Big Ben

“Big Ben” is the name of the huge clock on one of the tall towers of the Houses of Parliament. The Houses of Parliament is a very large building. It stands on the left bank of the Thames and is 948 feet in length. Those who want to get a good front view of the building should look at it from a boat on the Thames.

The Clock Tower, facing Westminster Bridge, is 326 feet high. The clock is one of the finest in the world. Its bell has a deep musical voice although it is cracked.

The clock was named after Sir Benjamin Hall under whose direction it was made. People are allowed to get inside the tower if they wish to see the works of Big Ben. There is no lift in the tower and there are 14 feet long, the hour hand is 9 feet, the figures are 2 feet long.

The great Bell has four Little Bens round it. Big Ben strikes only once an hour, but the other four tell the quarters and the half-hours. At the side of Big Ben there is a huge hammer weighing over 440 pounds.

Тест по английскому языку проводится в ходе изучения темы "My Day" (учебник О.В.Афанасьевой, И.В.Михеевой "English-6/ 2-й год обучения). Благодаря школьному компоненту, в учебном плане предусмотрены 4( а не 3) урока английского в неделю, поэтому есть возможность использовать на уроках дополнительный страноведческий и грамматический материал. На самом деле, этот тест собран из двух- задание по чтению и по грамматике даются отдельно и на разных уроках. Класс не очень сильный, поэтому для выполнения теста требуется много времени. Плюс подготовка по каждому аспекту. Во второй группе тот же тест выполняется в течение одного урока.
