Урок английского
языка проводился в 6 классе по теме «The USA».

- We live in a world of a mass media, so we already know some information about
the USA and its people, don`t we?
To expand borders of our
knowledge, I will ask you some questions about America, and you should raise
your hand, if you know the answer.
( Учитель задает
вопросы по теме, ученики отвечают на них. Если ни один из учеников не знает
ответа на вопрос, учитель сам отвечает на него, ученики делают записи в тетрадях.
На следующем уроке учитель еще раз задает данные вопросы. )
1.
What do you remember about the discoverer of America?
(Where was he born? Where did he live? What country was he looking for in 1492 when he
discovered the new continent?)
2.
What do you know about the first English settlements in
America and the first English colonists? (When and why did England become
interested in America? When did the "Mayflower" sail to America? What
did they call the part of America where they set up their first colony? What
kind of life did they lead?)
3.
Why did people in America fight for their independence
from England?
4.
What big US cities do you know?

карты, рассказывает о местоположении Америки, климате, особенностях ландшафта, ресурсах,
достопримечательностях). Показ достопримечательностей Америки с помощью
мультимедийной доски.
T
- Now let`s look at the map of the USA.
There are fifty states in
the United States of America. Two of these states, Alaska and Hawaii, are not
connected to the other states. The US is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the
west, by the Atlantic Ocean in the east, by the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico
in the south. In the north are Great Lakes.
The US is a large country
with many natural wonders. It goes from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the
islands of Hawaii in the Pacific, and from cold, snowy northern Alaska to sunny
Florida in the southeast. The US has almost
every kind of weather. Also, it has many kinds of land —
rocky
coasts, dry empty deserts, big rivers, wide plains and grasslands, lakes of all
sizes, high mountains, forests, sunny beaches, lands of endless winter.
There are a lot of parks,
forests and wildlands where you can enjoy the beauty and power of wild America.
The Grand Canyon, Yosemite Valley, and Yellowstone are among the most famous.
Many rivers cross the
United States. But the greatest is the mighty Mississippi. It begins quietly in
the north of the country and ends in the Gulf of Mexico, nearly four thousand
miles1 (6400 km) away. Among other big
rivers are the Colorado and the Missouri. The Colorado River rises in the Rocky
Mountains or the Rockies that stretch from Alaska down almost to the south of
the country. Another big mountain chain Is
the Appalachians in the east also running from north to south.
4.3 Презентация
регионов.
In a country that covers
over 9
million
square kilometers, it is not surprising to learn that regions that are
separated by large distances will be different. These regions are formed by
history and geography. Within several regions, language is used differently and
there are strong dialects. There are also differences in outlook and attitude
based on geography. The fifty states that make up the United States can be
divided into six regions.
The Northeast
(Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island)
The first or settlers
came to the Northeast region in the 17th century. These were mostly English
Protestants, looking for freedom to practice their religion and political
reform. They gave the region its political format -
town
meetings in which citizens gathered to discuss issues of the day.
The winters are cold and
harsh, and the land is not very flat or fertile, this region is not well suited
for farming (the chief product of the land was stones). Eventually
manufacturing and trade became the most important contributors to the regional
economy. This region is well known for its culture (with excellent theaters and
museums) as well as its educational system (with some of the most highly rated
and respect universities in the country (Harvard). This region is also known
for its mix of ethnic groups, including Irish, Italian, and many eastern
Europeans. In their business dealings, New Englanders gained a reputation for
hard work, shrewdness, thrift, and ingenuity.
The Mid-Aiiantic(New
York, New jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington, DC, and Maryland)
In the l9th century the
Mid-Atlantic states provided the muscle. The region's largest states, New York
and Pennsylvania, became centers of heavy industry (iron, glass, and steel).
Into this area of industry, came millions of Europeans who made of it what
became known as the "melting pot." As heavy industry spread
throughout the region, rivers such as the Hudson and Delaware were transformed
into vital shipping lanes. Cities on waterways — New
York on the Hudson, Philadelphia on the Delaware, Baltimore on Chesapeake Bay -
grew
dramatically. New York is still the nation's largest city, and its cultural
center. But even today, the visitor who expects only factories and crowded
cities is surprised. In the Mid-Atlantic, there are more wooded hills than
factory chimneys, more fields than concrete roads, and more farmhouses than
office buildings.
The South
(Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of
Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma)
The American Civil War (1861-65)
devastated
the Old South socially and economically. Slavery was the issue that divided
North and South. To northerners, it was immoral; to southerners, it was
integral to their way of life and their plantation system of agriculture. The
scars left by the war took decades to heal. The abolition of slavery failed to
provide African Americans with political or economic equality; and it took a
long, concerted effort to end segregation.
The region however still
has many landscapes to delight the human sense of poetry and wonder. The region
is blessed with plentiful rainfall and a mild climate. Crops grow easily in its
soil and can be grown without frost for at least six months of the year. But
today farming has become less prominent, and manufacturing and tourism have
contributed greatly to the economy. Southerners are probably the most
distinctive of all American regional groups, with more relaxed attitudes and
traditional ways than their neighbors to the north. They are known for their
hospitality.
The Midwest
(Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of
Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska and eastern Colorado)
The Midwest is the
largest of the regions, with the most variation in weather. However, the land
is almost entirely flat, and also very fertile, making it ideal for farming.
The region is known as the nation's "breadbasket" because of its
production of oats, wheat, and corn. The first immigrants were Americans from
the east coast, as well as Europeans from Sweden, Norway, and Germany.
Farms are normally
located separate from each other, close to the fields, and often beyond the
sight of its neighbors. The village or town is principally a place where the
farm family travels to buy supplies, to attend church and to go for
entertainment or political, social or business meetings.
Midwesterners are known
for being honest, straightforward people of traditional values. The area is not
densely populated. The largest city is Chicago, known for its port, and for
being a connection between the eastern and western United States.
The Southwest
(western Texas, parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada)
This region has had the
least influence by European immigrants. Much of its culture has been defined by
native Americaт (also known as American
Indians) and by the Spanish. The land is generally flat and dry, and the
weather is very hot. The region has many deserts. The nation's greatest natural
wonder, the Grand Canyon, is located in this region. Also located here Las Vegas,
one of the world's premier gambling centers.
Parts of the Southwest
once belonged to Mexico. The United States obtained this land following the
Mexican-American War of 1846-48.
The West
(western Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, California, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon,
Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii)
The first settlers in the
West were the Spanish who established Catholic missions along the coast. This
region has probably the most variation in landscape and climate. This region
contains much undeveloped land which is enjoyed by the locals for recreation
(fishing, camping, hiking, boating, grazing, lumbering, and mining). The west
has the most varied mixture of immigrants of all the other regions. In some
areas, Mexican and Asian influences are dominant over European influences.
Now the second largest
city in the nation, Los Angeles is best known as the home of the Hollywood film
industry. Western cities are known for their tolerance and a very strong
"live-and-let-live" attitude.
Westerners are known as
the least traditional of Americans, and the most tolerant of change and
differences. California is the nation's most populous state, and is famous for
its movie and high-technology industries.
