1. Look at the photo and answer my questions.

• What does this photo show?

• Where does the action take place?

• What time of the year is it? Why do you think so?

• Is it possible to say what we are going to talk about judging by this photo? Why?/ Why not?

• Would it be easier for you to define the topic if you knew the title of the text?

• So, the title of the text we are going to read and discuss is «Short on speed». Are you ready to make any guess concerning the problem or maybe both the title and the photo do not imply any problem at all? Justify your opinion.

6. Could you give a detailed description of weather conditions the ATR-42 had to encounter en route and while landing? To describe the full picture use the words from the box (proper chronological order is given to help you).

8. Опасные метеорологические условия включали в себя такие природные явления как лёгкий переохлаждённый дождь, переходящий в ледяной дождь и переохлаждённую морось, предполагающую наличие переохлаждённых больших капель воды и сплошной облачности.

9. После завершения расследования эксперты пришли к выводу, что эксплуатация воздушных судов в условиях известных переохлаждённых осадков должна быть запрещена, если только авиа производитель не продемонстрирует, что эксплуатация конкретной модели самолёта в подобных условиях абсолютно безопасна.

8. Pair work: read the third and the fourth paragraphs of the text and make a report to your partner ( your partner will ask you some questions for clarification, so be ready to answer them).

Ask your partner:

• what his/her paragraph is about

• what the captain confirmed while conducting the descent and approach checklists

• if the captain read the icing speed correctly

• what the reason of icing speed confusion was

• if correct airspeed for landing in icing conditions exceeded 106 kt

• if that error was inconsequential and why

8. Pair work: read the third and the fourth paragraphs of the text and make a report to your partner ( your partner will ask you some questions for clarification, so be ready to answer them).

The fourth paragraph «We have no flaps»

Ask your partner:

• what his/her paragraph is about

• what the first officer called for when the airplane was nearing the ILS outer marker

• what was amiss

• if he/she can describe flap position on both wings

• how the flap asymmetry was compensated

• why crew’s adherence to standard operating procedures was deteriorated

• if the crew recognized the nature of the problem

• what the captain decided to undertake

• if the captain’s decision was right under those circumstances
