To enrich students’ knowledge about Abai Kunanbaev; to develop students’ Critical Thinking; to educate the respect and interests in Abai’s works.

Good morning, my dear friends! I’m glad to see you! You are looking great! How are you? Let’s start our lesson.(Slide 1) Today we are going to talk about a great Kazakh writer and poet Abai Kunanbaev. He was born in 1845 in the Chinghis Mountains in Semipalatinsk Region. On the eve of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Abai UNESCO announced the year of 1995 that Abai Kunanbaev, it passed a decision to mark the jubilee throughout the world. This year the 170th anniversary of the birth of the Great Abai is celebrated. (Slide 2) In order to promote cultural heritage of the great poet there are three state museums in Kazakhstan. One of them is located in the city of Abay in Karaganda region - a literary-memorial museum of Abai Kunanbaev.

The city  Abai is named after him.

You know, Abai wrote poems devoted to seasons. Please, work in groups, read the extract from the poem “Spring”, written in 1990 and fill in the missing words.

  1. Spring came and melted the snow and ice.
    The earth was covered in… ( light, soft, green,red) velvet.
    Freed from winter's hibernation and heartache
    all that lives dings with its heart to… (warmth, coldness, kindness, kind) and light.

Appendix1

Abai Kunanbaev

1)The great Kazakh poet was born in 1845 in the Chinghis Mountains in Semipalatinsk Region. His father, Kunanbai, a stern and willful steppe ruler, was an elder of the Tobykty clan.

Abai`s mother, Ulzhan, was a wonderful woman, and with her innate reserve, tolerance, and soundness of reasoning. She loved Abai best of all her children, and affectionately called him Abai (which means thoughtful, circumspect) instead of Ibraghim – the name given the boy by his father.

2)The joining to oral people amateur of and house education with mullah started in early childhood has been continued in madrasah of Ahmed-Riza imam. At the same time he was studying in Russian school and by the end of five years' study he starts to write poems.

Abai became an ardent champion of friendship and brotherhood between the Russian and Kazakh cultures. He loved Pushkin, Lermontov, Krylov, Saltykov – Shedrin and Tolstoi, and after that memorable summer of 1886 when he opened embarked on his poetic career Abai started translating Krylov, Pushkin and Lermontov into Kazakh, acquainting countrymen for the first time with these great writers.

3)Having an excellent knowledge and understanding of Kazakh folk music, Abai composed several melodies. He also wrote music for his translations from Eugene Onegin. By this time the name of Abai himself – a poet, thinker and composer – had earned countrywide popularity and esteem. He composed about twenty melodies.

«Kara Sozder» [Book of Words] (prose) created by the great thinker constitute an ethnic philosophical work. This creation of his is an exploration of Kazakh national life in the second half of the 19th century. He influenced social affairs in the country where he lived.
The greatest poet Abai Kunanbaev was died in 1904.

Целью данного урока является развитие у учащихся интереса к произведениям Абая Кунанбаева, развитие коммуникативных умений, критического мышления учащихся. Структура урока соответствует современным требованиям- 1 стадия- вызов, 2 стадия- осмысление, 3 стадия- рефлексия. На уроке учащиеся учатся рассказывать биографию Абая, читать его слова-назидания на английском языке. Учащиеся выполняют задание на сопоставление, читают наизусть стихи Абая, переведённые на английский язык, выполняется упражнение на развитие языковой догадки при изучениии отрывка из стихотворения "Весна".
