TOPIC: HEALTHY AND UNHEALTHY FOOD
to enrich pupils’ vocabulary on the topic “Food” and practise it in using;
to develop habits of healthy eating style;
to practise pupils’reading, listening and speaking skills.
Equipment: a multimedia projector, a computer presentation, the textbook Spotlight (6 form), the basket with fruit and vegetables, video songs — “The rainbow colours” and “The ABC train”.
T. Hello, everybody! I’m glad to see you. Let’s start our lesson with greeting rhymes.
Red and yellow, green and blue,
Hello, friends, how are you?
P. Red and yellow, green and blue,
Hello, teacher, how are you?
T. I’m fine. And I hope you are fine, too.
Today we have started our lesson with revision of main colours. On the screen you can see a rainbow of colours.
They are colours of fruits, vegetables and greens. So, are you ready to guess the topic of our lesson today? We shall speak about..........(answers: about vegetables and fruits, about food)
Really the topic of our lesson today is HEALTHY AND UNHEALTHY FOOD.
Write down the topic of our lesson.
Today we shall
brush up vocabulary connected with food and colours
read and speak about healthy and unhealthy food
develop reading, speaking, listening and writing skills.
Now imagine, please, we are going by train. Every carriage carries different food.
Remember the poem about food train and help me to finish some sentences. We shall work in groups.
I gr. It is going our train.
T. Over the river ,
Over the plain,
II gr. Quickly is going
Our food train.
T. Carrying fruits, and greens, and cherries
I gr. And delicous other berries.
T. Fish and bread, milk and meat
II gr. All these foods we very need.
T. Well done! And now watch a short video about a food train. Remember the names of food.
(after video) So, what food products does the food train carry?
It carries.........(pupils’ answers)
T. And now look at the screen and say what you see. Use the phrase “I can see....”
(The children name foods: banana, bread, celery, butter, carrot, orange, chicken, dill, potato, cake, herring, pike, cheese, apple, cabbage, beef, milk, biscuit, cherry, parsley, watermelon, sour cream, pork, strawberry, pears, grapes, sausage, ham, caviar, lettuce, curds, eggs, buns, pie, mint)
Today we shall speak about food groups and divide products into these groups. Look at the screen.
You can see the table. What food groups do you see? (answers: fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy, bakery, berries, greens)
T. Now let’s divide words that you see into food groups.
You must find 3 words of every group.So, name .......
FRUIT 2. VEGETABLES 3. MEAT 4. FISH 5. DAIRY 6. BAKERY
7. BERRIES 8. GREENS
II. Main part of the lesson
T. Today we shall read and speak about healthy and unhealthy food. Look at the screen. I would like to aquaint you with some English proverbs.
An apple a day keeps a doctor away.
Say in Russian: what is this proverb about?
- Почему яблоко полезно?
- Какие полезные вещества в нём есть? (витамины, минералы)
- Может ли еда быть вредной?
- Какие продукты врачи не советуют есть? Почему?
Можно ли говорить о полезной (healthy) и вредной (unhealthy) пище?
The next proverb is:
We eat to live, but we don’t live to eat.
О чём вторая пословица?
And now look at the screen and listen to the poem.
He ate a lot of fish, he ate a lot of meat.
He ate a lot of porridge and ten eggs,
And all cookies Mother had.
He drank a lot of juice, he ate a cake.
Then said: “I have a stomack ache”.
Who is this person (the main hero of the poem)? (It’s Robin Bobin)
Does he eat correct?
Has Robin healthy eating habits?
May be you know the Russian translation of this poem?

Eat these fruits every day: oranges, bananas, apples, beans, grapes.
In autumn we gather a lot of vegetables: carrots, potatoes, onions, flour, cabbage, cucumbers.

A. As you can see, tastes differ. Different people like different food. Listen to the rhyme about it and translate.
Some of us like brown bread,
Some of us like white,
Some of us eat a lot of meat,
Some don’t think it’s right.
Some of us like apples,
Some drink juice at night,
Some of us eat many sweets,
Some don’t think it’s right.
T. I have prepared some information about fruits and vegetables. So, how can they help us? Slide 21
They give us energy. Eating foods of this group will protect you from many serious ilnesses. Slide 22
They are brain food. They help us to concentrate. Carrots are very good for our eyesight. Mangoes, oranges and pears have lots of vitamin C. This vitamin helps our body fight off infections.Slide 23
Cucumber, cabbage, lettuce keep our emotions under control. They also keep your teeth and bones strong and healthy. Slide 24
They give us positive emotions and optimism. Eat bananas, pineapples, lemons and you will smile and joke.
They are useful to eat before you go to bed. They help us relax and calm.
Foods like prunes, figs and beetroot make people more creative. Many famous people like Picasso and Da Vinci were fans of purple foods.
So, let’s, make the summary. On the screen you can see the table of healthy and unhealthy food. What can you tell on this topic?

What is the healthy food? ....(fruits and vegetables; chicken, milk, cheese, fish and meat; rice, eggs, potatoes, cereal)

What products are unhealthy? (sweets, biscuits, fizzy drinks, butter, chocalate, crisps, cakes)
T. We start WRITING ACTIVITY
On the screen you can see a list of products. Divide them into two groups – healthy and unhealthy products. Do it in written form.
Lemons, pepper, sugar, porridge, grapes, salt, eggs, coca-cola, milk, fat, apples, crisps, carrots, candies, yourgurt.
T. So, let’s remember information from our lesson.

2.What food makes you strong and gives you energy?
3. What food protects your bones and teeth?
4. Why should we eat vegetables and fruit?
5. What food, you think, is bad for you?
T. I think now you know about healthy food products. Your classmates have prepared the poem about healthy food. Listen.
