     Answer:

7-10: You do not worry about the environment at all! You think pollution is someone else’s problem, not yours. You think recycling and saving resources are too time-consuming.

11-17: You care about the environment and you have some good habits, which help save it. However, there are probably a few other things you could do.

18-21: You definitely care about the environment. You think about it when you make everyday decisions. If more people in the world were as good as you are, the planet wood have fewer problems.

T: Look through the following passages and say which of the facts impressed you the most. Explain your choice.

     Most Polluted City

Mexico City, Mexico, has levels of sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and other poisonous gases more than double those deemed acceptable by the World Health Organisation.

     Worst Nuclear Reactor Disaster

The world’s worst ever nuclear reactor disaster took place at the nuclear power station in Chernobyl (in the former USSR, now Ukraine) in April of 1986. An area of more than 10,900 sq miles was contaminated and about 1.7 million people received a various amount of radiation.

It is the world’s largest independent conservation organization. Registered as a charity on 11 September 1961, it has around 5 million supporters in 100 countries. The aim of the WWF is to protect nature and conserve biological diversity.

   III. Main Part

   1. PRACTISING VOCABULARY

   1. T: Environmental protection is a burning problem nowadays. The development of industry has had a bad influence on the world’s nature. We must do our best to protect our environment. To be able to do it we must realize a number of environmental problems.

T: Split up into two teams. Do the word search: cross out worlds referring to the topic, read remaining letters in sequence and you will find out a hidden expression.

T: Listen to the text and find more facts about urban problems.

While-listening

T: Pay attention to the following words a demographer, ecological imbalance and be ready to give their definitions.

URBAN PROBLEMS

The urban problem is one of the most complex in today’s world. One of every six people lives in a city with a population of more then one million. There is a tendency towards rise of the urban population. Today there are many big cities with the population ranging from 5 to 10 million and above. By the year 2010, demographers expect that Mexico City will have  population of 30 million, Calcutta, some 20 million, Bombay, and Jakarta, from 15 to 20 million. There are more than 20 cities in the CIS states with the population of over one million.

The main urban problems are water supply, public transport, housing construction, air pollution, noise etc. The problems of ecological imbalance in big cities are very urgent and they can call a crisis if due measures are not taken.

Post-listening

T: Complete the table.

By the year 2010 demographers expect:

City

Population

Mexico City

Calcutta

Bombay

Jakarta

IV. SUMMING-UP

T: Today you have learnt a lot of information about environmental problems and we have spoken about the ways of solving them. You worked well and your marks are …
