As we know the speaking
aspect of learning English is one of the most difficult for students. That’s
why we, teachers, should pay more attention to this part of our lesson.
During my lessons I
always try to motivate students asking them about their interests and
experience and, also, show them different examples from the real life.
Unfortunately, there is much information which we have to study, but there
isn’t enough time to do everything we want. That is the reason why my lesson is
usually devoted to accuracy rather than fluency. Though textbooks are full of
speaking tasks we need to study lexical and grammatical structures more often
because lots of students have plenty of gaps in their knowledge that they could
get at school. I work at technical college in Moscow and English level of my
student is really poor.
Honestly saying, I
haven’t found the appropriate balance between fluency and accuracy for my
students yet. But I’m trying to do it every lesson and I think that now I know
how to manage it. After studying the first lesson of the TDI course I found
some interesting techniques and examples how to teach. If I correct errors in
the end of the speech, it will be more progressive and everyone will be
involved. Also, repair strategies and everyday classroom expressions are really
helpful because students always want to ask loads of questions.
Well, I suppose that a
balance between focus on language and focus on meaning can be achieved with
some techniques at the lesson. Firstly, we should motivate students to study
language using bright and up-to-date sheets, videos, pictures and others.
Students can absorb new expressions and rules in the interesting context
unconsciously. Secondly, we should teach the group of students according to
their age, level, interests and social position and so on. Also, a role of the
teacher and arrangement of students’ seats can help to improve the results.
All in all, using
special techniques and strategies are always helpful for teacher and student.
Both of them know what to do and what purposes they have to follow.
