Teddy Bears
Teddy is a nickname for Theodore. Teddy is also the name of the soft and cuddly toy bear. The toy appeared in the very beginning of the 20th century in Germany and in the U.S.A. It was named after American President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1902 during a hunting trip President refused to shoot the little bear. This fact became very popular and the toymakers called a new toy bear Teddy. The toys were a success and Teddy became a proper bear’s name.
Soon, in 1914 the first teddy bears were produced in London and British loved the toys so much that England became their third motherland.

Winnie-the-Pooh
Another popular British bear is Winnie-the-Pooh created by Alan Milne in 1926 to amuse his son Christopher Robin. The name Winnie came from the real bear lived in the London Zoo. It was the most favourite animal of Christopher Robin and he called his own teddy bear Winnie too. The second name Pooh belonged to a swan who lived nearby and was another favourite animal of Christopher.
Pooh is a bear of very little brains, but with an uncommon everyday wisdom. He does a lot of silly things, and his love for honey is endless. But what is the most important for Pooh is the well being, happiness and feelings of his friends.

Pooh books
The first Pooh book “Winnie-the-Pooh” was published on October 14th, 1926. And all over the world Pooh’s birthday is celebrated on this date. The verses “Now We are Six” was released in 1927, and “The House at Pooh Corner” in 1928. All these books were illustrated in a beautiful way by Ernest Shepard.

Pooh and Disney
The Pooh books were also favourites of Walt Disney's daughters. Remembering how much they enjoyed these characters, Walt Disney released his first film about Winnie-the-Pooh in 1966. In 1996, Pooh Bear was acknowledged as the most loved and popular character of Disney.

Paddington Bear
In 1956 author Michael Bond waited out the heavy snow in a toy shop near Paddington station and bought a little teddy bear for his wife. Then he wrote his first Paddington Bear story in 10 days.
“Please look after this bear. Thank you.” These words, written on the label round his neck, made the Brown family decide to take the small brown bear home with them. They met him on Paddington station; he had travelled by himself all the way from Peru, with only a jar of his favourite marmalade to keep him going. After that Paddington Bear appeared in 20 more books.

Tatty Teddy (Me to You Bear)
In 1987 illustrator Mike Payne drew his first sketch of Tatty Teddy for an English greetings company. It was a charming “grey bear with the blue nose and patches”. He didn't look like other brown toy bears, because he had had a rough life - he was abandoned in an old house along with other unwanted things.
With such a touching story, sad eyes and “Me to you” writing on his left paw Tatty Teddy has become a celebrity in the world of teddy bears. With his sweet temper and friendly behaviour, he has won the hearts of adults and children all over the world.
