I.
The beginning of the lesson. Greeting. Warming up.
Good
morning, children. Glad to see you. Today we are going to speak about family
matters, family relations and family problems. We’ll start our lesson with one
of our games. All of you have got families, big or small. You’ve got parents,
grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins. Imagine, you are
going to give one of your family members a present. Who would you like to give
your present to? What kind of present will it be? Why? Look at each other and
present
each
other (as if your family member) with something unusual. Comment on your
choice.
II.
We’ll start with a quotation belonging to Jane Howard;
Call
it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you
call it, whoever you are, you need one.
Comment
on it, please. Say whether you agree with this phrase or not. Why?
III.
Speaking. Answer my
questions, please.
1.
Is it important to have good family relationships? Why?
2.
Can you say that you are sincere with your parents?
3.
Do you trust all your problems and secrets to your parents?
4.
Do you prefer to talk sincerely to your parents or to your friends?
5.
What influences your relationships with your parents?
6.
Would you like to change anything in your family relationships? What and why?
III. Study. All of you have read William
Shakespeare’s tragedy “King Lear”. Now speaking about it can you say which of
his three daughters was really sincere, when answering their father’s question
? What
question was it, by the way?
1. We are going to read King Lear’s
monologue in Act 1, Scene 1.

2. Work in pairs. When reading the
episode, think of the following questions:
a) What is King Lear going to do?
b)
Why do you think King Lear wants to divide his kingdom?
c)
How is he going to divide his kingdom?
d)
What kind of man is he at the beginning of the play?
e)
Is he sure of great love of his daughters towards him?
3. Read the extracts with the words of
Goneril and Regan. Say, if you believe them or not. Why?
4. Find in the text,
please, Cordelia’s words about her feelings and thoughts while her sisters are trying
to prove their love to their father and convince their father in their great
love to him.
5. What happens after the conversation of Cordelia
and King Lear?
Cordelia:
Good My Lord,
You have begot me, bred me, loved me.
I return those duties back as are right fit,
Obey you, love you, and most honour you.
Why have my sisters husbands, if they say
They love you all? Happily when I shall wed,
That Lord whose hand must take my plight, shall carry
Half my love with him, half my care and duty,
Sure I shall never marry like my sisters
To love my father all.
Lear: But goes thy
heart with this?
Cordelia:
Ay my good Lord.
Lear: So young and so
untender?
Cordelia:
So young , my Lord, and true.
Lear: Let it be so, thy
truth be thy dower.
6. Children, do you think this family
conflict is the only problem shown in the tragedy by Shakespeare?
What important moral and psychological changes do we see in King Lear’s
character? As soon as he deprives himself of the Crown and of his property,
his fate is sealed. From the first man in the society, who is feared and obeyed
by everybody, he turns into a poor and despised old man. Why does it happen?
What moral evolution does he go through under his hard trials? Can we say that
when Lear ceases to be king he becomes human?
7. And one more question to discuss.
Does your attitude towards King Lear change while reading the tragedy? How?
Why do you fell irritation with him, the tyrant-king, at the beginning of the
tragedy and gradually begin to pity Lear at the end of it?
We are going to read two fragments from the tragedy
about King Lear’s suffering in the heath during the storm and then meeting
Cordelia in the French camp.

(Lear: Blow winds and crack your cheeks; rage, blow…)
http://www.literaturepage.com/read/shakespeare_kinglear-84.html
(Lear: Pray do not mock me…)
Who remains faithful to King Lear? What kind of
people are they? Is it important to have loyal friends and especially
relations?
8. Children, I’ve got one more quotation
to read. Will you, please, do it? Here it is.
“Having a place to go – is a home.
Having someone to love – is a family.
Having both – is a blessing”
Do you agree with Donna Hedges? Comment on the
phrase.
IV.
Conclusion.
You
see, my friends, there are few people without kith or kin. Most of us have
forefathers and descendants, close and distant relatives. That’s why it’s of
great importance how we treat all our dearest and nearest and how we are
treated by them. You are old enough to realize that adults may make mistakes,
they are not all the same saints. The so-called generation gap should not
necessarily spoil your relationships with your parents. Can you think of some
rules for yourselves to improve or keep your relationships good? For example, be
prepared to meet your parents’ needs, render any possible help to them, try and
make the atmosphere in the house cheerful and friendly, be interested in your
parents; problems, etc. Can you offer anything else?
V.
Thank you for the lesson. I wish you every success in
your life and studies.
