5. Vocabulary.
a) - We have revised the
words and their definitions on the topic “Natural disasters”. Tell me please
what verbs you remember when we speak about disasters?
P: To break, to damage,
to kill, to die, to spoil, to suffer, to destroy, to hurt…
- As you see all the
verbs mean something awful, destructive. Some verbs have a very similar
meaning. Let’s revise them.
- Read the word, explain
what it means and give your examples.
P: To break – to separate
something into parts suddenly, violently. “The boy has broken his leg”
P: To destroy – to damage
something so much that it cannot be repaired; to ruin. “An earthquake destroyed
a lot of houses in our town”.
P: To damage – to spoil
or to break something so that it does not work properly or look like it did
before. “The drought did a lot of damage”.
-
You
should remember the difference between these three words. They have very
similar meaning but not the same. If you break something you have a chance to
repair it. But if you destroy something, you can’t repair it, it’s impossible.
If you damage something, it will work but not properly.
b) – We have revised the
verbs they will help us to describe disasters. But for description of something
you need adjectives too. Look at the board. You can see some adjectives there.
Which of them can describe disasters best? Go to the board, choose the word and
put it under the word “disaster”. Then read and translate it.
The words: terrible,
dangerous, quick, weak, changeable, cruel, great, impressive, noisy, bright,
threatening, dark, unusual, unfriendly, unpleasant, violent, useful, fragile, powerful,
destructive.
Disasters can be:
terrible, dangerous, powerful, quick, cruel, great, impressive, noisy,
threatening, dark, unusual, unpleasant, violent, and destructive.
6. Speaking.
- We have revised the
adjectives. What meaning do they have positive or negative?
P: They have negative
sense.
-
We
associate the words with evil, misfortune, harm. Let’s look at the pictures
where we can see destructive rower of disasters and describe them using the
words which we have revised.
P: A hurricane. There is
a very violent wind. The wind can damage houses and break trees. It rains very
heavily. People can’t walk.
P: A drought. There is no
water everywhere. The ground is dry. Animals suffer without water. It doesn’t
rain for a long time. People suffer without water too.
P: An earthquake. The
ground shakes, it destroys houses, routes, cars and everything in an earthquake
area. People can be hurt under the fragments of their houses. The ground is in
breaks.
P: A tornado. A funnel of
air can be very strong and it can pick up cars, animals, houses. It can destroy
houses. The violent winds of tornadoes blow down almost everything on their
way.
P: A flood. Floods do a
lot of damage, they destroy fields, damage houses. It can rain without stopping.
People and animals suffer because they must leave their homes. There is water
everywhere.
P: A volcano. Volcanoes
do a lot of damage if people live not far from them. Lava can destroy towns,
kill people and animals. A volcano eruption may cause an earthquake.
7. Listening.
- The results of natural
disasters are terrible. How do you think where they can occur more often, in
which stats?
P: in Russia, the USA…
- Let’s listen to the
tape and find out where they can occur. Open your books at p. 23 see ex.78. you
have to fill in the table.

- As you see these
disasters happen everywhere and in our country too. Let’s learn some facts about
disasters in our country. These sentences will help you. Now you will work in
pairs. One student should make up a question, another one should answer it
using given prompts. Then act out your dialogues. You may write down your

9.
Projects - working in groups.
-
As you see all these natural disasters can occur in our country too, may be in
some regions more often than in our Republic. Unfortunately nowadays we can’t
predict exactly when and where they can happen. But people must be ready for
them. In all these disasters people need help.
-Who
will help then in these dangerous situations?
P:
Emergency workers.
-
Emergency workers are specially trained people who do their job during and
after these types of disasters. People of which professions are rescue service
workers?
P:
Doctors, firemen, water and gas workers do their job in difficult situations.
Sometimes the police and army help people too.
-
You have read the text about them at home. Now you will work in groups. Each
row is one group. You choose one disaster. You are emergency workers. You have
a sheet of paper, some photos and felt-tip pens on the desks. You must write
what you had done before the disaster, you did during and after it. You have 5
minutes. Then you will present your posters and tell us about your work.
P:
We are emergency workers; we worked in a flood area. Before the disaster
we had informed people about the dangerous situation by the radio, TV that they
should leave their houses. We had taken away people to safe places, children to
the camps. We brought food and water to people who hadn’t left their homes.
After the flood we cleaned streets, repaired houses, built new houses because a
lot of them were damaged.
P:
We are emergency workers; we worked in an earthquake area. Before the
disaster we had informed people what they should do if the earthquake starts. During
the earthquake we took away people to safe places, evacuated them, and gave
them water, food and warm clothes. Doctors treated injured people. We looked
for people who were under the fragments of destroyed houses. After the
earthquake we cleaned the streets, repaired houses which can be repaired,
rebuilt the new ones.
P:
We are emergency workers from a hurricane area. Before the disaster we
had tried to inform all people that the hurricane would come. During the
hurricane we helped people to get to their homes. We took away people who
couldn’t evacuate to safer places. We gave them food and drinks, warm clothes.
Doctors helped people who were hurt. We looked for people who were under
destroyed houses. After the disaster we helped people to find their lost
relatives. We cleaned the town and built new houses for homeless people.
10
Sum up the lesson.
-Thank
you for your projects. You know that there is an Emergency Ministry in our country.
The emergency workers of our country are known all over the world. They help
people in terrible disasters, they deliver humanitarian aid, they carry out
medical evacuations. People all over the world are grateful them. We hope that
all these natural disasters will miss us. But we must be ready for these
dangerous situations, we must know what to do and how help people in a disaster
area.
-
At home you will read and translate the text at page 29 about six boys who
found themselves on an island.
Give
marks to students.
-The
lesson is over, thank you for your work.
