STUDENT ABOUT HIMSELF

My name is Nick. I was born in May in Bern. I am 17 years old.

This year I finished the secondary school. From earliest schooldays I had dreamed to become a lawer . This year I passed the General State Examinations successfully. While at school, I was interested in too many things. My favourite subjects were Maths, History, Literature, English. I am going to apply to the Law Faculty. There are a lot of problems in our country. My wish is to understand the ways how a law-governed state should work. I want to defend those who are unjustly offended, who can't defend themselves because they do not know laws. The duty of lawyers is not only to punish criminals. The lawyers protect the legal interests of people - citizens, organizations, factories and small and large firms. Maybe I would become a barrister, maybe I would choose to become a legal adviser.

A lawyer must be very well educated. People often ask for his advice. His competent knowledge of laws can help people in difficult situations. To serve the interests of people is the main task of any good specialist.

I want to tell you a few words about my family. My family is large. I have got a mother, a father, a sister, a brother and a grandmother. My mother is a pediatrician. She works at a clinic. She is a good-looking woman with brown hair. She is forty-four but she looks much younger. My mother keeps house and takes care of me, my brother and my father. She is very good at cooking and is clever with her hands. My father and I try to help her with the housework. I wash the dishes, go shopping and tidy our flat.

My father is a computer programmer. He is a broad-shouldered, tall man with fair hair and grey eyes. He is forty-six. He is also handy with many things. When we are at home and have some free time, we watch video or football matches together.

My parents have been married for twenty-six years. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, books, films, and sports. But they have the same opinion about my education and upbringing.

My grandmother is a pensioner. She lives with us and helps to run the house.

My sister Helen is twenty-three. She is married and has a family of her own. She works as an accountant at a joint venture company. Her husband is a lawyer. They have a son. They live not far from us.

My brother Alex is fifteen. He is a schoolboy. He wants to become an economist, but he is not sure yet. And some words about me. I’m tall, fair-haired and even-tempered. I always try to be in a good mood.

We have a lot of relatives. We are deeply attached to each other and we get on very well.

Текст «My Friend»

My best friend is Sergey. We made friends ten years ago. We are of the same age. We live in the same block of flats, so we see each other almost every day. Sergey is a tall boy. He has dark hair, large dark eyes, a straight nose and fat lips. He is a very nice guy. He is very honest, just and kind. I trust him a lot and I'm sure that I can rely on him in any situation. He never lets people down.

Sergey likes to wear black jeans and checked shirts. As he is short-sighted, he sometimes wears spectacles. Sergey is only 19, but he is very responsible - he finishes whatever he starts. He's got only one shortcoming. He is a bit stubborn, nevertheless he is pleasant to deal with. Sergey's parents love him very much. His father is a teacher of Mathematics. He is the most interesting man I've ever met. He knows everything about mathematics, but he is well-read in Russian history, too. His jokes are clever, full of humour. Though I love my father, sometimes I envy Sergey - he has a brilliant interlocutor at home! His mother is a teacher of English. No wonder Sergey is so talented. He speaks English very well. Sometimes we speak English together for practice, but I don't know so many words as he knows.

We spend a lot of time together. We often watch video or listen to music. Sometimes we go to the cinema or to the theatre, or walk around the centre of our town, visiting libraries, small cafes. We talk for hours about all sorts of things - politics, love, teachers, girls. If we marry, let it be on the same day! We discuss films, television programmes, books. I never quarrel with Sergey. But if there is some misunderstanding between us we try to make peace as soon as possible. What I like best about him is that he is always willing to help and share his knowledge, thoughts, feelings. I respect him for his fairness, strong will, intellect and modesty.

I miss Sergey when we don't see each other for a long time. Without him I would feel lonely.

MY WORKING DAY

My working day begins about seven o’clock. I put on my dressing gown and slippers and go to the bathroom. I brush my teeth and wash my face. Then I take a shower and go back to the bedroom to dress.

I have breakfast at a quarter to eight. I always cook breakfast myself and try to make something special. I like bacon and eggs, sausages and cheese and a cup of tea or coffee. I wish mother wouldn’t worry about me.

After breakfast I go to the Academy by bus. It takes me half an hour to get to the Academy. I never arrive late. I can say that my study at the Academy is very interesting. Every day I have one lecture and two practical classes which are delivered by our qualified teachers (assistants) and professors. They are very good specialists. My dream is to become a good lawer and I hope it will come true.

At 13 o’clock we have a break for lunch. I usually have lunch with a friend of mine. I take stewed meat or beefsteak or chops with salad and a cup of coffee or tea. My friend likes a proper meal. He has soup, steak, or fish with vegetables and juice. We have a chat before beginning our lessons again.

Sometimes after classes I go to the library where I read additional literature on the subjects I need. Sometimes I help my mother to do some shopping. I prefer to buy vegetables and fruit, milk, butter and cheese, bread and sugar. I help her to clean the flat.

At half past seven we have supper. I like this time best of all. Sometimes we talk, listen to music or watch television. But usually I have a lot of work to do. I have to prepare for my classes. I go to bed at 12 o’clock. I like swimming and once a week I go to the swimming pool.

I study at a secondary school. It is a modern building which is situated nearly in the centre of one of the industrial districts of our city. It has three floors. In front of our school there are a lot of green trees and a large sports ground. To the right you can see a stadium where pupils have their lessons in Physical Training when the weather is fine.

Our school also has a large gymnasium, workshops, a cloakroom, laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and other subjects. You can find a doctor's office, a large hall, and a library in our school on the ground floor. There are classrooms for senior and junior pupils. The rooms, corridors and the halls are full of light. During the years of studies we get much knowledge in different subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Russian and Foreign Languages (English, German, French), History, Geography, Literature and others.

Our teachers not only give us knowledge but they also teach us to love our Motherland and nature, to be honest, helpful and modest. My favourite subjects at school are Literature and English. The teachers of these school subjects are well-educated and interesting persons. We are taught to understand Russian classics and the works of modern authors. I am fond of reading. My favourite writers are Pushkin and Mark Twain. At the lessons of English we learn much information about Great Britain, the USA and other English-speaking countries; we read and write, ask and answer questions. This year I am finishing the ninth form, and there are 3 roads open for me: either to enter a vocational school, or a technical secondary college, or to go to the 10th form. I want to continue my education at school. I like my school very much and I'm proud of it.

Having passed state examinations graduates receive their diplomas and can apply for clinical internship.

Cambridge

Cambridge is one of the two main universities of England which is located at the Cam River. It was founded at the beginning of the 12th century. The University consists of (состоит из) 24 different colleges including 4 colleges for women. Each college is self-governing (самоуправляется).

The head of the University is the chancellor who is elected for life. The teachers are commonly called «dons» and «tutors». Part of the teaching is by means of lectures organized by the University. Besides lectures teaching is carried out by tutorial system for which Cambridge University is famous all over the world. This is a system of individual tuition (обучения) organized by the colleges.

Each student has a tutor who practically guides him through the whole course of studies. The tutor plans the student's work and once a week the student goes to his tutor to discuss his work with him. The training course lasts 4 years. The academic year is divided into 3 terms. The students study natural and technical sciences, law, history, languages, geography and many other subjects.

After three years of study a student may proceed (получить ученую степень) to a Bachelor's degree, and later to the degrees of Master and Doctor. Students are required to wear gowns (мантия) at lectures, in the University library, in the street in the evening, for dinners in the colleges and for official visits.

All the students must pay for their education, examinations, books, laboratories, university hostel, the use of libraries, etc. Very few students get grants. Not many children from the working class families are able to get higher education, as the cost is high. The cost of education depends on the college and speciality.

A number of great men, well-known scientists and writers studied at Cambridge. Among them are: Erasmus, the great Dutch scholar, Bacon, the philosopher, Milton and Byron, the poets, Cromwell, the soldier, Newton and Darwin, the scientists.

Higher Education in the USA

There is no national system of higher education in the United States. Higher education is given in colleges and universities. There are over 2100 various higher educational institutions, including colleges, technological institutes and universities. The average college course of study is 4 years. The academic year is usually 9 months or 2 terms (semesters) of four and a half months each. Classes usually begin in September and end in June. The first-year students are called freshmen

Students choose a major subject (профилирующий предмет, дисциплина) and take many courses in this subject. After four years, they get a traditional Bachelor's degree. Then the students may go on to graduate school (старшие курсы) and with a year or two of further study get a Master's degree.

After another year or two of study and research, they may get a still higher degree as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.). The student's progress is evaluated by means of tests, term works and final examinations in each course. The student's work is given a mark, usually on a five point scale (5-балльная система). Letters indicate the level of achievement. «A» is the highest mark. «F» denotes a failure.

Most American colleges and universities charge for tuition. The methods of instruction in the universities are lectures, discussions, laboratory and course works and seminars.

Most cities have colleges or universities that hold classes at night as well as in daytime. In this way people may work for a degree or just take a course in the subject that interests them.

B.TRAVELLING

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries, modern cities or the ruins of ancient towns.

Some people like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, other people prefer a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains.

There are various means of transport. If you want to get somewhere as quickly as possible, the best way is to travel by plane. It gives you comfort and saves your time. It's better to book tickets in advance. You may book a single, return or open return ticket. When booking a ticket you should mention what class you are going to travel: first, business or economy class. Keep in mind, you have to come to the airport one and a half hour before the flight. Before boarding the plane you should check-in (register) your luggage at a check-in desk. Here you are required to have your luggage weighed and a clerk attaches a special tag to it. There is no need to worry about your luggage any longer.

Then you must go through the security check, passport and Customs control (when you go abroad). Now you may go to the gate, where your flight is boarding.

It often happens that a delay on a flight is announced. In this case you have to wait till you hear the announcement that your flight is boarding.

When the plane is taking off, the passengers fasten their seat belts and listen to the information about the flight. An air-hostess (stewardess) offers you mineral water, juice, or something to eat. You may look down on the earth. It’s like a geographical map. The time passes quickly. The plane usually arrives at the airport on time.

Travelling by railway is slower than by plane but it has its advantages. You can see the countryside around you, read books or magazines, play chess or cards. It's not boring if you have good companions in the compartment. I'm fond of travelling by fast long-distance train. It has got a lot of carriages, a dining-car, and a luggage van. I prefer an upper berth. When the train goes out, I say «Good bye» to my friends and relatives who usually come to see me off. When the train comes in, I get out and ask the porter to carry my luggage. I’m not tired after a long journey by train.

Travelling by car and hitch-hiking are the cheapest and most popular ways of travelling.

As for me I like to spend my days off in the country, closer to nature. I can drive a car and enjoy picturesque places with forests, lakes and rivers. I am fond of fishing and hunting that’s why I walk a lot. In summer we often go camping. I think it is a very useful thing for my health.

The Pacific Paradise Tour took us to California, on the west coast of the United States, and to the Hawaiian islands in the Pacific Ocean. With beautiful countryside, exciting cities and fantastic beaches, this holiday had everything.

The first place we stopped at was San Francisco, in northern California. This city is famous for its cable cars(фуникулер) — and it certainly needs them because San Francisco is extremely hilly and has some very steep roads! By the sea, next to the fishing boats, there are the fish restaurants. Here we enjoyed watching the street actors and musicians as we ate delicious fresh fish. One thing we'll never forget is the Golden Gate Bridge, which is very big and beautiful.

The next city on the tour was Los Angeles. This city is very exciting and has some very famous attractions. The nearby beaches are long and sandy and the mountains outside the city are high and dry. We visited the beach where they were filming Baywatch. We also went to Disney-land. After that they took us to Hollywood to see the houses of the stars who have made a lot of films — and a lot of money!

The last place we visited in California was San Diego, a city with sun, sand, sea and all kinds of watersports. We went to the San Diego Zoo which is one of the world's largest zoos. We also visited Mexico, which is only a short drive away from San Diego.

Finally, we went to Hawaii. It's paradise! We sat on golden beaches with green palm trees and watched amazing red sunsets. We also saw colorful fish at Sea Life Park and went snorkeling in Hanauma Bay. In the evenings we enjoyed the lively clubs, bars and ice-cream parlours. Best of all, we ate fantastic Hawaiian food while watching Hawaiian people performing traditional Polynesian dances.

This holiday was fantastic. So when you have time, get on the first plane to the west coast of The United States and have the time of your life!

Also, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. For example, you can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, and go to the theatre and to concerts. What is more, when you want to relax, you can feed the ducks or just sit on a park bench and read a book. All in all, city life is full of bustle and variety and you need never feel bored.

However, for every plus there is a minus. For one thing, you might have a job, but unless it is very well-paid, you will not be able to afford many of the things that there are to do, because living in a city is often very expensive. It is particularly difficult to find good, cheap accommodation. What is more, public transport is sometimes crowded and dirty, particularly in the rush hour, and even the parks can become very crowded, especially on Sundays when it seems that every city-dweller is looking for some open space and green grass. Last of all, despite all the crowds, it is still possible to feel very lonely in a city. In conclusion, I think that city life can be particularly appealing to young people, who like the excitement of the city and don't mind the noise and pollution. However, many people, when they get older, and particularly when they have young children, often prefer the peace and fresh air of the countryside.

1. Do you live and/or work in a city? Is it very big? How many advantages and disadvantages of city life can you think of?

2. Write about the pros and cons of living in the country.

Перевести текст Small Towns and Big Cities

и выполнить задания после текста

Today, people all over the world are moving out of small towns in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.

In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories or businesses have been built in or near a city, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a residential area nearby, where the factory workers can live. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and stores, so more people come to live in the area to provide these services — and so a city grows.

In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this is usually in the downtown area of the city. It is here that you can see the huge skyscrapers containing many floors of offices. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial and business areas. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big yards. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores in shopping malls where you can buy all you need.

But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Maybe not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns.
