- Good morning, boys and girls! How are you? Do you like the weather today?

Today we are going to finish working with modal verbs. We’ll see how they are used in real life.

But first let’s warm up and have our phonetic drill. Look at the blackboard. Repeat after me:

The thirty-three thieves thought that they thrilled the throne throughout Thursday.

And now some of you will read the riddle alone.

Good! Well done!!!

The next riddle for today. Repeat after me:

William always wears a very warm woolen vest in winter.

Now is your turn to read it, please.

Not bad. Thank you. Practice reading these riddles at home and your pronunciation will be rather good.

1.As I have already said, modal verbs are widely used in real life.

Last time we began to investigate the murder.

Lord Moneybags was found killed in his drawing-room. When detective North tries to find the murderer, he makes suppositions. Here modal verbs are used in the meaning of supposition. Your homework was to fill in the blanks into the story and find the murderer. Let’s check your homework.

( приложение1)

Good. We have found the murderer and seen how modal verbs may help us in it.

2.But also the English people used modal verbs in proverbs. There are many examples of such proverbs. Of course, nearly all English proverbs have their Russian equivalents. We’ll check how well you can use your knowledge of English to connect the English proverbs with their Russian equivalents.

( карточки, приложение 2)

Thank you! You’ve done it successfully. Now you also see that every nation has its own views on different things. Besides, at home you are to learn 3 proverbs by heart.

3.We continue our work. We all know that our life is regulated by many rules. We come across them everywhere. They are social, moral, etc. They give us instructions how to behave in different places and situations.

I’ll show you some signs and your task will be to explain what they mean using modal verbs.

Now tell me, please, what is the meaning of modal verbs here?

Right you are. Rules, commands, instructions,

etc.

4.You see that the use of modal verbs is really wide. We also come across them in poetry. Today I suggest your making your own poems. Look at the blackboard. There you see words. You are to make your own poems, using all these words.

Now, please, read your pieces of poetry.

Thank you! All the variants are interesting.

Let’s sum up what’ve done today. We’ve seen how modal verbs are used in every-day life.

I want to see how successful and interesting the lesson was.

You’ll write a sikwein poem. It consists of 5 lines:

the 1st line- the word LESSON

the 2nd line- two adjectives which characterize this word

the 3rd line- three verbs, which show the actions of the main word

the 4th line- a short sentence, which shows your attitude towards the lesson

the 5th line- a noun, which shows your feelings.

Now read, please, your poems.

Thank you for your opinions about the lesson. I’m satisfied with your work. The lesson is over. Good-bye!
