Art of the matter: Some say that the works of illusive British graffiti artist Banksy should be protected as they form part of the country's heritageBanksy is an anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director, active since the 1990s. He made his name in Bristol, before going to London, painting edgy stencils.

His works deal with subjects that are close to his heart. Through his works, he expresses sensitive topics of our world such as political, economic and social problems but he also denounces injustices, war, famine. He defends freedom, justice and the oppressed. His shock-images are often accompanied by powerful slogans to react and reflect.. His works have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Banksy has spoken on the walls of several cities around the world. We can count Paris, London, Bristol, Berlin, West Bank, Israel / Palestine (wall), and very recently New York (Fall 2013) among the cities or countries that have benefited from Banksy's talent.

Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Through his works, Banksy comes back to engaged subjects such as society, culture, the problems of capitalism to the media. He uses art to express his dissatisfaction and opinion. The technique most often used is that of the stencil (which allows the work to be done in advance and install it in a minimum of time to avoid being stopped by the police). He also uses paint bombs. His graffiti are very easily identifiable because his artistic style remains unique.

Banksy no longer sells photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but his public "installations" are regularly resold, often even by removing the wall they were painted on. A small number of Banksy's works are officially, non-publicly, sold through Pest Control. Banksy's documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film. In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards.

As of 2014, Banksy was regarded as a British cultural icon, with young adults from abroad naming the artist among a group of people that they most associated with UK culture, which included William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth IIDavid BeckhamThe BeatlesCharlie ChaplinJ. K. RowlingElton John, and Adele

Mickey Mouse and McDonald's are seen around the world as symbols of the United States and the success of the United States' economic system (capitalism) and its expansion throughout the world. The montage shows that the United States uses war to impose their system, even against people (bombing of villages). These two characters also symbolize the intervention of the United States in the Vietnam war for economic and political stakes.
The 2 characters also give off an appealing and friendly image (the Walt Disney ambassador, dream salesman & the Fast Food Clown, the restaurant for all social classes) in contrast with the burnt girl's cry of horror.

Прямоугольник: скругленные углы: Banksy's shredded painting authenticated as original artwork
A painting sent through a shredder at the moment of its auction sale has been officially confirmed as a work by street artist Banksy in its destroyed state.
Pest Control, the authentication body for the anonymous street artist, has verified that the painting – now partially sliced into thin strips – is itself a new original artwork.
"The new work has been granted a certificate by Pest Control, Banksy's authentication body, and has been given a new title, Love is in the Bin," reads a statement released by Sotheby's.
Banksy posted a video to his Instagram account last week after one of his best-known paintings was shredded just seconds after it was sold in an auction at Sotheby's in London, confirming that the move was intentional.
"A few years ago I secretly built a shredder into a painting. In case it was ever put up for auction," read the text cut between shots.
In the video, a white man wearing a hoody fixes a row of razor blades into the back of a traditional gilt frame, before laying the back board over the razors. The video is captioned with a quote from Picasso: "The urge to destroy is also a creative urge." It has been watched more than 12 million times.
An image of the auction room was also posted by Banksy's Instagram account at the moment the gavel fell. The caption, "Going, going, gone...", is a pun on the typical words of an auctioneer.
The incident took place in an evening auction at Sotheby's last week. The piece, which was listed as Girl with Balloon in the sale catalogue, started to destroy itself at the exact moment the auctioneer announced that it had sold for £1,042,000.
"It appears we just got Banksy-ed," said Alex Branczik, Sotheby's European head of contemporary art.
Sotheby's staff and art buyers in the room looked shocked, and the event sent ripples through the art world. Speculation has focused on whether the auction house knew that the spray paint and acrylic on canvas painting would self-destruct – something that Sotheby's denies.
After initial uncerta the buyer has now accepted Love is in the Bin.
"When the hammer came down last week and the work was shredded, I was at first shocked, but gradually I began to realise that I would end up with my own piece of art history," said the buyer.
As well as poking fun at the art world, Banksy has previously taken aim at the UK Conservative party and Brexit in his work.

Прямоугольник: скругленные углы: Banksy’s graffiti is part of the nation’s heritage and deserves protection by law, claim academics
Murals by graffiti artist Banksy are so important that they should be considered part of Britain's heritage and given legal protection, academics have argued. Some of his work sells for hundreds of thousands of pounds and he has become a cult figure in the art world. However, there have been instances of his distinctive stencils being painted over by councils not realising its significance.
This July one of his most famous pieces, Gorilla in a Pink Mask, in Eastville, Bristol, was scrubbed by cleaners who thought it was 'regular' graffiti, and researchers at the city's university want to stop this happening again.
This weekend Bristol played host to See No Evil - the UK's largest-ever permanent street art project - which transformed part of the city centre with huge murals from international artists.
While graffiti has traditionally been seen as a menace by local authorities and often as an indication of an area's decline, Bristol has seen the positive effects an artist like Banksy can bring to a city. Now research from Bristol University is questioning whether the work of the well-known artist should be protected from the possibility of being painted over or scrubbed away.
The investigation, led by John Webster, a postgraduate law student at the university who combines his studies with work at law firm Burges Salmon, said: ‘There is clearly a strong interest in Banksy's work that appears to be celebrated in popular culture as an artist in his own right.
‘It can be argued that his work, due to its political and social statements, carries a cultural significance in modern society. The public has indicated that this needs to be kept and by extension, preserved.
‘An application for listing is one of these methods. The effect of listing would also ensure that the work could be preserved for future generations and grants could be applied for to preserve the work.’
In 2006 Bristol City Council held an online poll asking for the public's view on a piece of Banksy's work on the blank wall of a clinic overlooking Park Street. The poll gave a result of 93 per cent in favour of keeping the work and it has remained. Due to its appearance on the front cover of the Beatles album, English Heritage said the famous black and white lines were capable of being listed as a structure due to the historic interest. However, there are no English Heritage guidance documents on street art or graffiti. The body is directed towards preserving the historic environment rather than looking forward at prospective heritage of the present.Mr Webster said: ‘In terms of should a Banksy work be listed, it is clearly a future heritage asset
