The origin of
emoticons and abbreviations.
Modern spoken and
written language is changing rapidly. Now without a special vocabulary and
minimum knowledge of slang it is impossible to make out an elementary
SMS-message. The letters are replaced by numbers; the mood is expressed with emoticons,
Latin to Cyrillic changes and vice versa. SMS culture is a part of a written
culture, where there is a rule "I say and write as I hear."
But most of the
reductions in the SMS-messages are rather forced than intentional.
Just
recently we have read a survey on the Internet on the theme «SMS-slang in youth
fellowship", after our reading we can conclude that today's youth cannot imagine
their lives without mobile phones, SMS correspondence, and, consequently, with
no cuts in SMS messages. Most of them use the same "emoticons" and
reductions. It means that today's young people can easily understand each
other. They can even communicate in SMS slang with a stranger.
Each of us
has a cell phone. We talk a lot, we often write SMS messages in WhatsApp or
Viber, etc. So, we looked into our phones, just into the section of SMS messages
and we were surprised at the following pictures: an incredible array of
acronyms! We often cut steel words. All our communication has become one word!
Let's just say, I was congratulated on my birthday and a good friend of mine
wrote to me, "HB" instead of “Happy Birthday”. That is so my friend
appreciates our friendship, only 2 letters. Think about it, because now instead
of “СПАСИБО” we write in
short «СПС». And “SPASIBO”
is already a reduction!
Nowadays,
all Smartphone users have a separate keyboard with smiley pictures. They create
a lot of fun stuff. For example, you have to guess the film based on a smiley. People
just want to express their thoughts and feelings through them. This way of
communication is becoming more and more popular.
We are afraid that
these smiles, will bounce us back to cave paintings. Let's imagine how soon the
children will learn a poem by Alexander Pushkin through smileys!
So we urge you: “Take
care of our language, do not let the cuts spoil the beauty of it!”
