7. The story of “the Union Jack”

And now, if we’re speaking about the flags, I will tell you the history of the Union Jack.

This is the popular name given to the flag of Great Britain. Actually, it is called the Union Flag and it is a mixture of several flags.

It all began in 1606 when Scotland was joined to England and Wales. The Scottish flag, St Andrew's Cross, blue with a white cross from corner to corner, was joined to the English Flag, St George's Cross, white with a red cross.

Later, in 1801, when Ireland was joined to the Union, the Irish Flag of St Patrick's Cross was added, white with a red cross from corner to corner.

So, the English people got the Union Flag, which is red, white and blue. King James the Third ordered that the Union Flag must be put on all British ships. A “jack”, by the way, is an old word for the sailor. Here the flag was put at the front of the ships and so it got the name of Union Jack.

8. Work on Reported Speech

And now it’s the very time to work a little on our grammar – “Reported Speech”.

1) Grammar questions: Что такое косвенная речь? С помощью каких глаголов она передается? Как мы переводим из прямой речи в косвенную?

2) Report the sentences:

  1. Bob:” I like ice-cream.”

  2. Polly:” Bring me a cup of tea, Marry.”

  3. Suzy:” I can’t play tennis.”

  4. Bob:” I don’t want any milk.”

  5. Sofia:” Don’t take these pens, Nelly.

9. Summing up. Giving home task

At home you will write an essay “The Land and People of the UK”
