you choose the hats, and let us start our discussion.
a) Good morning, everybody. I am glad to see you again. How are
you? Today we will speak about the American Civil War. We are going to discuss
it using six thinking hats.
b) Do you remember this interesting method?
White Hat. Discuss the facts and other objective information about
the problem.
Red Hat. Share feelings and emotions about the issue.
Black Hat. Present negative aspects, or worst case scenarios,
regarding the situation.
Yellow Hat. Consider positives, or advantages, of the situation.
Green Hat. Consider creative ideas that come from looking at the
problem in a new way.
Blue Hat. Sum up all that is learned.

Pupil 1: I would like to put on a white hat.
-We know that by 1861 there were already thirty-four states in the
Union. All the states were different from each other and developed in different
ways. The Northern states built factories and plants, and they had a bigger
population. The Southern states had huge cotton fields, where black slaves
worked. There were about three and a half million slaves in the Southern
states.
When the time for the next election came, it was clear that the
most important question would be slavery. There were four candidates, but a
Northerner called Abraham Lincoln won the election. He was a member of the new
anti-slavery Republican Party. In February 1861, starting with South Carolina,
eleven states would eventually leave the United States and form a new country
called the Confederate States of America, but Abraham Lincoln wouldn’t let them
split up the country. And so the Civil War began.
There were many battles such as First Battle of Bull Run, The
Capture of Fort Donelson, The Battle of the Monitor and Merrimac,
Battle of Shiloh, The Battle of New Orleans, Seven Days Battles,
Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg.
The Battle of Gettysburg took place on July 1-3, 1863 in and near
the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This battle was one of the most important
battles of the Civil War for the North.
Pupil 2. Let me put on the black one.
-As you know, although it was written in the Declaration of
Independence that all men and women are created equal, I don’t think that these
words were true for the slaves. The first slaves in the American colonies
arrived on a Dutch ship in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Over the next 200
years, around 600,000 more slaves were brought to the American colonies, most
of them to work the tobacco and cotton fields. They lived in terrible
conditions and had to work day and night. Even some Southerners understood that
slavery was unhuman, but without it, they were afraid their whole way of life
would be destroyed.
Pupil 3. I will take the yellow hat.

I
am glad that we have learned about the American Civil War. We should consider
that the Northerners were strongly against slavery; a lot of them helped slaves
escape from their owners. They also tried to pass new laws to abolish slavery.
This idea became more and more popular, which didn’t suit many people in the
South.
The North was actually more powerful than the South; they had more
men, and their factories produced weapons and supplied the Northern army with
everything they needed. However, the confederacy had one big advantage: they
didn’t have to invade the North, they just had to protect their own land and
homes. At that time, a lot of people thought it would be possible.
Pupil 4. I prefer putting on the green hat.
What is good about the American Civil War? As a result of the war,
slavery was abolished and the United States was one country again. If I had
reversed history, I would have abolished the slavery without any war, where
thousands and thousands of people died.
The rebuilding of the South after the Civil War was called the
Reconstruction. The Reconstruction lasted from 1865 to 1877. The purpose of the
Reconstruction was to help the South become a part of the Union again.
The Union did a lot to help the South during the Reconstruction.
They rebuilt roads, got farms running again, and built schools for poor and
black children. Eventually, the economy in the South began to recover.
Pupil 5. It’s my turn to share my feelings with you.
-According to Wikipedia, a civil war is a war between organized
groups within the same state or country. It is generally characterized by extreme
collective aggression, destruction, and usually high mortality.
I feel sorry for those killed young farmers and soldiers who had
not fathered any children yet. The Civil War is sometimes called "The
Boys' War" because so many young men fought as soldiers.
The Battle of Gettysburg was the deadliest battle of the Civil
War. There were around 46,000 casualties including nearly 8,000 deaths.
Teacher: Thank you for your discussion. Before we sum it up, let me
read the extract of “The Gettysburg Address”. After the battle, the American
President, Abraham Lincoln, came to Gettysburg to honor the memory of those who
had died there. He made a speech there, which later became famous as “The
Gettysburg Address”.
The Gettysburg Address was a short, but profound speech given by
President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863. It is considered today to be
one of the greatest speeches ever given. In that speech Lincoln told his
countrymen that it was for them to make sure “that these dead shall not have
died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom –
and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not
perish from the earth.”
I expect you to do ex.4 p.138. in writing. Complete the sentences,
please.

Pupil 6: I would continue by summarizing.
The American Civil war was the war between the Northern
states or the Union and the Southern
states or the Confederacy.
The Southern states had slaves.
The war started in 1861 and ended with the
victory of the Union.
One of the most important battles took place near Gettysburg.
The President at that time was Abraham Lincoln. He was
from the North.
As a result of the war, slavery was abolished.
