(breakfast). This typically comprises of the following things: toasted bread,
spread with butter, jam, marmalade or honey; followed by a 'fry-up' or cooked breakfast
of fried bread, sausages, bacon, mushrooms, eggs and tomatoes. Served with hot tea, with
milk added. However, with today’s fast lifestyle and an increasing awareness of
healthy eating this traditional breakfast is now largely eaten only at the
weekend, and has been replaced by another in most households. A typical
modern breakfast comprises: fruit juice, toast and jam, packet cereal
(cornflakes or similar), and tea. In the morning Americans have cereal or
scrambled eggs, milk or orange juice.
6 slide: (elevenses). In some households and
workplaces this is called by something called 'elevenses'. This consists of a
cup of tea or coffee and some biscuits. Actually 'elevenses' can be taken at
anytime of the day, and with most people this is usually fairly often!
During the first decades of the 19th century, elevenses consisted of drinking
whiskey.
7 slide: (lunch) For many Englishmen lunch is a
fast meal. In big cities there are a lot of sandwich bars where office clerks
can choose all sorts of sandwiches with meat, fish, chicken, ham, prawns, eggs,
cheese, vegetables and lettuce. English pubs also serve good food for lunch,
hot and cold. Quite a lot of workers go to famous “fish and chips shops” and
buy their favorite deep fried cod or haddock with French fries. Americans
usually have chicken or fish, fried potatoes, vegetable salads, and desert:
this is the most common menu for lunch. Many people eat lunch while at work or
school. Employers and schools usually provide a lunch break in the middle of
the day, lasting as much as an hour. Some factories and schools have canteens
where you can eat.
But the packed lunch is the most common thing to
eat. A packed lunch normally consists of some sandwiches, a packet of crisps,
an apple and a can of something to drink, for example, coca-cola. The contents
are kept in a plastic container and you take it with you when you go to school
or work.
8 slide: (afternoon tea). A lot of Englishmen
drink their 5 o clock tea. Tea is very popular among the English; it may almost
be called their national drink. The English like it strong and fresh made. The
English put one teaspoon of tea for each person. Tea means two things. It is a
drink and a meal.
Traditionally, loose tea would be served in a
teapot with milk and sugar. This would be accompanied by various sandwiches,
scones and usually cakes and pastries. The food would be often served in a
tiered stand. Americans drink a lot of juices and soda,
iced tea.
9 slide: Did you know?
If someone asks you if you 'would like a cuppa',
they are asking if you would like a cup of tea.
If someone says 'let me be mother' or 'shall I be
mother', they are offering to pour out the tea from the teapot.
10 slide: (dinner). British
people eat their evening meal at about 7 o’clock, when all members of the
family are at home together. Dinner – the evening meal – is the biggest
and the main meal of the day. It begins with soup. The most typical thing to
eat for dinner is "meat and two vegs". This consists of a piece of
meat accompanied by two different boiled vegetables. One of the vegetables is
almost always potatoes. For
dessert, English wives cook various puddings and serve them with ice-cream or
jam.
For dinner Americans
usually have meat, fried or baked potatoes with ketchup or sour cream, corn,
peas, sometimes macaroni and cheese or spaghetti; ice-cream, fruit or cake may
be for dessert. Dinner is probably the most important meal of the day, some
people have family dinner, when all members of family have to be there.
Traditional food eaten on different holidays and
celebrations is really interesting, various and tasty.
