«We
decided to go to the art gallery (museum). Let’s imagine that we are at an
exhibition. We are going to see pictures (pieces, canvas). Have
a look at the pictures and try to describe one of them on your own. You should express
your impressions.
Of
course, you should mention the name and the author of the most pleasant picture.
It is possible to add when this picture was painted. For example: Thomas
Gainsborough "The Honorable Mrs. Graham" (1775) or Joseph Mallord
William Turner "The Grand Canal, Venice" (1835).
You
can say some words about the artist (painter):
-
famous (unknown, world-famous) Russian (English) artist;
-
belonging to the realistic (modern, romantic, classical) school of painting; [1,
26]
-
was appreciated in lifetime or died forgotten and penniless and was
prized highly by succeeding generations. [2]
No
matter, if we speak about the amateur (self-taught) artist or about the mature
artist (professional artist), we will estimate his work. We know that any
gifted (talented) person can create a masterpiece.
Let’s
continue describing our picture. What is the genre of the picture? It can be a
self-portrait, a family/group/ceremonial portrait, a landscape, a seascape, a still
life, a historical painting, a flower piece, a battle-piece. Is it an oil-painting,
a watercolour painting or a pastel picture? An artist can paint from nature,
memory or imagination. Some artists specialize only in portraiture. Others are
fond of still life. Some artists like to paint historical or mythological
subjects.
Ideas
for creativity are unlimited. If an artist portrays people he tries to convey
their emotions and mood in a scene of common life. While describing the picture
we should say what or who was placed in the foreground (at the bottom/top, in
the middle of the picture, in the background, in the distance, in the far
distance). The artist paints (portrays, draws, depicts, represents) the details
of the scenery with great impression (with great feeling). Some things look symmetrically
or asymmetrically. The artists often place the figures against the landscape
background. If you describe a picture with the person as the model
(sitter), say if he/she is represented sitting, standing, talking and so on.
Say
what creates the mood of the picture. The
impression can't be made without competent work with light and shade effects, colouring.
Is
colouring subtle or gaudy?
Say
what combination of colours predominates in the picture: cool and restful, soft
and delicate, hot and agitated, dull, oppressive.
Whether
we like the work of the master or not it is necessary to sum up the result and
to express the impressions in a few words. This exquisite piece of painting
(unsurpassed masterpiece) can be touching, lyric and romantic on character and
general atmosphere. If it isn’t so we can use such words as crude, obscure and
unintelligible, gaudy, depressing, disappointing picture.
To
express positive impressions you can use this support list:
“I
am favourably impressed by the picture.
It
is realistic and true to life.
It
is an honest presentation of…
This
is what I should call true realism.
Isn’t
it superb!
Look
at this portrait. It is a work of genius.
The
effect of the light is striking.
It
is magnificent (lovely, amazing).
It
is an impressive piece of art.
It
conveys its meaning absolutely.” [1, 27]
If
your impressions are negative you can say:
“The
drawing is full of faults.
The
perspective lacks depth.
Light
is not rendered at all.
I
shouldn’t call it a painting at all.
It
offends the eye.
It
is too bad for words.
It
is completely meaningless.
I
was shocked
by...” [1, 27]
