Beginning:

-Good morning, children. I’m very glad to see you. How are you?
I’m fine too. Thank you.
Sit down, please. And let’s begin our lesson.

Who is on duty today?

Who is absent?

Warm up “Brainstorming”

-          Children, look at the poster and try to guess the theme of our lesson today. And the words under this poster will help to you.

-          You are right. You see the maps of New Zealand, Canada, Australia, the UK, the USA and the flags of these countries. And what language do people speak in these countries?

-          You are right. They speak English.

-          And the theme of our lesson is “English-speaking countries”

PPT: 1st slide – map

Middle

-          So, today you will learn about the geographical situation of these countries, their capitals, population, official languages, some symbols and some interesting facts.

Dividing into groups

-          I suggest you to play a game “Puzzles”. You should collect these puzzles into one picture and make a group according your country.

Cloud of words

-          In the next task you should find the meanings of these transcription with help of “Cloud of words”. Mind the pronunciation of new words, try to translate them

Emblem, powerful, north, Canberra, Wellington, south, east, financial, island, to occupy, a maple leaf, to stretch, official

Group work with the text about different countries

- And  I suggest you to read a new information and you‘ll share information with your classmates who have read the texts about other English-speaking countries. Use the Questions as a plan.

1.      Where is it situated?

2.      What’s its capital?

3.      What’s its population?

4.      What’s its official language (or languages)?

5.      What’s its official emblem?

6.      Another name of the country?

-          But at first, you should divide roles in your group:

One of you may be a speaker

One of you may be a secretary

One of you may be a researcher

-          When one group will show for us your poster, the other groups should assess their work through “2 stars, 1 wishes”

         The first group in Canada.

Hi! I’m from Canada, the second largest country in the world. It’s nearly as big as all of Europe. My country shares with the USA seven of the world’s largest lakes and also has three of the world’s longest 20 rivers.

The capital of Canada is Ottawa. In Canada there are people of many nationalities. There are two official languages in my country, English and French. English spoken in Canada is a bit different from British English: there are some pronunciation and grammatical differences.

The red and white Canadian flag shows a leaf of the maple tree, which grows in North America. The maple leaf is the official emblem of Canada. You can often see it on the back of our famous hockey players.

          2nd group “Australians”:

My country is the biggest island and the smallest continent in the world. Of course, you’ve guessed, it’s Australia. Australia is the only country in the world which occupies a whole continent and some islands around it. It lies between the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. It’s a large country, but its population is only 18,3 million people. There are “original Australians” who lived here long ago but most of population came to Australia from Britain, Ireland and other countries years ago. At present in Australia there are a lot of people from Russia.

The capital of Australia is Canberra.

English is the official language in Australia. But English spoken in Australia is a bit different from British English and American English.

Sometimes Australia is called “Oz” or “the Lucky Country”.

          3rd group “New Zealand”:

We are from the small and quiet country in the Pacific Ocean. Our country consists of two main islands. It’s New Zealand. Our country looks like Italy upside down. New Zealand is the same distance from Australia as London is from Moscow. When it’s summer in Europe, it’s winter in New Zealand. But the school year still starts in autumn – in February! When it’s time to go to bed in Europe, it’s time to go to work in my country.

The capital of New Zealand is Wellington. The population of my country is mixed. Some people came from Britain years ago. Some Maori people lived here before the British came. Our official languages are English and Maori. But English is spoken in very unusual way in New Zealand. It is often called Kiwi English.

New Zealand is sometimes called “The Worlds Biggest Farm”. It is famous for its products: butter, cheese, meat.

Dividing into pairs

-          Now, please, make a line of you according your eyes: from light to dark.

Fill in the gaps

-          It’s time to find out what you know about English-speaking countries. Now I’ll give you cards and you should fill in the gaps in the table.

         The first group in Canada.

    4th group “USA”:

I’m from the USA or the United States of America. It’s one of the most powerful and advanced countries in the world. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and from Canada in the north to Mexico in the south. The capital of the USA is Washington, though some people i think it’s New York. This famous city is the financial and cultural center of the USA.

The USA has the third largest population in the world. It’s a real melting pot. English is the official language in the USA. But the English language spoken in my country is known as American English.

There are some differences between British and American English. For example a film in Britain is a movie in America, a postman is a mailman, the underground is the subway. But people speaking British English can be easily understood in the US. No problem! The second important language in the United States is Spanish.

My country’s motto is “In God We Trust”.
