Introduction a new material______________________________________________________________________

a)       Read the text and define the tense of underlined verbs. (slide  )

From the history of Almaty

The city was established in 1854. That year the Russian government made the decision to establish a military fortress in this place. It got the name Vernyi. The first Russian migrants began to arrive there in the middle of 1855. The city received the present name Almaty in 1921. From 1929 till 1997, it was the country's capital called Alma-Ata. While not capital anymore, Almaty is the biggest city in Kazakhstan, the largest financial and cultural centre of the whole region.

b)     Language focus: Past Simple. (slide )

Form: We add –ed to regular Past Simple verb forms: I watched the Olympics on the TV.

Irregular verbs have a different form in the past: We saw “The Gold man” statue yesterday.

We form the negatives and questions with did: We didn’t stay in the hotel.

What did she say? (slide )

Use: We use the Past Simple to talk about events and actions that are finished at a definite time in the past: When did the bus leave?

The Past Simple is often used with these time expressions: last night/ Tuesday/ week/ month/ year; yesterday; ago.

He sent the email last night. (slide )
