O.Henry﴿
Leading 1:
O.Henry ﴾1862-1910﴿, whose real name was William Sidney
Porter, is a well-known American short-story writer. He had to earn his living
from the age of fifteen and he educated himself with the help of friends. He
tried his hand at several jobs before he became a short story writer.
Leading 2:
O.Henry knew people very well, especially the ordinary
people of New York. O.Henry’s stories have much truth and reality. In his
stories you can feel satirical criticism of the American way of life. Most of
his short stories are full of warm sympathy for ordinary American people.

Part I. ﴾Music﴿
Author : Sue
and Johnsy were poor artists. They lived in a street where many art people
lived. The girls had a studio at the top of a three-story brick house.
They became friends in May and decided to live
together. In November Johnsy feel ill: it was pneumonia. Johnsy lay in bed and
looked through the window at the brick wall of the next house.

Leading 1:
Part II.
Author : One
morning, the doctor asked Sue to come.
﴾
Knock ﴿
Doctor:-Yes.
Sue:-May I come in ?
Good day, Mr.Paul.
Doctor:
-Oh, Sue. Good day, come in, please. Sue, your friend
is very ill, she has one chance in ten. And that chance is for her to want to
live. The little lady thinks that she cannot get well. I promise to do all that
I can. You must help me. Make her think not of her illness but of some other
things.
Sue:-Yes, Mr.Paul.
I’ll think about it. Thank you. Good bye, doctor.
Doctor:-Good bye, Sue.
Leading 2:
Part III.
﴾Music﴿
Author:Sue came back into
Johnsy’s room. Johnsy lay with her face towards the window. Sue thought that
she was asleep and began to draw pictures for a magazine story. Suddenly she
heard a low sound.
Johnsy:-Twelve, eleven,
ten….
Sue:-What is Johnsy
counting? ﴾Sue
looked out of the window.﴿
Johnsy:-Nine, eight,
seven….
Sue:-What is it, dear
?
Johnsy:-Six. Three days
ago there were almost a hundred. There goes another one. There are only five
now.
Sue:-Five what, dear ?
Tell me.
Johnsy:-Leaves. When the
last leaf falls I must go too. I’ve known that for three days. Didn’t the
doctor tell you ?
Sue:-Oh, I never heard
of such nonsense. What have old tree to do with your illness ? Don’t be silly.
Try to take some soup now and let me draw my pictures.
Johnsy:-No, I don’t want
any soup. There are four leaves now. I want to see the last one fall before it
gets dark. Then I’ll go, too.
Sue:-Johnsy, dear,
will you promise me to keep your eyes shut, and not to look out of the window
until I finish working ? I need the light.
Johnsy:-Can you draw in
the other room ?
Sue:-I want to be near
you.
Johnsy:-I am tired of
waiting, I am tired of thinking. Tell me as soon as you have finished. Because
I want to see the last one fall.
Sue:-Try to sleep. I
must call Behrman, I want to ask him to pose for me.
Leading 1:Part
IV.
﴾Music﴿
Author:Old Behrman was an
artist too. He lived on the ground floor in the same house. He was over sixty.
Sue found Behrman in his little room. She told him about Johnsy’s illness.
Sue:-My friend is very
ill and weak. She thinks that she must die when the last leaf falls from the
tree.
﴾Music﴿
Author:They went
upstairs. Johnsy was asleep. Sue drew the curtain down and invited Behrman.
They looked out of the window. They looked at the tree. Then they looked at
each other for a moment but said nothing. It was a cold autumn night, a cold
rain began to fall.
﴾Sound of thunder, lightning and rain﴿
Leading 2:
Part V.
Johnsy:Please, Sue. Draw
the curtain up. I want to see.
Author:After the heavy
rain and the strong wind that blew all night long there was still one leaf on
the tree.
Johnsy:-It is the last
leaf. It must fall to-day and I must die at the same time.
Sue:-Dear, dear !
Think of me, if you don’t want to think of yourself. What would I do?
﴾Sound of thunder, lightning and rain﴿
Author:The day passed and
even in the evening they could see one leaf on the tree.At night the weather
was bad again, a cold wind blew again, and it rained. In the morning the girls
looked out of the window. The leaf was still there.
Johnsy:-I was a bad girl,
because I wanted to die, Sue. You may bring me a little soup now and some milk.
But first bring me a mirror and help me to sit up. I want to watch you cook.
Sue:-Oh, my dear. You
are clever. Just a minute. I’ll cook you soup and milk.
Johnsy:-Sue, some day I
hope to paint a beautiful picture.
Sue:-Yes, I remember.
You’ll paint the best picture in the world. I’ll hope it and You must belive
me.
Author:The doctor came in
the afternoon.
Doctor:-She is much
better now, she is getting well. She’s out of danger. You have won. Good food
and care now-that’s all.
Leading 1:
I want to
live
And not to
die
I want to
laugh
And not to cry
Leading 2:
I
want to fly
into
the blue
I
want to swim
as fishes do
Leading 1:
I want to
feel
The summer
sun
I want to
sing
When life is fun
Leading 2:

Author: Friendship is a
great thing.
-A friend is someone who always gives you help, when
you need it.
-A friend is someone who understand you, you can
trust, you can rely on, you can share, you can talk, you like, you love and who
cares for you.
-And we must believe in future.
