II. Reading Comprehension.
1. Read the text.
May in Great Britain is full of festivals and celebrations. The central figure of the old May Day was a May Queen. Traditionally they elected a May Queen on the first of May. Usually she was a schoolgirl.
Formally (впрежниевремена), she was not a child, but a young women, the most beautiful girl in the area or the most popular. There was often a May King. People played a lot of different games and sports. Archery (стрельбаизлука) was very popular, because on May Day people were sometimes dressed in Robin Hood costumes.
Nowadays over a thousand children take part in this May Queen Festival. Thousand of people from many parts of the world come here to watch how London’s May Queen is crowned. The date is the second Saturday in May. The procession starts in the village at about 1.30 p.m. The crowing (коронование) takes places at about 3.00 p.m. More than 40 May Queens from different parts of the country participate in the Festival. Their dresses are beautifully made. It’s a colourful sight.
