Reading activity

THE STORY OF MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s day is a holiday honouring mothers. It is celebrated in many places of the world. Mothers receive greetings, flowers and gifts on this day.

The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations trace back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honour of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600s, England celebrated a day called”Mothering Sunday”. “Mothering Sunday” honoured the mothers of England and was celebrated on the 4-th Sunday of Lent.

It was a real holiday for many poor people, because the most of the England’s poor worked as servants for the wealthy. Most jobs were located far from their native homes; the servants lived at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants had the day off and they could return home and spend the day with their family and their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often cooked on this day.

SLIDE

Later, when Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honour the “Mother Church”. People honoured the church and believed that the church protected their life from harm. From that time people began honouring their mothers as well as the church.

T: let’s remember the plot of this story.

Speaking activity:

  • Where did Mother’s day celebrations trace back?

  • Whom did the ancient Greeks honour on this day?

  • When is Mothering Sunday celebrated in England?

  • When did this holiday start?

  • What cake was cooked on this day?

  • Why Mothering Sunday was a real holiday for many poor people?

  • What impact had Christianity on this holiday?

  • Why did church have such a great impact on people?

  • What did people honour during “Mother church” holiday?

T. Now listen and translate some quotations of famous people which they said about their mothers.

SLIDES

  1. Mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them. (Victor Hugo)

  2. God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers. (Jewish proverb)

  3. The heart of the mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. (Honore de Balzac)

  4. Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children. (William Thackeray)

Writing activity

Write down one of these quotation which you liked most of all. Learn it by heart at home. ( Control questions: What have you written?)

T: Mother’s day is celebrated not only in England. Now I will retell you about Mother’s Day celebrations in the USA.

PRESENTATION

In the United States Mother’s day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace.

SLIDE

It was the time of the American Civil War. In 1870 Julia wrote Mother’s Day Proclamation and called all mothers for peace against war.

SLIDE

But the first Mother’s Day was celebrated on May 1908 in West Virginia. From there the custom started spreading to 45 states. In 1914 the holiday was declared officially. Now it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

SLIDE

Listen to the words of American President Abraham Lincoln.

P. I am Abraham Lincoln, the 16-th President of America.

All that I am or hope to I be owe to my angel mother. I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.

Всем, кто я есть и надеюсь стать, я обязан моей маме, моему ангелу. Я помню молитвы моей матери, они всегда были со мной. Они всегда звучали во мне всю мою жизнь.

T. American people honour their mothers very much. Julia Ward Howe came into American history. Here you can see the post stamp dedicated to her.

SLIDE

And here it is her grave with unusual sign MOTHER.

SLIDE

Now Mother’s Day is celebrated practically in all countries of the world: in Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, England, Belgium, even African countries.

In Russia, the Mother's Day holiday was established in 1998 by law initiated by "Committee on Women, Family and Youth" of the State Duma. Since 1998, Mother's Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of November.

SLIDE

Teacher: Mother is the dearest person to every child. That’s why some of our pupils have made presentations about their mothers. Your classmates will retell about their mothers and read some poems to them.

PRESENTATION ABOUT MOTHERS (students’ reports)

  1. I want to tell you about my mum. She is kind-hearted and easy-going person. She is always ready to help or to give some good advice. As for me she is the best mother one can think of.

Thank you, God, for my mother –

For the times she reads to me,

For the way she helps me see

How things are made and done,

And for all the jolly fun

We have with each other -

I and my mother.

  1. This is my mother. She is my best friend. I share my secrets with her. She bakes delicious cakes for me and my brother. My mother loves us very much. And I want my mother to know that I love her.

Mummy, I love you

For all that you do.

I’ll kiss you and hug you

Cause you love me, too.

You feed me and need me

You teach me to play.

So smile ‘cause I love you

On this Mother’s Day.

  1. My mother is best for me. She always helps me. I love my mother because she is very caring and kind.

Mother’s Day is a nice day

To honour you in a special way.

I thank you for all your love.

For all that you do and say.

  1. This is my mother. She is an educator. She is a person who has a heart of gold. My mother loves children, and they love her.

My mother is the dearest person in the world for me.

Mummy, I love you first of all,

Then thanks for all you do.

It means you mean a lot to me,

And that I honour you.

Physical training minute

SPEAKING ACTIVITY

T. Mother is the nearest being for a child. How can we help her in everyday activities?

Slide

- How can you help your mother? (To make my own bed, to pick up my clothes, to clean my room, to go shopping and help my mother to prepare meals)

Teacher: Let‘s remember the poem about mothers that you have learned recently.

  1. Help your mother to lay the table

With a knife, and fork, and spoon.

Help your mother to lay the table

Every afternoon.

Help your mother to clear the table

Take the knife, and fork, and spoon.

Help your mother to clear the table

Morning, night and noon.

2. A Mother’s love is something

That no one can explain.

It’s made of deep devotion

And of sacrifice and pain.

It is endless and unselfish

And enduring come what may.

For nothing can destroy it

Or take that love away.

- What can make your mother happy? (My mother is happy when I get good marks; when I help her with household chores)

- What can you do special for your mother on the 8th of March? (To do my own gift for mother, to write a handmade greeting card, to make paintings or photos of the whole family, to write your own poem for mother)

Slides about handmade gifts

Teacher: Now we can listen to the song of English children that they sing on Mother’s Day. You can sing with them,

CLIP “Mother’s song”

WRITING ACTIVITY

Teacher: Look at the screen. You see the example for writing the ACROSTIC. Let’s try. Please, use the words and phrases from our lesson. Remember expressions from the text and quotations, what you keep in your mind and heart to tell about your mother.

Remember: every line must contain the word beginning with the first letter.

EXAMPLE

M mother is the dearest for me

O I don’t want my mother be old

T I don’t want to see tears in her eyes

H Her heart is of purest gold

E Her eyes are the kindest in the world

R She is always right.

Put the first letters together and you will get MOTHER.

Teacher: I hope you will respect and love your mothers all your life and honour them for sacrifice, devotion, endless love.

Let’s always remember and celebrate such a beautiful holiday as Mother’s Day.

I would like to remind you you words of the famous Russian writer M. Gorky.

Flowers don’t bloom without sun, there is no happiness without love, there is no love without a woman, there is neither poet nor hero without Mother.

And the next one.

Only mothers can think of the future – because they give birth to it in their children.

Teacher: We finish our lesson with the famous song “May there always be sunshine”.
