly came into being at the same time as the Earth. According to one theory, the Moon was once part of the Earth, and split off because the Earth was rotating so rapidly. But the Apollo rock samples are rather different from the rock of the Earth's surface, so most astrono­mers have abandoned this idea.

The moons orbiting the other planets probably formed from swirling nebu­lae going around each planet like miniature Solar Systems. But in this case the Earth should have a family of moons, like those of Jupiter, not just one Moon. In addition its orbits should not be tilted up, and the theory doesn't explain why the Moon's composition is different from the Earth's.

Other astronomers have suggested that the Moon formed as a planet in its own right, and that the Earth "captured" it when the Moon approached too closely. But it is difficult to explain how this capture occurred.

The latest theory explain the fact that the Moon's rocks are slightly different from the Earth's by the idea that a giant meteorite hit the Earth, and splashed out matter that later condensed into the Moon. In the process, some elements evaporated into space, so changing the composition of the Moon's rocks.

Summer Holidays

You are back in school for a new year, ready to work in classrooms, laboratories and workshops. But you are still thinking about the summer that has gone. Do you remember how many times you have talked about summer holidays?

"Oh, very many," you think, "but there is always something new to tell your classmates and to hear from them."

You are right, of course, because every year the summer holidays are different. Three years ago, for example, you went to the seaside with your parents. A year later you were glad to go to a summer camp and last year the greater part of your holidays was spent in the country.

When you come back to school in September, you are interested to learn from other boys and girls how they spent their summer holidays. Each school student may have his own story to tell about his work on a farm, about an interesting trip, about life in a summer camp or sport camp or in the country.

All holidays are wonderful because they are different from everyday life. That is why, when holidays are over and we are back in school, like now, we get a lot of pleasure out of speaking about them. Don't you think so?

Some boys and girls may say that the» holidays were too short, but let us hope that next summer they will be able to do everything they had no time for this summer.

Carlson's Invention

When we think of inventions or developments that have improved the communication of information, most of us think of things such as the tele­phone, the radio, the telegraph, and the television. But there is one invention that has affected communication almost as much as those inventions that communicate voices and pictures. It is a invention that improved the communication of written or printed information. Can you guess what that invention is?

First, a clue to help you. Printing, or making copies of writing by machine, was invented in the 1400s, both in Korea and in Europe. Before that time, if people wanted copies of a written document, they had to write it out by them­selves or pay another writer to make the copy. Making copies was, therefore, very slow and very expensive, and it was always possible that the copy would not be a perfect one. It might have mistakes that made it different from the original.

After printing was invented, it became possible to make many copies of a written document, and every copy was the same. Written and printed infor­mation became very easily available. But the process of printing a document easily available. But the process of printing a document is always complex and often expensive. It was too complex and too expen­sive to be used to make quick copies of short documents such as letters or pages of books.

In 1938, a man named Chester Carlson invented a machine that could make single copies of written documents cheaply and quickly. Since that time, his invention has spread throughout the world and has almost replaced printing in some places as a way of making copies of a single written document. Have you guessed what that invention is?

You may have guessed the invention, but you may not know exactly what its name is. The invention has xerography, or the making of copies by a dry, mechanical process. The process is more commonly known now as photo­copying, although it does not involve making a photograph.

8. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up.

9. Environmental protec­tion is a universal concern. 10. That is why serious measures to create a system of ecological security should be taken.

11. Some progress has been already made in this direction. 12. As many as 159 countries - members of the UNO - have set up envi­ronmental protection agen­cies.

13. Numerous confer­ences have been held by these agencies to discuss questions of ecologically poor regions including the Aral Sea, Semipalatinsk . 14. An interna­tional environmental re­search centre has been set up on Lake Baikal. 15. The international organization Greenpeace is also doing much to preserve the envi­ronment.

I. The Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world. The former sea
bed is now a salt desert. It was once the home to 24 species of fish. More and
more water is used for irrigations and this may cause a reduction of water
pouring into the Aral Sea. As the result of the shrinkage of the Sea a lot of
fishermen lost their jobs.

II. The dying Aral Sea is one of the world's environmental disasters. The
environment around the lake and health of the people have been damaged.

Ecology Is a Great Problem

The earth is our home. We must take care of it for ourselves and for the future generations.

The importance 2 of this task is great as scientists who study the relation3 of man to nature say. These scientists are called "ecologists", from the Greek word "oikos", which means home. Ecologists are trying to keep the land, air and water clean.

Why must we keep our earth clean?

We have only a certain amount 4 of fresh water and clean air and we must take care of it. If we don't stop air and water pollutions 5, trees and flowers won't grow, fish will die in dirty water. We will have to breathe 6 dirty air.

Of course, people are working to make the earth cleaner, but they must do more. What can people do to make earth cleaner? Factories must stop polluting 7 air, rivers and lakes with waste products8 and chemicals. They must work on it more. Lakes and rivers must be cleaned and kept clean.

Environmental problems concern everyone. We should remember that everyone can do something to solve them. We all want to live in a clean world.

Climate Change

The Earth is warmed naturally by gases in the atmosphere trapping heat from the Sun. The Earth's climate has changed considerably in the past.

  • An increase in global temperature could lead to major problems for man­kind;

  • Sea levels could rise, flooding low-lying coasts;

  • Different weather patterns could affect agriculture and food production;

  • and forced migrations of people could affect peace and international security.

Britain is taking steps to cut emissions of other greenhouse gases. For ex­ample, the Government is encouraging schemes to use methane from rubbish tips for energy; this gas would otherwise simply seep out into the atmosphere. Using this gas productively will also reduce dependence upon fossil fuels.

However, because the problem is global in scope, it is important that the different countries of the world take measures to control greenhouse gases together. Britain is one of the active members.

Deforestation can also contribute to the build up of greenhouses gas in the air. Britain supports many tree - planting projects at home to promote good forest management elsewhere in the world.

Kazakhstan supports many tree — planting projects at home to promote good forest management. For example, "Zhasyl el" movement.

Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbaev, The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan supports greatly a tree planting project around Astana. A lot of trees have been already planted. As the result of this Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan has become a green city

Ecology of Kazakhstan.

Man is a part of nature. This is why his attitude to nature underlies his attitude to himself.

Looking around you –what do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? If you live in city, you probably see many people. You hear the noise of traffic and you smell the pollution from cars and factories.

Pollution spoils our environment in many ways.

Our experience of using nature revealed many “unforeseen effect”. For example large scale irrigation schemes in Central Asia, greatly increased cotton output . but these irrigation system led to salinization and water logging of old irrigated lands and enormous expenditures on salinity control and drainage.

The technologically backward watering method let to an excessive water intake from Amudarya and Surdarya rivers. We faced with many ecological catastrophes both at home and abroad. The tragedy of the Aral Sea, the problem of Lake Baikal, the Chernobyl accident. No fine could compensate for the damage inflicted on the natural environment. It is vital to preserve the water, the soil and all species of living beings.

The main tasks are to preserve and to continue life on Earth. There is no more time to reflect. It is time to act.

Britain is protecting the environment on land in many ways for example by encouraging wildlife conservation and good forestry. It supports international agreements to protect wildlife and their habitats.

Hazardous wastes can also pose major environment problems, since many developing countries do not have the technical capabilities to cope prop­erly with these wastes. Britain is helping such countries to deal with hazard­ous waste. For example, in 1998 it sent three experts to Nigeria to help assess a toxic waste dump, and supplied protective clothing to help the local authori­ties to clean the area up. Britain believes that all developed countries should become self sufficient in disposing of their own waste.

The world's tropical forests are being destroyed at a rapid rate. Defores­tation can have a serious effect on the local and global environment in several ways, including:

Putting back large amounts of C02 into the atmosphere when forests are burned;

Affecting watersheds and increasing the chance of major floods;

Affecting the lifestyle of forest peoples;

Destroying habitats for forest species of plants and animals; and allowing the topsoil to be eroded.

Timber is an important source of export earnings for many developing countries, but it is important that their forests are managed in a sustainable way. Britain is therefore increasing the amount of support it gives to tropical forestry.

Britain protects the seas around its coasts from pollution.

The series of North Sea Conferences is an environmental forum for the nations which border onto the North Sea. Each meeting agrees steps further to protect the North Sea. The third meeting of the Conference took place in March 1990. There Britain announced several new initiatives to reduce in­puts into the sea.

Sea dumping of waste and pollution are carried out in accordance with international agreements. Those relating directly to operational discharges from shipping are drawn up under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a UN agency based in London. The requirements of such agreements are incorporated into British law.

Oil Pollution

Control marine pollution lays down very strict discharge standards for oil. It obliges tanker ships to keep dirty ballast residues aboard in a separate tank for discharge at special port facilities. These requirements are incorporated into British law. All ships in British waters must obey these laws.

Britain is also taking measures to protect the North Sea from pollution from the offshore oil industry.

In order to deal with pollution incidents in British waters, the Marine, Pol­lution Control Unit operates special aircrafts. Seven planes are fitted to spray dispersants and two other planes are used to detect oil slicks at sea. They also fly regular patrols over British shipping lanes and offshore oil platforms to detect and deter illegal discharges.

The British Parliament and Her Majesty's Government

The Queen

Until the seventeenth century, kings and queens of England had enormous political power. But now the Queen is the only Head of State in a ceremonial sense. She signs new laws and sees the Prime Minister every week, but has no direct political influence.

One of her most important official functions is the State Opening of Par­liament. In this traditional ceremony, the Queen rides in a gold coach from Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament. There she opens the new session of Parliament each year and reads a speech. But the Queen doesn't write the speech. It's written by the government ministers and only it's read aloud by her.

Parliament

Britain's Parliament is divided into two houses. Both of these are in the Palace of Westminister in London. The House of Commons is for elected members of Parliament. The House of Lords is for non-elected members.

The House of Commons

Every five years in Britain, there is a general election. Voters choose members of Parliament (or MPs as they're known) from local areas. On average, there are between 600-700 MP's in Westminister. The Commons debates new laws. These 'bills', as they're called, don't become laws or 'acts' until the House of Lords and the Queen have accepted them. In theory, the House of Lords can refuse to pass a bill, but in practice this hardly ever happens.

The British Constitution

The UK does not have a written constitution. This doesn't mean, how­ever, that Britain does not have a formal and controlled system of govern­ment.

Citizens' rights are made up from a combination of: common law, statutes, conventions

The Constitution has three branches:

Legislature - Parliament which consists of Her Majesty (HM) the Queen, the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Executive - The Government: Prime Minister, Cabinet ministers, junior ministers.

Judiciary - the legal system of courts, judges and lawyers.

In short, Parliament makes laws: the government executes laws, i.e. puts them into effect: law courts interpret laws.

Her Majesty the Queen is the head of all three branches: head of the executive, head of the judiciary and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Today the monarch's po­litical role is largely ceremonial, with the Queen acting on the advice of her ministers.

The Constitution

The Constitution of the United States is the central instrument of Ameri­can government and the supreme law of the land.   1. The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan shall be the head of state.

  1. The President of the Republic shall be elected by universal, equal and direct suffrage under a secret ballot for a seven-year term in accordance with the Constitutional Law by the citizens of the Republic who have come of age.

  2. A citizen of the Republic shall be eligible for the office of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan if he is by birth not younger than forty and has a perfect command of the state language and has lived in Kazakhstan for not less than fifteen years.

  3. Regular elections of the President of the Republic shall be held on the first Sunday of December and shall not coincide with the election of a new Parliament of the Republic.

  4. The candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the votes of the constituents that took part in the election shall be deemed elected. If none of the candidates receives above mentioned the numbers of votes, a second round of elections shall be held between the two candidates who obtained largest number of votes. The candidate who receives the larger number of votes of the constituents who takes part in the second round of elections shall be deemed elected.

Making New Laws:

The functions of Parliament are: making laws, providing money for the government through taxation; examining government policy, administration and spending; debating political questions.

Every year Parliament passes about a hundred laws directly, by making Acts of Parliament. Because this can be a long process, Parliament some­times passes a very general law and leaves a minister to fill in the details. In this way, it indirectly passes about 2,000 additional rules and regulations.

No new law can be passed unless it has completed a number of stages in the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The monarch also has to give a Bill the Royal Assent, which is now just a formality! Since 1707 no sovereign has refused a Bill.

THE PARTY SYSTEM

For over 150 years Britain's system of parliamentary democracy has been based on organized political parties competing to form governments. The sys­tem depends on the existence of at least two parties in the House of Com­mons, each of which is capable of forming a government. Any organization wishing to put up candidates at a relevant election must be registered as a political party with the Electoral Commission. Voting is by secret ballot.

Most candidates in elections and almost all winning candidates belong to one or other of main political parties. Candidates who are members of smaller political parties, or who do not belong to any party, may also stand. Since the Second World War the great majority of MPs have belonged to either the Conservative or the Labour party.

The leader of the party that wins most seats at a general election is by convention invited by the Monarch to form a government. He or she be­comes Prime Minister and chooses the ministers who will together form the Government.

A. Hippies

In the 1960s and 1970s a hippy was a person who opposed the normal standards of society. Hippies wore unusual clothes. Girls, for example, often wore Indian-style silk dresses and both men and women usually had long hair. They lived in groups together, often in quiet places in the countryside. Hippies believed in peace. A lot of hippies in the US and Europe went on marches to protest against the Vietnam War. When the hippy movement started in the US, especially in California, young people showed their peaceful feelings by wearing flowers in their hair. For this reason, they were also called flower people or flower children. Hippies listened to rock music. They enjoyed the songs of Bob Dylan and it was at this time that the Beatles wrote songs like 'Give Peace a Chance' and 'All You Need is Love'.

B. Punks

In the mid 1970s, times were hard. Unemployment was growing higher and higher, especially amongst the young , and many teenagers felt that soci­ety was to blame. A youth culture started up which expressed these negative feelings — punk. Punk rock tried to shock people, while the hippies were talking about love and peace, punks were full of hate.

They thought normal pop music was boring and listened to bands like the Sex Pistols. Punks chose clothes that their parents hated. They wore ripped T — shirts, Doc Marten boots and leather jackets, and often had brightly coloured spiked hair.

Yuppies - An American Stereotype

The word yuppies, young urban professionals, brings to mind two earlier stereotypes - hippies and preppies. Hippies were those young people in the 1960s who believed in love, peace, and spiritual things rather than material things. Preppies are children from rich, influential families who go to exclu­sive preparatory (prep) schools. These groups are alike in some ways and very different in other ways.

Yuppies, preppies, and hippies have many of the same characteristics. One characteristic of all three groups is youth - members are usually under thirty years old. Yuppies and hippies share another characteristic - a belief in freedom and human potential.

Both groups are also fascinated with the self. Yuppies and preppies share characteristics, too. Both believe that money, power, and profession is more important than anything else in life. Both yuppies and preppies love competi­tion and enjoy the game of keeping up with the Joneses.

There are also important differences among hippies, preppies, and yuppies,, Hippies believed that property was for everyone to share; yuppies believe property is for investment - money should earn more money. Hippies be­lieved in spiritual things; yuppies believe in material things. As for yuppies and preppies, yuppies believe that anyone who works hard can earn money and have the better things in life - nicer clothes, faster cars, etc. Preppies, how­ever, get their money and often their possessions from their families rather than from hard work. They prefer to save the money they earn and leave it for their children and grandchildren.

Get into pairs, one student from Group A, the other student from Group B. Ask the following questions about the texts.

In Britain, marriage is a relationship where a man and woman make a legal agreement to live together.

The agreement can be religious (such as in church) or in a civil ceremony. Today only 50% of people get married in church. Young people under sixteen can't get married. When you are sixteen and seventeen your parents must agree. The number of teenage weddings is dropping. Only 28% of brides and 11% of bridegrooms are under 21. 32% of brides and 33% of grooms are aged 21-24.

Medical wonders

Surgeons have been performing operations for hundreds of years. The first successful appendix operation was in 1736, a painful operation with­out anesthetics. Doctors have been using anesthetics since 1842. Queen Victoria was some of the first women to give birth with the help of anesthetics.

Today surgeons perform amazing operations. In 1967, in South Africa, Dr. Christian Barnard performed the first heart transplant. Since then thousands of people have received new hearts People who can't have children have also received help from medical science. In 1978 the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, was born. Since then over 4000 couples had babies using this technique.

Now there is even an operation that can help people who are short-sighted, people who have had the operation in Moscow can now see better. The operation is available in other countries.

New eye surgery using lasers could be even more important in the future. Spectacles, or glasses, have been with us for about 500 years and people have been wearing contact lenses since the nineteenth century. Because of the new operations, eye surgeon Mr. William Jory thinks that in the year 2050 nobody will need glasses.

Exercise 4 You are going to read a text about first-aid treatment which can save lives. Before reading study the following words.

First Aid

First aid is very important. A little knowledge of first aid is a dangerous thing. An ordinary person can take a first aid class and learn what to do until the patient receives professional help. This might mean helping someone until an ambulance comes. When you give first aid, you breathe directly into the patients mouth. Then you press on the heart in the centre of the chest. You continue alternating these two actions. At the place of a car accident there are three things you should do. First of all you should check if the victims are breathing. If they are not, give them artificial respiration. The most common inju­ries in car accidents are fractures and bleeding, so the second thing is to stop the bleeding. Thirdly, it's very important not to move the victim unless it's absolutely necessary. If bones are broken, the in­jury could be muchjkvorse by moving the victim. You should keep them warm, loosen any tight cloth-ing and try to reassure them. They'll probably be suffering from shock, so just stay with them until expert help arrives.

Whet you should do about burns. If it is a minor burn, the best thing to do is put burnt area under the cold tap or slowly pour on iced water. If it's a bad burn, don't touch it, you really should get for this kind of burn expert immediately. Cover the burn very lightly with something clean like a sheet or a handkerchief and then go straight to a hospital.
