A ТОUR AROUND THE USA

10th form

ЗАДАЧИ УРОКА: провести контроль овладения учащимися языковой и речевой компетенцией в рамках изученной темы;

активизировать изученную лексику по теме;

организовать аудирование текста в предъявлении учащихся;

учить находить необходимую информацию в прослушанном и прочитанном текстах;

углубить знания учащихся о культуре и истории Соединенных Штатов;

развивать навыки неподготовленного высказывания по конкретным вопросам и навыки коммуникативного общения;

Образовательный аспект:

формировать навыки аудирования, чтения, диалогической и монологической речи .

Развивающий аспект:

развивать навыки и умения во всех видах речевой деятельности;

развивать слуховую и зрительную память, умение выделять главное, анализировать, логично и последовательно высказывать свои мысли на иностранном языке;

стимулировать познавательную мотивацию, усовершенствовать внимание, образное воображение.

Воспитательный аспект:

воспитывать любовь к знаниям;

воспитывать уважение к культурному наследию народа страны изучаемого языка, к традициям других народов;

формировать устойчивый интерес к предмету, готовность к сотрудничеству и взаимовыручке.

ОБОРУДОВАНИЕ: карта и флаг Соединенных Штатов, наглядный материал, тематические картинки, портреты известных американцев, компьютер.





ХОД УРОКА

I. ПОДГОТОВКА К ВОСПРИЯТИЮ ИНОЯЗЫЧНОЙ РЕЧИ.

1.Greeting ( приветствие).

T: Good morning, dear friends. I'm glad to see you happy and healthy today.

2. Aim ( сообщение теми и цели урока).

Т: From the very ancient times people wanted to explore other countries. They used primitive transport, they spent much time to get somewhere and they tried and tried and tried.

To whatever part of the world you went

By wheel or sail, or wing, or track,

You’ll have exciting things to tell

Now that you are safely back.

So, today we’re going to make a kind of journey to the past and present of one of the English-speaking countries. Listen to a short description of it and try to guess what country it is.

3. Warming-up (введение в иноязычную атмосферу).

This country lies in the middle of the North American continent. Its area is over 9 million square kilometres. The country consists of 50 states. Its national emblem is the bald eagle. The flag is called “The Stars and Stripes”. What country is this?

P1: I think it’s the United States because it consists of 50 states.

T: What else do you know about this country?

P2: The full name of the country is the United States of America.

P3: Washington is the capital of the USA.

P4: It’s a very large country.

P5: New York is the largest city.

P6: People of many nationalities live there.

P7: It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

P8: The country borders on Canada in the north and Mexico in the south.

1. Listening (аудирование текста “American State Symbols”):

a) Pre-Listening Activities. Этап подготовки к аудированию.

Т: What state symbols can you name? Does every state have them?

Т: Listen to the text “American State Symbols” to get as much information as you can.

P: THE AMERICAN FLAG has thirteen stripes (the country started from 13 states) and fifty stars because now there are 50 states in the USA. The flag is red, blue and white and often called “Stars and Stripes”. Americans love their flag very much and even have a special holiday for it – “Flag Day”, which is celebrated on June 14th. There are many rules for the flag: to display it only during the day, to fold on a special day and so on.

P: THE BALD EAGLE is the official national symbol. It carries an olive branch as a sign of peace and

arrows as a sign of strength.

P: THE STATUE OF LIBERTY is one of the most famous unofficial USA symbols. It is a statue of a woman holding up a torch in her right hand. The statue symbolizes liberty. France presented it to the USA in 1884.

T: There are many sights for tourists to see in the USA. One of them belongs to Seven Nature’s Wonders.Can you guess what I’m speaking about? Its the Grand Canyon.

b) While-Reading Activities. Этап чтения текста и выполнение заданий в процессе чтения.

T: Read the advertisement for the Grand Canyon, then use the information to write appropriate supporting sentences for the topic sentences 1 to 4. What phrases would you use to recommend it?

4. Game “Star Time” (игра “Звездный час”).

T: You’ve already read a lot about the USA, its cities, main holidays and sights. Let’s have an interesting game – “Star Time”. Let me introduce the participants, there are 8 of them, they are brilliant pupils, and I hope they will do their best to win. The game will have 5 rounds. I’ll explain the rules of each round.





  1. The first round.

T: After the question has been asked, you must raise one of your cards with the number. The time to give an answer is 10 seconds after each question.

4. Who abolished slavery in the USA?

b) The second round.

The rules are the same as in the first round. But after this round two participants, who have the least number of points, leave our competition.

Now six participants are left in the competition. You will get four tasks during this round, then 2 more persons will go out.

d) It’s a land of big fiords and perpendicular ice-walls shining in the sky.

TASK 4:

Now I’ll show you some pictures and you should name the famous sights of the USA that you see in them.

d) The fourth round.

So, 4 participants are left. Now each of you will get a card with an abbreviation. The task is to say what it means:

UNO – United Nations Organization

DC - District of Columbia

NYC - New York City

US - United States



e) The fifth round. Now there are only 2 participants. And you’ll have the last competition.

TASK 1:

You’ll see the portraits of famous people of the USA. Please name them, tell what they are famous for.

1. GEORGE WASHINGTON – the first president of the USA.

2. ABRAHAM LINCOLN – the 16th American president who abolished slavery.

3. JACK LONDON – a famous American writer.

4. CHARLIE CHAPLIN – a famous English /American film actor.

5. MICHAEL JACKSON – a famous pop singer.

6. NEIL ARMSTRONG – an American astronaut.

7. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER – a famous Hollywood film actor.

8. MADONNA – a famous pop singer.

TASK 2:

Now you will have a word duel. Look at this long word – acknowledgement – признание. You must make as many words as possible out of it: never mind what part of speech they are. You’ll have 3 minutes for it. Then you must read the words in turn one after another.

T: Dear friends, while they are working, let’s sing a very famous song “We shall overcome”.

T: Please read the words in turn one after another. The word must not be repeated. The last person to say the word is the winner.
