Practical: to assimilate the new material on a theme
“City tours” and to fix the grammatical theme “Past Simple”; to teach students
giving a guided tour; to extend students’ vocabulary within the topic “City

The beginning of the lesson________________________________________________________________________
Classroom expressions. Good afternoon, everybody. How’s
life? How’re the things with you? Now we can get down to work. I’m waiting for
you to be quiet. First of all today I’d like to begin with presentation of our
lesson plan.
Teacher introduces the topic by focusing on some quotations
made by famous people about travelling.
Teacher: Look at these thoughts of the famous people and
express your opinion.
I’m going to ask you to comment how you understand this
quotation.
Travelling is one way of lengthening life.

Today we have an open lesson which is called “City tours.
Past Simple”. At the lesson we’ll talk about how to give a guided tour and
revise the Past Simple tense. (slide 3)
There are the following
objectives of our lesson:
-to revise and practise using
Past Simple in speech;
-to develop skills and habits of
prepared and unprepared speech;
-to practise in giving guided tours;
-to develop skills in listening,
reading and writing;
-to enrich vocabulary on the
theme;

What ways of travel do you know? By air, by sea, by water.
What types of transport do you know? ( slide 6)
Look at the puzzle and find types of transport. (slide 7)
If you want to speak about travelling, it’ll be very
useful to name the reasons why people travel. (slide 8) – students are
naming the reasons of travelling: to see the sights, to make friends, to
discover new places, to know customs and traditions, etc.
a) Today
we have some new words which are concerned with our theme “the travelling”.
Let’s have a look on them, read, translate and give the definition. (side
10)
Teacher: Can you tell me what do the words “tour”, “trip”,
“excursion” and the “voyage” mean?
How are these words translated into Russian? Open your
copybooks and write these words, their definitions and translation. There are
different types of tours, such as: sightseeing tours, guided tours, museum
tours, city tours, etc.
Teacher: Today we are going to talk about a tour to our
city - Almaty. Can you name the reasons of travelling to Almaty? (slide 11)
Students are naming the reasons: to taste national food, to
practise Kazakh, to meet interesting people,

a) Answering

Students, let’s look at the tourist attractions in Almaty.
Which of them would be interesting to these tourists: A young married couple, a
family with young children, a group of students, a married couple in their
fifties; Explain your choice.
b) Web
task: famous buildings. (slide 13)
Find a short information about a famous building in Almaty
on the Internet or in travel guide. Write a short text and present it to your
group.

Teacher: Danyar, I know that you have found information
about hotel “Kazakhstan” Let’s have a look at it. (slide 15)
Danyar: The hotel was built in 1977. It was constructed to
stand an earthquake that measured 9.0 on the Richter scale. Seismic resistance
was confirmed in 1979 during a live-point earthquake. From 1977 to 2008 it was
the tallest building in Almaty. The architectors were awarded the State Prize
of Kazakh SSR in 1980.

From
the history of Almaty
The city was established in 1854. That year the
Russian government made the decision to establish a military fortress in
this place. It got the name Vernyi. The first Russian migrants began to
arrive there in the middle of 1855. The city received the present name
Almaty in 1921. From 1929 till 1997, it was the country's capital called
Alma-Ata. While not capital anymore, Almaty is the biggest city in Kazakhstan, the largest financial and cultural centre of the whole region.
b) Language
focus: Past Simple. (slide )
Form: We add –ed to regular Past
Simple verb forms: I watched the Olympics on the TV.
Irregular verbs have a different
form in the past: We saw “The Gold man” statue yesterday.
We form the negatives and
questions with did: We didn’t stay in the hotel.

Use: We use the Past Simple to
talk about events and actions that are finished at a definite time in the past:
When did the bus leave?
The Past Simple is often used
with these time expressions: last night/ Tuesday/ week/ month/ year; yesterday;
ago.
He sent the email last night.

We know that it is not so easy to give a bus tour.
Work in pairs. Think of five difficulties tour guides have
at work.
c) Listening.
We are going to listen Jenny, she is a bus tour guide in Barcelona. Listen and tick the difficulties she has. (slide ) (CD 1, track 11)

of the information.

slide. Here you should prepare a short bus tour for part of your city. Consider
the following points: -places of interest and area;
-factual information (opening and
closing times, prices)
-historical information;
-any other interesting facts;
When giving a guided tour always
remember PIE:
Politeness, especially
when answering questions.
Give clear and accurate information.
Show enthusiasm. (slide )
Teacher: Students, you have to divide into 3 groups and
prepare a short bus tour for part of your city. I think it won’t be so
difficult because we have just learnt some useful expressions and listened an
example of a bus tour.
I give you some minutes to
do this task. You can discuss it in a groups. Use your imagination and creative
skills as much as you can. Don’t forget about all features of a successful bus
tour.
(To do the task is given 5-7 minutes and after that one
from each group comes ant tell their reports). (slide 12)

Students have to do the Exercise 3 o page 18
in a workbook. (Complete a text with the forms of the Past Simple); learn the
new words and expressions on theme; and repeat the rules of Past Simple form
