Сложноподчиненные условные предложения состоят из двух частей: главного предложения и придаточного предложения условия.

Придаточное предложение выражает условие совершения действия, главное — следствие, вытекающее из этого условия. Придаточные предложения условия обычно соединяются с главным предложением союзом if.

В английском языке можно выделить 4 основных типа условных предложений.


The zero conditional talks about things that are always true: If you have children, you worry about them all the time.

In the zero conditional both verbs are in the Present Simple: If children stay indoors all the time, they become unfit.

If and when have the same meaning in the zero conditional: If/When I’m worried, I don’t sleep very well.


Условные предложения I типа выражают реальные осуществимые условия, обычно относящиеся к настоящему или будущему времени.

If I have time, I shall go to the concert tomorrow.

The first conditional talks about the result of a possible event or situation in the future.

The if clause talks about things that are possible, but not certain: If I start teaching again, I’ll be exhausted after a year (maybe I will start teaching again). The main clause says what we think the result will be in this situation (I’m sure I will be exhausted after a year).

We make the first conditional with: if + Present Simple, will/won’t + infinitive.

The if clause can be first or second in the sentence: I’ll be exhausted after a year if I start teaching again. We often use might in the main clause to mean ‘will perhaps’: But you might have to wait until next year if you don’t apply soon.

We can use unless to mean ‘if not’ in the first conditional: Unless I do it now, I’ll be too old. =


выражают маловеро­ятные и нереальные условия, относящиеся к настоящему или будущему времени.

If I had time now, I should go to the concert, but I'm busy.

В условных предложениях II типа в придаточном пред­ложении употребляется Past Indefinite, а в главном пред­ложении — сочетание should (would) с первой основной формой смыслового глагола.

If he knew where we lived, he would send us a telegram.


Глагол to be в придаточном предложении употребляется в форме were во всех лицах единственного и множественного числа. If I were you, I should go to the doctor at once.


выражают условия, не реализованные в прошлом и, следовательно, совершенно невыполнимые.

If I had had time yesterday, I should have gone to the concert, but I was busy.

В условных предложениях III типа в придаточном пред­ложении употребляется Past Perfect, а в главном предло­жении — сочетание should (would) have с третьей ос­новной формой смыслового глагола.

If he had seen you yesterday, he would have told you about the meeting.

If it hadn't rained last Sunday, we should have gone to the country.

  8. If these shoes were not too big for me, I (to buy) them. I should buy.

  9. If you (to ring) me up, I shall tell you a secret. You ring.

  10. If you (to be) a poet, you would write beautiful poetry. You were

  11. If he did not read so much, he (not to know) English literature so well. He would not know.

  12. If he (to come) to our house yesterday, he would have met his friend. He had come.

  13. If he (not to pass) his exam, he will not get a scholarship. He does not pass.

Be careful when you use the verbs in different tenses.
